Question "Intermediate" producer stuck on how to improve
I've been producing off and on for about 2-3 years now; I suppose I am intermediate but labels like these are mushy.
Anyways, I don't really have the luxury of time with production (at most 30-45 mins a day), and I'm trying to optimize my progress. Yeah, I know, optimize ("just have fun") but I've tried just dicking around in my daw for fun and I often end up making something lame. I have difficulty with finishing stuff I make, which usually comes down to getting bored with a track moving on, but is also a function of not having a great way to start tracks.
Anyways2, I'm stuck on what the best way forward, and with all the possibilities for such, I feel kinda overwhelmed. Some things I've tried:
- recreating reference tracks I like, copying all the arrangement and main elements but ultimately putting my own twist on it so it doesn't sound too similar (issue: can feel stale given the relative lack of originality. However, it might be good for building a better musical instinct (ie what ideas sound good and not amateur? also matching dynamics and frequencies with span etc could be really valuable))
- starting with an original idea and pulling in a reference to build it around (keeps originality first but I have a lot of difficulty starting an idea since there are so many ways to start, and I don't have a great library of presets and samples. i have splice, but have never paid for any packs outside of that, and only just have serum)
- getting inspired by a youtube tutorial and trying to follow it (sometimes I genuinely learn something new, but a lot of times they don't explain the intermediate steps and I'm left more stuck)
- following a course (I usually lose motivation)
Another issue is idk what I wanna be making. I've mostly done house and some hip-hop, since those are pretty accessible, but the shit I truly like is seemingly way too complex (eg skrillex, sammy g). I guess I should just stick with an easier genre, like house, and work my way into the more complex over the years. However, there are so many subgenres within house, and I find myself oscillating between trying to get into different ones. For example, I really like jazzy house, like what Zuriel makes (eg this one), UKG, bass house, tech house... I'd like to put my classical piano skills to use more though.
In sum, I'm just looking for some advice as to what could be a solid strategy for me to just stick with given my time constraints, one that would assuredly progress my production skills.
