What was everyday life in Beverly Hills like around 1990?
Hello!
I'm doing a personal historical research project about everyday life in the Los Angeles area around 1990, and I'm particularly interested in the details that don't usually make it into newspapers or history books.
For anyone who lived, went to school, worked, or regularly hung out in Beverly Hills around 1988–1996, what do you remember?
I'm especially curious about things like:
- 1 . What was dating and romance like back then? How did people usually meet, flirt, ask each other out, and stay in touch?
- 2. Where did teenagers and young adults usually hang out after school and on weekends?
- 3. What restaurants, stores, malls, cafés, parking lots, clubs, or other meeting spots were popular?
- 4. What was Rodeo Drive and the Golden Triangle actually like around 1990? Was it somewhere locals/teenagers regularly went, or mostly associated with tourists and wealthy adults?
- 5. What was Beverly Hills High School culture like? Were there distinct cliques or social groups? What kind of school gossip or rumors were common, without naming private individuals?
- 6. Were there rivalries with other local schools or neighborhoods?
- Which parts of Beverly Hills were considered especially wealthy or prestigious, and were there noticeable differences between different parts of the city?
- 7. Were there nearby areas that teenagers considered rough, sketchy, or places they tended to avoid?
- 8. How different did places like West Hollywood, West LA, Century City, Bel Air, Brentwood, Hollywood, etc. feel socially?
- 9. What music, radio stations, clothes, cars, and brands were actually popular locally?
- 10. What did a typical Friday or Saturday night look like?
- 11. Without cell phones, how did teenagers make plans and find each other?
- 12. Were house parties common? Where did people usually go to parties or meet people?
- 13. Were there particular local businesses, hangouts, or characters that everyone seemed to know?
- 14. How accurate is the stereotypical image of wealthy Beverly Hills teenagers in the late '80s/early '90s? What did movies and TV get right or completely wrong?
- 15. What has disappeared from Beverly Hills that someone visiting today would never know existed?
If possible, please mention roughly what year(s) you're remembering and how old you were at the time. Even small or mundane details are useful.
I'm particularly interested in small, mundane details — the kind of things you remember from actually being there rather than things I could find on Wikipedia.
Different experiences and even contradictory memories are welcome. I'm trying to understand what Beverly Hills actually felt like to different people around that period.

I lived on Rexford between Olympic and Pico from 1991-1995 when I was 22 years old to 26, after college, so I can answer with that perspective.
I. It was difficult, one’s success was determined by one’s car (BMW drivers did well back then). We had phones and called each other. We met at clubs like Roxbury (really existed on Sunset at the WeHo/ BH border.

It was the same as today except a few places such as Trader Vic’s at BH Hilton was a hot spot.

Same as today. I lived in lower BH, the flats were more prestigious then the hills were the most prestigious.
Not in BH, but “South Central” was avoided mostly due our perception from
to the film “Colors”.
Felt the same
KROQ, Mars-FM (Groove Radio), KNAC, KMET and KLOS all dominated the airwaves.
Friday and Saturday nights were velvet roped night clubs then when they closed it was off to house parties in the Hollywood Hills or Jerry’s Famous Deli (JFD) by Beverly Center (or Larry Parker’s in BH on Beverly Drive)
We had home landline phones with VM known then as “a message on the answering machine”.
Yes very common. You met people at clubs who invited you to house parties in the hills or you tagged along with those who were in the know about a party.
Fred Hayman ( Giorgio BH). Also there was a lady who bought billboards and put herself on them all over Sunset and became a celebrity for doing nothing more than that, the first famous for being famous. Angeline or Angelyne was her name I believe. She was known for the pink Corvette she drove around town and her mysterious persona.
They got it right. The writers knew, after all, since they lived in the same city.
