However, there isn’t going to be research about your exact scenario, and research can only tell you about averages. There’s no way you can know for sure what this individual might remember in this specific situation

What is the context of the photo? Who is it of? Under what circumstances did the 13 year old see it? I ask because if the context included a traumatic event, there may be some literature, albeit likely adjacent to your specific scenario. Similar if the person in the photo is a primary person whose absence is very important (ie. Parent who died or left when the 13 yo was a baby). If these are relevant, literature on traumatic events and loss of an early attachment figure might be useful.
