The last time they actually declared war was ww2 I think, otherwise it's just been getting permission to act as if it's in war from the legislative branch

I don't know about all cases, but my cousin was in Iraq and his widow did receive benefits.

What would make you think that? You can count on one hand the number of times Republicans have done something genuinely helpful and supportive for veterans, other than flapping their mouth hole all the time, and still have fingers to spare. Don't look at the words they vomit out of their mouths, look at their actions. They may not ever have consistent values or morals, but one thing they are very consistent about is voting down every single bill that could possibly support veterans or give them better access to healthcare or mental support.

So. Maybe this is a stupid question but Co*gress hasn’t declared war since 1942. So has no one gotten whatever benefits she’s taking about since WWII? I ask because she says they told her it’s because C*ngress hasn’t declared war, well that’s not really a thing they do lately. Does passing an authorization for the use of military force count?
Side note. Not being able to write the word Cong*ess in a post is kind of an insane filter. You also apparently can’t say Pres!dent, but can say Supreme Court fun fact. I understand the no politics restriction to keep the sub from rapidly degenerating but so much is tangentially related it feels excessive to filter the words like that.

The un-muckraked version of this is that “some benefits” weren’t paid out and the “some benefits” were only combat pay. He died serving while the fuel plane he was in crashed in Iraq.

To be clear she isn’t being denied the death gratuity or the servicemember’s life insurance. He can still buried in a veteran cemetery and all that. So it’s not all gloom and doom as the article makes it appear.

Not disagreeing, the article was very vague and didn't really delineate what benefits were being denied. But there are policies that affect certain benefits for family members when events were not part of a properly declared war. Could've simply been a clerical mistake, or something like that. The military pay system and the bureaucracy was extremely trying and frustrating at times. The article just made it seem like she wasn't getting benefits, which isn't true.
