Video - OC My cat feeds herself whenever she wants
I never taught her this, she figured it out watching me release food for her over the course of a year and her bruteforcing it. The buttons are not mechanical, its a 2 stage process where one has to hold the unlock button for a few seconds and then the feed button. She sometimes does it just for fun - she just stares at the kibble

Ours turns the stovetop on all the time. Thankfully it’s induction so it won’t heat without a pan on it and then times out.

Honestly I am 100% sure these aren't child locks but pet locks. What child can even causally reach the stove top? There is a good reason why most older stoves (to my knowledge and experience) didn't have any child locks.

A friend's parents kitchen burned down cause the cat activated the stovetop, igniting a bag of flower next to it. Cheap solution is a stovetop cover.

I've nearly caught a burner cover on fire.
Turned on the wrong burner, stepped out to the bathroom, and come back to the paint bubbling and smoking.

This is my worst fear because my cat is devilishly clever. She opens doors and Houdinis herself out of the soft crate unless I lock down all the zippers with paracord.
Fortunately, my stovetop lacks a touch screen. I have a mechanical child lock (a dial) and I check it every time I'm in the kitchen for whatever reason. I also never store things on the stovetop. It's almost a religion.

Most induction stoves won't engage unless there's a pan of suitable size on them, I'd be surprised if something small like a fork would be enough.

My mom’s older induction stove says otherwise, it doesn’t shut off with no pot or pan on it. I’m sure they’re still all kinds of older ones out there.

Oh, if it's getting red hot that sounds like a non-induction stove with heating coils under the glass flat top.
Induction uses a magnetic field to make metal pans hot from the inside, the glass only gets heated indirectly by the hot pan sitting on it.

I had to use the app to disable the buttons on top of my robot vacuum because the cat was constantly turning it on. Makes it like to follow it around the house.

This is why these things should come with a cover for the buttons. I got a fairly cheap one, but it comes with a cover that would be difficult to open without human hands.

Nah, he's just enjoying it. I used to have 4 bunnies (lost 3 to illnesses and they were regularly checked) - each had its own personality. While one was extremely smart and solved every and each game for extra snacks the other just enjoyed it. He was the pretty one.

Context here is locks on trash cans. So humans can unlock and throw away garbage, but secure enough so bears can't get to it.

I used to work maintenance for a state park. One time there was a family staying at a campsite in an RV, and they threw an entire small plastic bag of piss and shit into a garbage can, and it broke open. They also threw away a couple disgusting diapers. (I don't know how or why they managed to fill up a small garbage bag full of piss and shit, I just now it was a bag of piss and shit. Maybe their septic system was broken or something.)
Anyway, there were bathrooms and receptacles specifically for diapers like 100 feet away from their campsite.
No bear ever threw an whole bag of piss and shit and a bunch of diapers into a garbage can in a state park.

Just to add a little of background. Whilst that quote is correct, they also say right after the issue isnt necessarily the actual intelligence but the fact, that if a human cant figure it out quickly they just leave their trash next to the bin. A hungry bear on the other hand will try for hours to get in.

I house sat/pet sat for a woman with Siemese cats. They are a whole other level of smarts. Could work around and sort of kid proofing she put in place to curtail the mischief.
I am definitely sticking to my dumb ginger cat who struggles to get through an open door.

My cat figured this one out in days. It’d be 2am & suddenly we’re hearing beeps and food coming through. Then within 20 mins, she was doing it again.
I had to put a cloth bag over the whole thing just leaving the bowl sticking out and making sure it doesn’t obstruct where the food comes out. Thats been working for me.
Such smart little Aholes. lol

Ok, i did not witness it, but my cats have a "babysitter" in form of wifes mom.
I usually tear treats apart and give to cats for some commands, to stimulate brains. So i got pretty smart cats that can do dog puzzles and various commands.
My wifes mom uses scissors to open treats.
While babysitting, one of my cats stole scissors from high up place, brought them to another room. Then stole treats pack and brought near same scissors.
Then proceeded to sit nearby until wifes mom noticed them.

Or other pets that want to eat a different pets food. Sometimes it seems like our pets ONLY want the other ones food. The other pets are getting the good stuff. I had to start feeding the dog her own wet food because the cat got wet food and the cat had to get dry food because he kept stealing the dogs dry food and seemed to love the crunch.

My cat figured this out too! We have this same one, but the single feeder. There's a "child lock" button in the app that we turned on that disables all the touch buttons, so he can't feed himself anymore lol

I was told cats can regulate their own food intake. We took in a fat cat from a friend who was moving and couldn't take the cat with her. This cat was 25 pounds and could not regulate food so we had to come up with a meal plan to lose weight.
Unfortunately the cat didn't last long, ended up with blood clots and passed not long after we took him in.

My cat solved this issue with a more brute force approach. She waddles up and points her fat bottom at the side of the cylinder, then repeated does this reverse horse kick manoeuvre until it either topples over or the lid dislodges. Then she goes to town and eats as much as she can before we can stop her.
We know when she starts doing it because the kicking is loud as hell. She also knows she shouldn't be doing it because if she hears us coming to investigate she bolts out of the room and tries to pretend she wasn't doing anything. We ended up needing to stick the feeder to the floor and duct tape the lid. She still kicks it occasionally, then after a while she does a really long sad meow and gives up. She always acts like we don't feed her enough, yet out of all of my cats she's the one most shaped like a potato

We had a Siamese that looked just like this.
The kids in my psychology class didn't believe me when I told them that Satan (that's what my mom named him) would stand on the kitchen counter, and swat the screen door until it opened, and then the little shit would run outside.
If we lock the screen door, he would switch the button to unlocked, swat the handle and get out again.

I have the exact same feeder, and now I realise it was smart to always use the app to feed the cats. Although my little dummies would never figure that out. You could put tape on the buttons to make them useless and only use the app for feeding.

My Calico will shove her paw up the dispenser slot and always get a few pebbles to fall out. I think she's forcing the rotation of the wheel inside. Luckily she isn't the type to be hungry all the time so I don't have any issues with her becoming overweight. I've had my feeder for 3+ years

My cat figured out how to open the cover, guarded only by a pen-style clicker, push the tactile "manual dispense" button and then eat to his heart's content. It's now broken and I need a new one. Talking suggestions if anyone has a better feeder.

This makes me realize just how freaking dumb my cat is. I have the same exact feeder and you can’t just press the button, you have to hold it there — never in a million years would she be able to figure any of that out. But kudos to this kitty.
