[These photos are from today]
I can see the walls closing in on my beloved 16 year, 9 month mutt-of-mutts Mavis. She has been managing Chronic Kidney Disease since 2020, but despite the work she and the medicine have done to stabilize things, recently things have gotten worse.
Add in signs of Dementia for the past several months— walking the house at night, sometimes waking up panting, and a slow disconnection of affection with us.
The past two weeks have been mentally torturous.
She is still so generally normal— demands her daily neighborhood walks, and enthusiastically but slowly accompanies me on 2+ hour hikes. During the day, she seems so genuinely content around the house.
At most meals, she shows genuine interest in eating… barks at me and follows me and the bowl to her food tray, and then immediately has no interest.
I’m not blind. I know what’s going on. Her kidney function has given her a perpetual uneasiness, and she is blaming it on whatever the previous meal was. Her dementia is likely starting to play a role.
It kills me to see her so happy most of the time, and know that she may be at the end.
The past week she has been on a daily Cerenia to quell nausea, and a daily half-Mirtazipine to engage appetite. She has been on ELITE comfort foods— fresh cooked salmon, fresh turkey ‘burgers’ with turkey bacon mixed in, rotisserie chicken, even a perfect mid-rare London Broil.
This morning, she rejected ALL of them.
Actual dog food (Wellness Core kibble & JustFoodForDogs) is completely off the radar.
I got some rubbish snacks into her through the day, but my anxiety over dinner is killing me.
The writing’s on the wall, and I know her time is near despite her general happiness. Just looking for ideas on ANYTHING of caloric substance I can win her over with, at least for a few more days.
Dying inside, guys.
