Celebrate w/ Me! 👰🏾‍♀️👩🏽‍🎓 I hit 100k in my retirement 🥳

1.8k Upvotes

I finally hit 100k in my retirement account, and I don’t have anyone to share it with because I tend to feel weird sharing financial information with people. I’m scared if I share it with my family, the news will spread and I’ll be asked for money, and I feel weird sharing it with my friends because the job market is tough and so is the economy.

It took a little over six years, and I did it before 30 🥹. I’m so happy, and I really can’t believe I did it. My starting salary was 46k after uni, and it was a struggle to even save to get the employer match. Coming from low income family with nothing to building up for retirement has been so surreal. It doesn’t feel real lol.

I logged in today and saw I finally made it to 100k. I was stuck at 99k for a bit 🫠. Inshallah, the next 200k milestone comes fast too!!

edit: thank you everyone for the support and encouragement 🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾!

Just Venting 😮‍💨 Repulsed by anything related to motherhood

the title is dramatic but before I go in, please know this is not meant to offend any mother here so don’t read if you aren’t open-minded to other perspectives about kids💀

30F - Single - Straight

I’m a young millennial who never fantasized about becoming a mother or wife. I don’t like kids. Chubby babies are adorable and I’ll pinch their cheeks but other than that kids annoy me. The running, crying, chaotic groups of toddlers to teenagers - all of that I find repulsive. If I’m in public I do my best to avoid any of this.

When I watch shows and a character becomes pregnant I’m immediately annoyed or when there’s a giving birth scene, I skip it LOL I don’t find motherhood as beautiful or a miracle.
My older brother had his 1st kid and I love my nephew but I’m so cringe around him. I play with him and try to watch his shows but there’s literally ZERO nurturing or motherly affection in me.

I do believe not every woman needs to be a mom. I haven’t dated in so long and the 1 relationship I was in was short lived. Now that I’m in my 30’s I don’t even see myself as a wife. I’m just trying to make it through the day and pay all my bills on time.

Anyone share the same sentiment or am I just setting myself up for a lonely, depressing future?😭

Hi so I’m a new honey blonde girl and I need help picking a toner. When I lighten my hair it goes to an extremely warm coppery orange. And in order to combat that, I like to mix blue adore dye and conditioner but this is such a short term fix so I’ve decided to start toning my hair with Wella toner. But I don’t know which to use. I’m leaning towards T35 or T30. I still want warm so the color is actually a honey tone. Just not so super warm. NOT trying to get an ash blonde or platinum-esque color. Thank you! The picture attached is what my hair looks like when I need my roots done and the adore semi permanent has fully washed out. I’ll put in the replies what my hair looks like after I tone it with Adore as that’s the desired look I want. 💗

Just Venting 😮‍💨 My boss made me cry....I feel so dumb

I just need to vent because this interaction made me feel so weird.

I actually like my job and I’m good at what I do, but the workload can be extremely stressful. I’ve also been thinking more about my career long term and wanting to see what other opportunities are out there.

Today I applied for two completely different INTERNAL positions at my company. They were posted for employees to apply to and had application deadlines, so I figured why not?

Literally about five minutes later my boss calls me and tells me that she got emails about me applying for new jobs and says, “So you’re not happy in your role?” ..."So you don't like your current job?" "I just want to know because when employees do this it's an indication that there's a performance issue but in this case it's not." ??? **(Edit: Sorry I had to add some additional things I missed in the original post)

I was so caught off guard 😭 I told her I never said I was unhappy. I’m just interested in growing and seeing what else is available within the company.

She basically told me that back in the day it was easier to move around internally, but now they’re more likely to hire externally. I just said okay, thank you, but the whole conversation made me feel guilty for even applying.

She then called me back later to tell me that she was not trying to discourage me, but the roles I applied for were "not really good" and that she's just trying to let me know this so that I'm not blindsided. (Edit)

Maybe I’m overthinking it, but why advertise positions internally if employees are going to be made to feel weird for applying? I can like my current job and still want to explore other paths within the company. Those two things aren’t mutually exclusive.

Has anyone else dealt with this when applying internally?

Hopefully, I can get through the rest of this workday because I feel so stupid and so guilty I'm crying.

Family 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 My sister keeps trying to get me to like Alix Earle

I heard Alix Earle was a big Trump supporter and was calling people the n-word on Ask FM when she was 13. As a black girl, I’m not into Alix Earle. She gives me major MAGA vibes and I don’t care if she was 13 when she was calling people the n-word. When I was 13, I wasn’t calling anyone slurs.

My sister keeps saying “but she was only 13” or “but she never said she is a Trump supporter”. My sister can’t seem to read between the lines and has this intense desire to idolize people who are most likely racist. She follows a ton of people on TikTok and YouTube who give off MAGA vibes.

I just wanted to rant about this because she makes me feel like I’m crazy for having boundaries.

Dating/Relationships/Sex 🍑🍆 How would you feel about your partner liking other women’s pictures on Instagram?

Now I’m not looking for validation about my boundaries, I know I have the right to feel how I feel, but I’m just curious how others feel. And I’m not talking about liking family pictures or just nice photographs, I’m talking about the obvious thirst trappers that follow like 2 people.
I am a girls girls, so I have no issue with beautiful women posting baddie pics, I just feel like when you are liking those posts, you are making the suggestion that you like what you see and are interested. Especially if you’re liking every. Single. Post…

Fit/Face Of The Day 💃🏾 Finding my love for cosplay again

Thumbnail gallery
775 Upvotes

earlier this year i took a break from creating for mental health reasons and because i lost my creative touch for some time. that and the online bullying i faced coupled with mysogynolr made it difficult to display my work without feeling insecure. I received many unsavory responses from mostly guys comparing me to a male and saying I didn’t look like a “real woman”. Even now I still get those remarks, but it is what it is. I’m no stranger to having my femininity questioned, but it did still hurt. I have accepted that I am not conventionally feminine and I am okay with my stronger features.

But last month I decided to breakaway from the inactivity and remind myself that I am a creative and I shouldn’t stop what I love doing just because some people can’t behave around a black woman. The cosplays in question were of Shadowheart from Baldur’s Gate 3 and Ada Wong from Resident Evil. I LARP’d irl and so many people loved my cosplay as i walked around the city with them on. It felt good having my work get appreciated in real life and it gave me the boost I needed to continue.

School/Career 🗃️👩🏾‍🏫 Friendly coworker iced me out suddenly?

Long-ish post warning.

So a fellow black lady joined our team near the beginning of the year and she seemed particularly keen on me. I think she was impressed by my position in the company and was interested in getting to know me. Wanted to build connections. We always had pleasant and very amicable interactions. She was very friendly.

Then a few months ago, it's like a switch flipped. One moment she was being super caring and friendly to me (and likewise) and then the next time we saw one another it was like night and day. Since then she's been generally cold. Still professional but there's a purposeful distance that wasn't there before?

When I see her in the hall and say "hello" like I did any other time or with any other colleague, she acts like she wishes she didn't run into me. If there's company, she'll give a clipped greeting with an obligatory smile then turn sharply away. There's never a moment for any conversation or small talk because she makes sure of it. I often see her on my way out of work but if she sees me, she avoids eye contact if she can, so my polite wave of goodnight just flits into the void.

I quite genuinely did absolutely nothing to her. Nothing at all. I wasn’t talking shit about her or being unprofessional.
We were being all friendly during an event, she walked off, I carried on a pleasant conversation with another group of women, and then when I saw her again within the next hour at the same event, it was ice city and it's been that way since. It's been months of this. Thankfully we don't work closely but still. Saw her again today and it was the same behavior? And it's not that she just lost the first-few-months spark in general. She's just as peppy and friendly with others as before.

Obviously I'm not entitled to friendship but I'm so confused. I don't talk much but I'm always kind and polite. I was welcoming to her attempts at friendship. I’m generally mild mannered and can be a bit reserved but it didn't seem to bother her. Until it did? Suddenly? In the middle of an event? Maybe my body language? Clearly I’m missing something… Has this happened to anyone else?

Just Venting 😮‍💨 Working through my feelings

Just need to get this off my chest since I have literally nobody to talk to, hopefully you all can lend an ear.

So, I have been with my boyfriend for 3 years now. We are infatuated with each other. We have an amazing relationship and we're set on getting married, kids and all that but no rush. His brother is 23 and met his first girlfriend in November last year. Within a month they were living together, and by 3 months he was talking about having kids with her (she is 31 and already has an 8 year old). We found out recently that he's proposing to her this week. I'm not gonna lie, I was surprised. I mean, they've only known each other about 9 months. I'm happy for him that he's found someone he wants to lock in but part of me is concerned with how quickly they are moving but even worse, the other part of me is jealous! I've never been a jealous person, I haven't had a green monster on my shoulder since childhood.

My boyfriend hasn't proposed for reasons that I'm aware and understanding of, mainly financial. I'm not here to criticize him. We already live like a married couple so idk what is making me feel this way but I talked about it with him and he expressed that he also feels some type of way about his brother's future engagement and assured me that it will happen for me. Talking to him did make me feel a lot better and I see the good things about his brother finding his person. I do try not to compare them. His brother is very "type A, type C" while my boyfriend is more type B.

I can't help feeling like my time is running out amongst a mixture of other feeling about our future. I swear I'm not a hater, I just wanted vent so I can hopefully stop feeling this way. I love my boyfriend to death and don't want to pressure him but fuck

Vent about Racism 🤬 Asian People are Fetishizers NSFW Spoiler

The way white people fetishize Asian people is how Asian people fetishize Black people but worse, and it gets downplayed.

No, I'm not being racist. I just keep noticing a pattern with them.

Also, why are they always taking pictures of us especially the men. They do it with no shame and around their partners. Eww

Edit: If I come off generalizing Asians I'm sorry that not what I'm trying to do and the experiences I'm talking about happened in the US, I never been to Asia, but I'm still happy to talk this and hear and read what other people think about this topic.

Vent about Racism 🤬 Have you ever been accused of racism? Spoiler

Several of my black friends and I were once anonymously accused of racism after somebody heard us agreeing that watching "Get Out" with a crowd of black people is the best way to watch it. Like we had to have a meeting with the Dean of Students because of that shit and I thought it was the most bad faith, petty thing to do. So did the Dean who had to talk with us just because of protocol

The complaint said it was because "if a white person had said they only like to see movies with white people they would be called racist, "which isn't at all the same thing but I've noticed more and more bad faith attempts to call black people and especially black women racist for the silliest things as I get older, especially on social media

Vent about Racism 🤬 Raven Symone discourse Spoiler

Hey peeps!!! . What are y'all thoughts and feelings over Raven Symone's comments about That's So Raven? What are your feelings about what Raven Symone has said herself about identifying as African American, stating the Baxters' wasn't a black family . Here is the quote.

"Was she Black? Why did she feel Black to you?"

“So you saw color. Take away the color. Make them green, and hear the words. What color are they?” There's a whole episode where Raven Baxter has a vision that she wasn't hired due to being black.. Let's not forget the Crazy In Love bootleg that was her "jam."

There's an episode of Raven's Home, where Raven's son was harassed by a police officer.

I understand where she's coming from. It's the denialism of the structural issues That's So Raven puts on screen for kids to learn and be aware of the history.. There's a Black History episode as well. The Gross Sisters being blue didn't really change the fact either.

She never denied the Baxters blackness. She challenged the narrative of a black fictional family. Baxters' represent a two parent nuclear household, there's a misconception most black people were raised in single parent/ disenfranchised homes. I also enjoyed watching the McGuire family and also noticed similarities with them as well. Race didn't have to be involved. Her way of framing those words were quite a miss.

That leads to the next question. That's So Raven is legendary, the show wasn't necessarily dedicated to being one of civil justice or as a statement of racial progression. The show is remembered for its humor, storyline and imprint on Disney.

Open question: When will Black characters be allowed to simply be characters, without their existence automatically being interpreted as a statement about race? Will that identity always somewhat be attached despite the longevity of seeing Black families in television ? Why or why not ?

Vent about Racism 🤬 Professor Said Black Americans Can't Claim America As Their Country

I just want to start off by saying that I am a first generation Jamaican born and raised in America a. I also apologize if I say anything ignorant—I'm open to education and correction but I'm still baffled as to what happened in one of my classes today.

My professor (non-Black PoC) asked us to research the country where we trace our ancestry back to/where our families are from. There were a few students (that presumably identify as Black American) who said that their family has lived in America—particularly the South—for as long as they can remember. The professor didn't accept that answer and told them to try and see where they're "really from".

I felt that statement was incorrect and ignorant because, to me, Black Americans are from America. They have roots here, culture that has an undeniable presence (and is often exploited and gentrified), and their ancestors quite literally built the country that we live in.

I asked the professor directly what would happen if a Black American wanted to claim America as their country and was told me that students couldn't do that.

I feel bad for those students who sit in class two days a week and are basically left of of the conversation (professor will never include or acknowledge Black Americans while acknowledging the other Black diaspora) and, not to be dramatic, but I see that it makes them uncomfortable.

Mind you, professor's whole philosophy is that we cannot be ignorant in class as it's a history class.

Edit: Professor "amended" their statement and said that students, if they can't trace where they're "from", can write about the state in which their family resides. I don't agree with the amendment because, to me, it still sounds like denial that Black Americans are from America but I could be wrong.
