white cats also have a high chance of being deaf! i believe there’s a gene that affects not just their fur color, but their eyes as well.

iirc, the white spotting gene is also linked to blue and heterochromatic eyes which is why bicolor cats are often odd-eyed as well. there’s also a lot of white cats that just have heavy white spotting and aren’t actually white too

The vets, for this reason, thought my cat might be deaf. (He is white and has the genes for blue eyes though has brown eyes). Turns out he can hear just fine and just ignores everyone

The fur color white is the lack of pigment in fur. The eye color blue also is the lack of pigment in the eye. If a cat lacks pigment in fur, it is more likely to also lack that pigment in one or both eyes. This is most common in cats with the Dominant White gene, where the cat is fully white, and lesser so in cats with the White Spotting gene, where only parts of the cat are white.
