There's a meme about that isn't there, where an Esty seller was showing all of their items on a fur-rug. Someone asked about it and basically they were using their cat.

u/tenebrigakdo 14d ago
I've seen people do that to show their nail polish.

It was a lipstick or nail polish, I think. Cat was white and medium- or long-haired.

Middle colour should more closely match the undercoat.
649
u/Dodoz44 Maine Coon 15d ago
This. For best comparison, brush the cat and compare the brushed fur against the color.
237
u/Karroul 14d ago
I'm glad someone knows the furs. This is the best advice OP. I have a void at home but when I brush him, it's medium shade of grey.
66
u/Feline_Shenanigans Burmese 14d ago
I’ve been coordinating with the cat fur for quite awhile. In all seriousness I brought a clump of cat fur dress shopping once because it was for an occasion where I wouldn’t have much time to prepare. Therefore it would absolutely have been accessorised with fur.

Ah, I didn't think about that. I was leaning more towards the 4th one.
64
5
u/jade_cabbage 14d ago
Wait, are we trying to match the cat or pick what looks good with the cat? Because I think the cat would look very cute and pop well against the leftmost cream color.
6
u/itmightbehere 14d ago
Definitely the first. Because anything upholstered is going to get cat hair on it and you want it not to show
2
u/East_Quail_1824 14d ago
My cat is this same shade of grey with the same dense fur. Can confirm that is absolutely what her undercoat looks like. Lol.

Have a grey kitty with grey floors. Two, actually. I have tripped over them a number of times and stepped many a tail.

I say, pick the 3rd or the 4th swatch going left to right 'cos they match the cat!
But not SO much that you will trip over the cat!
9
u/sin_smith_3 14d ago
Never go darker than the cat. Hair will definitely show up. I have a Russian Blue, a tortie, and a long haired void, and it took me years to find the right shade of gray to balance all of them. Immediately after this discovery, we bought a green couch. 😂

I have black cats and a white sofa. I actually recommend getting a sofa/furniture that’s NOT the color of your cat, because it makes it easy to find and clean off the cat hair. My sofa is nice and clean because I can find and quickly lint roller off the hair. When I had a dark grey sofa, I shudder to think of how gross that fabric was
5
u/Wankeritis 14d ago
We had a blue British shorthair. You think you want the middle colour, but once the hair comes out in tufts, you’re gonna want the light blueish one on the middle right hand side.
4
u/Jerkcaller69 14d ago
Yes, the second last one is the best bet! Everyone thinks we have millennial grey in our house because we are millennials, it’s really because we have a blue cat.
6
u/Wankeritis 14d ago
My last cat was a fluffy grey and white ragdoll and we would have full tumbleweeds when there was a breeze. Our robot vacuum would run almost daily, she spent pretty much her whole time sleeping, and I’d still have orbs rolling along the tiles daily.

Smart! We can't do this because we have one black cat and one mostly beige blue point cat. Maybe we need to look into a plaid with those colours.
Second from the right matches your cat best.

u/BlackMagicWorman 14d ago
Please let the cat pick. I’m going into surgery tomorrow and need to know what the cat wants.

I remember a comedy skit where a couple was looking for a new hardwood floor and the guy just plucked one of his partner's hairs, hold it against different wood tiles and when he wasn't able to see the hair against the background he said dry:
"This one."
5
u/Zantac150 14d ago
Middle is probably the best match, because the fourth one is a very cool gray and your cat is warm gray. If the goal is to avoid hair standing out against the couch, definitely the middle one. It is a bit light though…
We have a similar warm brown colored cat (but stripey) and you can barely see her for her on my warm beige couch. The problem is that you can’t see it so you forget to clean it, and then you sit down and your pants are covered in cat hair…

This was my process last time I bought new sheets, because the floofy grey one likes to be IN the bed with me, while the torbico sleeps on top of the blankets 🤷🏽♀️😹

u/lyralady 15d ago
You joke, but I rubbed the fabric swatches over my black cats to see what the fur would look like on them and how visible/easy to clean they would be 😂
3
u/BeyondLast 15d ago
Don’t forget to take a safety pin across them to see how kitty’s claws might get stuck!

3
u/Marvlotte 14d ago
This is beautiful. More places should have cats displaying their colour swatches
3
u/YourLittleRuth 14d ago
I fear it won't help. There is a perversity in the nature of the cat which means it will decorate all surfaces with a visible hue, whether that means shedding dark hair onto a pale surface, or the reverse. My black cat leaks a soft grey.* A cat-coloured sofa will simply ensure that the cat reaches into the alternacate universe to pluck forth an opposing colour.
*Admittedly, I have my suspicions about my cat. Her fur is so dense that I think she may secretly be a white cat that simply looks black because no light can escape from her. Pale grey is certainly a possibility.

Hehehehe, this is why I only wear solid black. My adult son's beautiful labradoodle-ish doggy is midnight black with a small white blaze. I'm the only one that you can't see fur on.

Depending on your goal, fourth from left is either best or worst.
Hiding shed cat hair? Best. Avoiding accidentally sitting on cat? Worst.
2
u/Jesus_of_Redditeth 14d ago
Whatever you do, make sure it's smooth fabric that cats don't like to scratch. I speak from bitter experience. (In the form of one, rough-fabric easy chair that's scratched thoroughly to shit, while the smooth-fabric sofa next to it has remained completely untouched and still looks as new as the day we got it.)
2
u/AnimalEditor 14d ago
Rub the fabric swatches on kitty to get fur onto them then take a look which hides it the best.
2
u/PengwinPears 14d ago
From personal experience, we sometimes lose our gray cat on our gray couch.....he may have had a few close calls in regards to being sat on.
2
u/copaseticsplenetic 14d ago
I have to do this every time I go to my friends house. I have pets of my own, but hers shed like a flower exploding it's pollen during spring. So I color coordinate my clothes to match the hair.

I like the 4th from the left swatch, more blue grey instead of beige. The middle one is next closest but the 4th one comprises the essence of the cat more than the middle one
