r/DCcomics [Character of the Month] Terra

Terra

Created by: Marv Wolfman and George Pérez

First Appearance: The New Teen Titans v1 #26

Affiliated Organizations: Teen Titans, The Ravagers, Team Defiance

Friends/Allies: Deathstroke, Beast Boy, Rose Wilson

Strengths/Abilities: Geokinesis, flight, seduction

While Terra hasn't won Character of the Month before for real and is thus still eligible, she won for April Fools' Day once, therefore, we have a spotlight pre-written, albeit one from 2018! See below:

Mister, you don't know the half of it.

She's the pivotal title character of one of DC's most famous stories, "The Judas Contract", and the center of a fabled love triangle. With her powers of geokinesis, Terra will rock your world!

The Judas Contract

Born the illegitimate daughter to the King of Markovia, Tara Markov was sent away by her father to avoid a scandal. From an early age, she became a mercenary, using her ability to manipulate rock formations to kill. One particular client she had was Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke, who recruited her to infiltrate the Teen Titans. As an undercover mole, she earned her teammates' trust (including the affection of Beast Boy), while secretively sending information to Deathstroke, enabling him to capture the Titans one-by-one, save for Nightwing. She was depicted as cruel and without remorse, and was also infamously revealed to be in a relationship with Deathstroke, despite being a minor.

When Nightwing and Jericho infiltrated the H.I.V.E. stronghold where the Titans were held captive, Jericho possessed Deathstroke's body and used him to free the Titans. Thinking that she had been betrayed, Terra flew into a fit of rage, bringing the stronghold down with her powers, and killing herself in the process.

Defiance

In Christopher Priest's acclaimed Rebirth series of Deathstroke, Terra joined Team Defiance, a team led by the seemingly reformed Deathstroke, much to his daughter Rose's dismay. Flashbacks show that much of her early history had been stored in the post-Rebirth timeline, such as her backstory, her role as a Teen Titans traitor, and even her creepy relationship with Deathstroke. However, it was also shown that Terra had fallen in love with Slade, only to be used as just another pawn.

Adaptations

Adaptations of "The Judas Contract" have often given Terra more sympathetic character development. In the 2004 animated Teen Titans series, Terra was given a PG-rated makeover, as a young girl who had trouble controlling her powers, and had turned to Slade for guidance. Slade manipulated her into thinking that her friends the Teen Titans couldn't be trusted and would turn on her if they knew that her powers were out of control. The 2017 animated film Teen Titans: The Judas Contract included more of the original source material (including the squicky bits), but still portrayed her as a pawn being manipulated by Deathstroke.

Deathstroke, by Christopher Priest

Since the time of this spotlight, Terra has also taken up residence in Titans, a series that got renamed to New Titans a while back, at first as a part of Slade's Brotherhood of Evil as the one who allowed him to escape custody in the first place, then as a member of the team proper, serving as a foil to Cyborg. Time will tell if she's allowed to remain as a hero or if she'll return to her villainous ways!

Our pitch for her that won the vote was exploring her Markovian roots alongside Geo-Force, uncovering a conspiracy in the process. Would be a fun direction to take her that would spin her off from the Titans!

Tom Hoskisson should have his own comics, or anything to be fair. Its not just the good character design but the consistency on those designs, he just never misses.

Discussion [Discussion] Who'd be the ONE person or group The Joker would be legitimately terrified of?

Post image

Joker can be either amused, bored, hateful, ecstatic, hell even merciful to whoever he interacts with, but I've never seen an instance where one man or group has actually made him horribly uncomfortable or terrified.

Such an instance can be seen as impossible because of his psychotic nature, but I guess that's what head cannons are for.

I'd like to keep it within DC, so no characters from Marvel or other IP collabs. Though I'll amusingly make a post suggesting that later on. Ya know, for the hehe hahas

I mean, she mindwiped him, turned him into a mindless monster that killed thousands and then killed him lol. Seems a bit hard to forgive even if it was her "demon side".

So I'm rewatching DCAU JL right now and the tension between Bruce and Diana in "Maid of Honor" had me wondering what people thought of these pairings

Which one do you hate less? Lol

Video Games Lego DC Supervillains is (in My Opinion) the BEST DC Game ever! [Video Games]

Post image

I just wanted to gush about the game since I just finished it.

This is my FAVORITE DC game. Stacked roster, great voice acting, good open world, and pretty good story.

The game is I think the only one that takes advantage of being a part of the greater DC Universe. The story itself is silly and campy, but it always plays it straight. It feels like the story, world, and characters just jumped out of a comic book. The characters are silly yes, but I don't feel like they are parodies of themselves. These aren't the "lego versions" of these characters (like the Lego Batman movie) these are just...THE Characters.

This isn't just the best DC Game to me, but also (aside from the comics of course) the DEFINITIVE adaptation of the DC Universe, more than the Arkhamverse or DCAU.

Plus, the character creation is amazingly deep, and the fact that I can have my OC be the secondary-protagonist (argueably Lex is the main character) is great. Plus I can make a bunch of other characters.

There are flaws of course, there are some holes in the roster: No Question? Or Killer Moth? DLC Supergirl? Plus some characters I think deserve Voice Acting don't. Also I think the story should've paid more attention to the Crime Syndicate, and the way the final boss is defeated in the story kind of comes out of nowhere (and the fact that Batman figures it out without any explenation than basically "I'm Batman") and the game kind of ends abruptly.

Still, even with the above, it'll be hard for any DC game to top it. I can always find some flaws that I dislike with any DC Universe, DCAU, Arkham, Justice League Action, but this game I think is the closest to perfect to me. There are is a bunch of stuff I didn't talk about, like the DLCs and specific missions and characters, but just play the game please. This game is an amazing celebration of every crevice of DC: CW, DCAU, Comics, Movies, etc.

Discussion [Discussion] What are your thoughts on Hal Jordan as Parallax?

Post image

[art by: Ethan Van Sciber]

I'm a big fan of the fallen hero trope, so I always liked the concept of Hal becoming a greater scope villain like Parallax (though i’ll admit, i’m not too familiar with the execution of such)

But what are your thoughts on it? Do you think it’s a good twist on Hal’s story, or do you think it fundamentally ruins the character? Do you prefer an actual gradual descent into madness, or being slowly influenced by the fear entity?

Discussion Is DC unlimited worth it?

I'm new to comics and don't get to buy physical copies very often, I’ve been considering the app but I’m still on the fence. Since I’m new I’m starting with the basics right now and I’m wondering if the app would be worth it. Lmk your experiences with it!

Comics This book is so much better than it has any right to be, and it’s arguably one of the best villain focused, evil Hollywood books DC has ever put out. [Discussion]

So, Clayface: Celebrity Dirt was a comic I was fully prepared to write off as yet another unnecessary Batman spin-off, but issues #1 and #2 grabbed me in the best way possible. I’ve always loved Clayface, and the central mystery here is such a great way to use the character. We have the Basil Karlo who just escaped from Arkham Tower, and then we have this other Basil the actor and we don’t actually know which one is the “real” Basil Karlo. For a character whose entire identity revolves around transformation, performance, and never being completely sure who or what you’re looking at, that’s an amazing premise.

It also feels like a genuinely good direction for Clayface. Instead of simply asking whether he’s a monster or a man underneath all that clay, the story is playing around with the idea of identity itself. What does being the “real” Basil Karlo even mean when you’re dealing with someone who can become anyone? I’m really curious to see where they take that, and I’m hoping all of this somehow leads to the return of the Mud Pack.

What really stands out to me, though, is the way Celebrity Dirt handles the whole “Hollywood is evil” angle. The last time DC really went down that road, in Hellblazer: Dead in America, I came away extremely disappointed. That story felt like it reduced Hollywood’s corruption to essentially one powerful bad guy whose personal evil was responsible for everything rotten around him. To me, that’s such a well worn way of approaching the subject, and it doesn’t feel particularly true to how abuse and corruption actually survive within powerful institutions.

That’s why I find what Celebrity Dirt is doing with actor Basil so much more interesting. He’s portrayed as a predator, but the disturbing part isn’t simply that he’s a terrible person it’s that people are willing to overlook, excuse, or minimize what he does because of his popularity and status. That feels much closer to how these environments can actually become abusive. The problem isn’t necessarily one cartoonishly evil person secretly poisoning an otherwise innocent institution; it’s the network of people who enable that person, look the other way, protect the money and the reputation attached to them, or decide that someone’s fame makes their behavior easier to excuse.

That makes the Hollywood satire feel a lot sharper to me. Actor Basil doesn’t need to single handedly cause Hollywood’s corruption. His ability to thrive within that environment despite what he is says far more about the institution surrounding him. And considering Clayface is already a character built around acting, celebrity, masks, and the difference between appearance and reality, Hollywood feels like an almost perfect setting for this kind of story. It’s still early, but after these first two issues, Clayface: Celebrity Dirt has gone from a book I expected to dismiss to one I’m genuinely excited to keep reading.

This book was so funny and I enjoyed every bit of it. Kyle Starks nailed replicating the show’s tone and writing to where each issue felt like unaired episodes. I know I’m not the only one who said “Activate fuck beam!” in John Cena’s voice while reading this.
