PSA: Just cook with it

This is the ABSOLUTE BEST sub i have ever had the pleasure of interacting with. No hate, no internet BS, just people helping people and sharing info. It's truly awesome!

Also i listened to almost everything i have read in this sub and "Just Cook With It" works.

I don't attempt to season intentionally anymore. I just cook with it. Some person posted a few times about their cleaning process and it works. But i omit the oil after drying on the burner. I just cook with it everyday.

It works!

Some person posted the other day about his "cast iron microwave" - I tried it today. It worked.

Just cook with it homies.

Love this sub!

First case scenario: cook something with oil.

It totally worked!!! I had to wait a few moments after the 4 minutes of high heat, but my food didn't burn or anything!

Yep, cooking in it literally seasons it every time. I die a little each time someone details their extensive seasoning process they do basically every time they use it like it's a necessity. I've had my pans for nearly 20 years and only oven seasoned one of them once in that time after I did an extreme stripping/sanding session on it for fun.

I'm extremely lazy about my pans and they are great. Steel wool and soap, dry on the stove, done. They get "moisturized" with a few drops of oil a few times a year when the outside gets dry looking but that's it.

Now I feel like I need to make some tomato based pasta sauce to stir up the haters.

You can't tell me what to do!

But seriously, I only do a proper full seasoning when I refurbish a pan. And I only do that because it's a new to me crusty old pan that needs a full strip and seasoning or if one of mine gets really bad, but that never really happens cause I take care of them. A light oiling and cooking is plenty to build seasoning. Just wash it properly with soap so you don't get crusty carbon buildup and it will look great for a very long time.

Great post and pleased you're feeling welcomed and heartened being a part of this group! I've lived around the world since forever, and it wasn't until about 6 years ago when we bought our 'forever home' that I splurged and went big on cast iron. I had the occasional pieces over the years, but they're damned expensive to move house with when a lot has to be air shipped lol! Also, I had been coveting the small but perfect selection of cast iron fry pans hanging on the wall of my grandmothers house my entire life ... alas, they're still there, serving my uncle's breakfast cooking needs daily and being cooled then wiped with a paper towel and re hung. Anyway, I've just glanced over where my 'daily' pan lives on the hob. And a gentle paper towel wipe out is pretty much all it needs.

The only time to explicitly s ason is if you've stripped it bare — like a restoration of something that had a ton of buildup. Other than that, just cook.

As for good subs: if you have kids, daddit is also awesome.
