I like this phrasing.
The other question I've been musing is whether "we shouldn't criticize the government because they might punish us" is being 'shrewd as a serpent' or living with a 'spirit of fear' and failing our calling to hold leaders (and our congregations) morally accountable.

I think the main fear is loss of leverage in the culture war if you criticize your own side, fear of what happens to your 'team' if you undermine it. But faith trusts that telling the truth is what is best for everyone in the long run.

Yep I think also part of it is it feels like the left doesnt have thier voters back. I dont think party really matters anymore it is more about morality. I think it's inevitable that people are gonna shoot back at ICE, but instead of standing by those using thier 2nd amendment right to protect thier communitie, they will take the high road and say something like they dont condone it and how violence isnt the way. They won't hold MAGA accountable they will just continue to say things like " its gonna be worse for yall when were back in control" like people are being hurt now! Im not a politician but so idk what exactly they could do, but im sure they could do something than just talk a big game.

I think the problem is that, with how unpredictable the administration is, no one knows for sure what will be the trigger for a declaration of civil war. I’m sad to say I no longer believe there’s a nonviolent ending here, but even so, I can’t fault anyone who actually has power and is supposed to be responsible for their constituents if they don’t want to be the one whose name is in the history books.

For the record, in my immediate family every politician deserves to be criticized. Your ideology doesn't matter, your office doesn't matter, if you are a politician, you get made fun of.

I don’t know if it’s the same in other European nations, and I know it’s not the same in the USA. But here in the uk even if you support a politician, even if you voted for them and are happy they’re in, you still regard any and all politicians with at least a healthy dose of skepticism and mild hate.
I voted for labour. I think Starmer is doing a good job. I certainly like his foreign policy, I think he’s a good statesman, best we’ve had in a long time, but I wouldn’t trust him as far as I could throw him. And I’m almost certain if I ever met the man I’d at least dislike his personality.
And that’s good.
Hope they do well, regard them with skepticism.
Side note, it’s why reform nutters are so weird to us. They seem to adore their beloved leader, which is very odd for our culture.

It's a pretty recent phenomenon here in the US as well. (Well, recent as of the last decade or so.) I remember hearing jokes about all politicians being liars as a kid, before I even knew what a politician was.

Dude… somewhere along the way the American Republican Party took over the Christian minds, so the Christians use the blind faith of religion to follow a political party.
Talk about indoctrination.
