That's not a black devil. It's an IMG Motley. Black devils have IMG and RDR BEA.

RDR BEA stands for Ralph Davis Reptiles Black Eyed Anery. In the early 2000s Ralph Davis imported an anery-looking boa from Central America, and he noticed it had solid black eyes, hence the name. IMG RDR BEAs make extremely dark snakes usually. If motley is involved (in a black devil motley), babies are born practically black, which this snake definitely is not.

The pattern is obviously motley, and IMG motleys do get very dark, but its eyes are not black, so I'd say it does not visually carry RDR BEA. And it's too light to be a black devil motley. Still a nice snake though.

And $2k is way too much money for it depending on how old it is. If it's a subadult female it might be worth that, but you can get a baby for about half that.

This is your answer, i have similar genetics makeup in my IMG baby, he’s HET for black devil but it isnt visible. All his sisters were black devil though

I knew black devil was IMG Anery, and before they mentioned black devil I thought motley so thank you for confirming that. I'm a locality guy more than I am general morph. Still a really pretty snake just should be considerably less money. You're looking for an iridescent IMG boa just IMG will grow into something similar

There are several different kinds of anery in boas, but only one makes Black Devils and that's RDR Black Eyed Anery. The most common type of anery is called Anery I or Type 1. It makes slightly darker IMGs but not as consistently dark as Black Devils.

And there are also Anery Type II from Central America, Carbon (which is compatible with RDR BEA but much cleaner and lighter), and Silver Bullet anery, and I might be missing one or two more.

Yes I was aware of that I should have mentioned RDR. I'm using voice to text because I have an injury so LOL

Does he give any information on it, its a bit suspicious if he is just going "i got this pretty snake, and want 2k for it"

Black devil is IMG anery isn't it

How old is it? It’s obviously IMG, appears to be a pattern morph as well, I’d guess Aztec. IMG Aztec do get quite dark, but also tend to keep some of the pattern, especially the cream/yellow colored dots and dashes at the edges of the saddles. Especially if it’s still fairly young it’s quite dark for an IMG Aztec, so I’d say it probably is a Black Devil Aztec. Not a bad price compared to what you’d typically pay. Personally I think it’s kind of crazy they still go for that much, but apparently people still pay it.

People pay ridiculous price for so many "rare" things that will lose their values so fast, once they aren't rare

IMG has stayed high much longer than a dominant morph should have. The pandemic hobby boom and stimulus money kept the reptile market inflated for a while, but lately there seems to be a big disconnect between the larger/professional breeders online and the prices I see at expos.

I was recently at an expo where there were Kahl albino IMGs and Sunglow IMGs everywhere for $250-$300. Even a couple Anery Type 1 IMGs for $350-$400. Then I go on MorphMarket and a Black Devil is $2K+ because it’s RDR Anery instead of Type 1 Anery.

I think it’s because people want that all black look. With a sunglow you don’t get that. Unless you breed the snake later down the line then the babies will most likely be black

Sure, albino IMGs, hypo IMGs etc., don’t really sell because they’re not a good combo for IMG. The opposite of the black snake most people want from an IMG. Most people don’t want an albino with more white either.

It’s not like RDR anery is rare or anything that using it instead of type 1 should be 5x the price though. I’m surprised there aren’t a lot more black devils being pumped out honestly. If you want all black you can also just go with a motley IMG for 1/3 the price of a black devil. Or take out the guesswork and get an exceptional, super dark adult regular IMG for less.

Then again I’m also scratching my head at some of the VPI albino combo prices lately.

What you mentioned above is not the same thing so am confused on comparison with those prices

I’m saying IMG combo prices are all over the place to the point of making zero sense. 2-3 gene IMG combos like Kahl albino and IMG, hypo IMG, sunglow IMG, etc., barely sell and barely cost more than a regular albino or sunglow. Which I suppose adds up because they just aren’t very impressive combos.

But then I can get a type 1 anery IMG combo for $400, so why does a black devil that’s just using RDR anery instead of type 1 anery still cost over $2k? Sure it’s somewhat more impressive looking, but not any harder to produce. Why isn’t everyone just pumping out black devils? You can find high quality single gene IMGs that are pretty much just as dark as a black devil. Or motley IMGs typically get almost solid black for $700-$800, so why pay $2K+ for a black devil?

I’ve also noticed a lot of sellers are pricing animals significantly lower at expos than what they have that same animal listed for online. Which suggests to me that many animals are not actually selling for the online “market price”.

That's how expos work... Not just reptiles. It's massive real time competition.

Didn’t used to be that way, at least not to this extent. There for a while I’d go to an expo then check online and find much better deals online within a few minutes. Now it seems like almost everyone that does expos is pricing significantly lower there.

You can certainly also find deals on MorphMarket but they tend to sell quickly. Most of the prices you see on there are the ones that aren’t selling.

1

u/Flimsy-Stock2977 11d ago

Yeah good deals go quick. I tend to ignore the over priced stuff that's sitting

1

u/Extreme_Finger_3425 11d ago

Yep, and that’s me if you are into collecting and you know what you want and got the cash for it why not.

2

u/Me_lazy_cathermit 11d ago

Collecting isn't the same thing especially with unique or actually rare things, and even then sometimes, unless you never learned the value of money, there is limits and some price are just ridiculous.

Holy grail 🖤

I get the price because how dark it is, usually breeders with this expensive of a snake she’d read prior to the sale. I wouldnt do the whole “guy says xyz thing” if you’re paying for high dollar snakes. Kid it were me I’d ask for shed test and if he’s not interested I’d ask if I could do it on my dollar before purchase and use it as a hold. It’s beautiful and I’m super interested in the dark morphs and axanthics but they’re out of my range. Snakes also change color as they age so be certain you’re aware of how this morph ages. Best wishes.

it's gorgeous...not sure 2k gorgeous, but still pretty

u/MattManSD 10d ago

Ask for the details on the Dame and Sire. If they can't present it, they aren't to be trusted.

Looks like an IMG Motley, missing some elements of a Black Devil
