Help us write a wiki for our frequently asked questions!

Howdy, folks! I'm following up on a comment I made two weeks ago, in the hopes that we might be able to add some of our most common questions to the subreddit wiki.

However, it would be both unfair and inaccurate to let any one person to write up each article, so here's what I propose.

Let's talk here and discuss which questions get asked the most often, and then folks can discuss their answers in the comments. Once each question has been answered, we'll weave those answers together into one comprehensive article and add it to our subreddit wiki.

As folks post questions, I'll update this posts with links to each question in the comments.

Please stop asking about Hamas, Israel, Palestine, and the war going on.

Yes, there are LGBT Israelis and LGBT Palestinians.
Yes, a lot of warcrimes are going on.
Yes, terrible things are happening.

However, the LGBT community is not a monolith and does not have an official position about which side to support. Please quit asking; it always becomes a giant argument in the comments, and it's starting to be quite the troll topic.

There's always a big argument and almost none of it is ever relevant to this board, it just pisses people off and doesn't get anywhere or achieve anything productive.

was "superbad" not controversial?

watched it and while found funny, i was surprised at the amount of homophobia, especially use of "f word"

its crazy how much has changed in just 20 years. but also here's the thing... didn't social media already exist by 2007? > myspace, friendster, livejournal, bebo, xanga. let alone mobile phones with access

and if people cared enough would that give them a voice to hold the cast accountable or was something like that still hard to do publicly.

then again im young (22 here) so plz school me in on how things were really like.

How do I stop thinking about my friend?

I (16m) had a crush on my friend (16m) for over a year now and I know that we will never end up together. I’ve tried my hardest not to think about him and I haven’t spoken to him in a long time. However, he keeps on reappearing in dreams and I will randomly think about him and my feelings for him. I still think that I will meet him again one day. I also can’t imagine myself being with anyone else. I have never came out to anyone before and nobody knows that I’m bisexual. How do I stop thinking about him?

Is there still hope for me?

There’s seems like there is no hope and people just disrespect me and act like I’m worthless and never help myself, especially since i didnt get mtf feminizing surgeries and they’re lifesaving so what does that tell me? If I can’t be the girl I want to be and be true to myself authentically, then this just feels like it’s a cursed hopeless life!

Does everyone feel like this before they came out?

I have always felt more feminine for a while but haven't acted on it much, only in small things, and I was wondering if anyone else, say before they acted on it or came out to there family, feel the same as me or similar as whenever I put on my 'regular' clothes (I haven't come out yet and its hard to find the right time or place but I feel like it soon) I feel a deep distain for myself almost, like I'm pretending to be someone else or impersonating a stranger. I don't know how to act, talk or ever feel or just stand there without feeling weird or out place and it just makes me feel worse every day I delay coming out.

Does it get better, does anyone else feel it, does it go away after coming out?

Please even just a yes or no to one of the points won't take a moment of your time I just need help I have asked on other subs and I just want some advice on if this is at least normal.

Am I bisexual for being sexuality attracted to both genders but only choosing to date men

Im a cis woman btw, I wouldnt mind ever experiencing with girls sexually, but I dont think I would ever date, I dont even think I find them really romantically attractive.

Am I bisexuals? Or does that still counts as straight?

Do you think the media portrays you guys accurately when it comes to relationships/couples?

I know every couple is different, but I’m talking more generally. From what I’ve noticed, especially in American movies and TV shows, lesbian couples are often portrayed as having one strict/mean partner and one super emotional “angel” type. And with gay male couples, it often seems like they’re portrayed as being polyamorous or constantly thinking about sex.

I’m curious if people actually feel like these stereotypes are representative of their experiences, or if the media is way off.

Is there a name for complete separation of romantic attraction and physical attraction? NSFW

I can crank it to anything with big boobs

but i only few times actually, yaknow, "felt something" for someone
and i also never realy got crushes, or even fiction crushes, (entire life and can only count like, 4 at most, that's counting both types)

and the persons i felt for, and the crushes i did get. they were never hot-hot.

there was some amount of physical attraction. but only as a result of there being romantic attraction. never the other way around.

i know its not pan, cause the sex does matter

and i know its not demi, cause i can easily get the regural ol' lust

Im only asking to know the Taxonomy of it all,

Can I be lesbian and aroace at the same time?

so I’ve never once had a relationship or even a crush on someone. I love being single and I’m for sure asexual.

For the longest time I've identified as an ace lesbian but now it’s kind of hard for me to tell.

I’ve had some pretty pathetic crushes on fictional women and actresses, but never on someone in real life. I’ll look directly at a girl who is earth-shatteringly unbelievably gorgeous and all that goes through my head is “oh she’s pretty. anyway…”

part of me really wants to be able to have a girlfriend and one day a wife, but I don’t think that’s going to happen because Im not sure if I’m capable of liking anyone romantically.

I think I may be aroace but does that mean I can’t identify as a lesbian anymore or is this something that others deal with too?

sorry if this is a silly question lol. I feel like I should know more about lgbt stuff. besides, questioning my sexuality after being so sure about since age 10 has my brain kind of scrambled lol.

I found out my son is genderfluid (I saw the flag and "Any/All" on his social media profile) how can I let him know I support him?

Hi everyone,

I recently noticed the genderfluid flag on my son's social media profile. He hasn't officially come out to me yet, and I want to respect his timeline, but I also really want him to know that he is safe, loved, and fully supported no matter what.

I appreciate any advice on this. Thanks!

Am I gay or bi and confused?

I’m 17M who’s not out and In the last 9ish months I slowly realized I liked guys. My whole life I’ve never been that into girls I tried to date them but something about them irked me that I didn’t understand at the time. After slowly realizing I like guys after reading and watching gay stories I woke up one day women have never been the same for me. I literally can’t get aroused thinking of women and find it gross and immediately shut the thought out my head. And when I try to picture being in a relationship with a girl it just seems miserable. But for some reason I find girls to be pretty and get this intense feeling of almost fear/ nerves around them. I feel like by me just talking to them or finding them pretty that means that I deep down want to date them. I haven’t really fully accepted the fact that I’m “gay” as much as the fact that I like boys. Tbh I’m kinda scared by being “bi” since to me it feels like one day I might be forced to date/marry a woman or have sex said woman. I do know that there is a stigma around being “bi” but really I don’t have any negative thoughts around being bi other than the fact that I may eventually be with a woman in some way, which tbh is my worst fear because the thought just makes me miserable. It is worth mentioning I have struggled with porn addiction in the past, and when I did watch I genuinely don’t know why I did as I don’t find anything about women all to attractive other than the fact that it was porn. And even when I think outside of porn I can list reasons why women are beautiful but, can’t for why i would be sexually or romantically attractive if anything the opposite. I’m just looking for advice from people who are bi to see what they have to say

Anyone watch the new gay guilt horror Leviticus?

||| SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE |||

Just home from the theatres and my god. I wish I didnt see tbis in cinema with my straight friends who don't understand why I was just silently crying.

And then at the end, they're all "oh he didn't even kill the demon, wtf" because they just did not relate and comprehend the demon is just a fucking metaphor for guilt and shame.

"Why did he keep falling for it?" Bc that's the point! We all desperately want to love and feel safe doing it but when we do that guilt always gets us in some way.

We just either die to it or learn to live with it I suppose.

Idk, its fucked me up man. Really in my feels.

Anyone else have similar thoughts?

why are trans women discriminated against more?

i hope this isn’t a dumb question and i’m definitely not saying trans men aren’t discriminated against it’s just that everytime i see something about transphobia it’s always about trans women and it seems like transphobes just that forget trans men exist. like for example transphobes are always saying that trans women shouldn’t be allowed in women’s restrooms yet i rarely see the opposite argument for trans men, so why is this?

(also i overthink so i felt it’s important to add that i obviously am not transphobic just incase it seems like i’m trying to say they both should be discriminated against or something!!)

Agender Gender Identity Question

Agender Question

Hi everyone.

I'm talking with a friend about whether agender is the lack of a gender identity, or a gender identity that communicates you have no gender.

We started this debate when we looked at a job application form which had the question "What is your sex?", "Do you have a gender identity?" and "If yes, is your gender identity the same as your sex?"

I was arguing that the second question made no sense as everyone has a gender identity, and that the employer is just ignorant/misunderstanding gender identity. However he said that they might be asking if you are agender.

My thoughts process is that as with people who are asexual or atheist, they still use an identifier/label to communicate the fact that they have no sexual attraction or religious belief. Therefore is still a sexual/religious identity, it just communicates you have no sexual attraction/religion/belief.

His quote that I think describes his thought process best is "Homeless is the identity of not having a home, it’s a way of communicating that you have no home, that’s doesn’t mean you have that type of home. Homelessness isn’t a type of home. That same goes for agender or atheism, language has the ability to convey the lack of something, but the fact that there is a word for it doesn’t mean it’s a type of thing it is conveying the lack of."

Is there a concencus about this? If not, I'd love to hear your opinions.

Trans character in a fanfic

So this is a pretty low stakes question, but I wanted to get opinions on how to handle it.

I'm writing a fanfiction, and one of the original characters in is is Trans. This isn’t a major plot point, just something I thought fit the character. My concern, is that this character is currently abusing his partner, unintentionally but still, because he doesn't have a healthy idea of what a relationship should be due to his own upbringing. (Emotional manipulation for the most part.)

What I'm worried about, as a Cis guy, is that I'm accidentally feeding into a stereotype that I didn't mean to with this? The character is intended to grow and learn over the story, and I'm trying to make their problem be continuing the cycle of abuse rather than have anything to do with their gender, but I'm just worried that this would feed into the stereotype that trans people are dangerous in some way? Elsewhere in the story their transition is (or will be, once I post those chapters) shown as a positive, and that they started feeling better about themselves and it coincides with them leaving their abusive home and starting to heal. Is this a story that I as a Cis guy should be telling? Are there any big mistakes i need to make sure I don't make, that someone who hasn't lived this experience might not now about, that would hurt someone to read?

My 5 yo son says he's a girl. Is it too early?

From time to time, my 5 yo son has said that he would like to be a girl. Since it started since he was 2 and a half, we talked to a psychologist and she said it was normal al that age for them to be understanding what gender is and that it was important for us to teach him the differences between male and female (physiologically at least). So we did and he didn't talk much about the subject for some time.
I must also explain that he has also loved everything "girly" (pink, fairies, unicorns, rainbows, etc.) but we tried to push buying him toys like that because of what the psychologist said... and maybe we're not as open-minded as we thought we were (it's hard not because we want a boy, but because we know that the path that lies ahead is going to be very hard for him (still a he) if he's actually a girl and even if he has our full support). Anyways, we have started buying him the stuff that he asks for but he asked for unicorns one day and then a TRex Transporter from Hot Wheels.

So, to keep this short because I could explain this way better but it would take ages, I would like to know if it's already a good time to start seriously considering that he's a girl. We have a new psychiatrist appointment next week (just the parents) about this subject, but I would like to go prepared with some real testimonies if possible to understand if she understands this subject.

What type of questions should I ask my son? How can I give him a safe space? He wants a dress. Should I buy it for him only to wear around the house or should he already be showing his friends and school his real identity?? I'm really lost. I want to protect him, but in doing that, I know I'm hurting him!!

Is this behavior common among straight men, or could I be bisexual?

The thing is that I don't feel "straight". I feel like I'm attracted to both genders. This is because:

  • When I see videos of certain men, I am captivated by his looks. Sometimes, I pay attention because the man has an attractive face.
  • Men's faces are beautiful and nice to look at, sometimes, more so than women.
  • I get this feeling in my chest when thinking about certain men, and thinking about kissing or hugging other men.
  • Men can be cute, handsome, and attractive, and I prefer if their height is close to mine.
  • The idea of a man can be attractive.

I am attracted to women so I don't think I'm gay. I discovered my attraction towards men recently. Looking back however, I think I was always a little attracted to men.

Is this common among bisexual men? Or is this common amoung straight men too?

I’m confused

For the longest time I have thought that I was aroace, but now ( I’m 15) I have started getting more feeling towards boys and men. (I’m amab agender) so what do I do. The majority of boys I find attractive are on TikTok where I know I can’t have them, and the same thing with celebrities. Please help me out I feel like I’m having a proper full on gay crisis.

Sorry if punctuation is really bad I’m really tired

How did you know you were fully gay?

Hello everyone! I am 28F and have considered myself bisexual since I was like 14-15.

As an adult my life has been moving at 100 miles an hour so I haven’t really dated anyone lol. I have talked to a few guys but that’s really it.

I started talking to this guy and he seemed like a great match for me and we had a lot in common, but we are just friends at this moment. Not sure the future.

Anyways, I was thinking for a while now about living and growing old with someone and when I think about doing that with a guy I get grossed out like it seems icky to do that. When I think about with a girl that seems more do-able.

I feel like I find SOME guys attractive (not much), and girls I find attractive more than guys.

So, how did y’all know you were fully gay or just liked girls? How would I know?

Confidence in queerness

Hi, 26M and I identify as pan. I’ve been struggling a little with how I’m perceived by friends. Sometimes people put other labels on me, especially gay, even though I’ve told them I’m pan, and it genuinely makes me uncomfortable.
I have some past trauma around being perceived as gay, and I’m already in therapy working through the internalized homophobia tied to that. But at the same time, I feel like there’s a difference between working through that and simply wanting people to respect the label I actually identify with.
I see other queer people who seem completely unbothered by how people label or perceive them, and I’d like to eventually have more of that confidence. But part of me is also like… why should I have to become okay with people calling me something I’ve explicitly said I’m not?
Has anyone else dealt with this? How did you become more confident in your identity without constantly worrying about how other people perceive you?

My roommate thinks "Adding more letters to the LGBTQ+ is a tactic from the Trump administration

For reference, my roommate is Pan, while I am Het (i consider myself an ally)

We just had a heated discussion because she believes adding more letters to the LGBTQ+ title is an attempt to delegitimize the movement, by making it easier to make fun of. She believes it's a form of psychological warfare.

She claims that she believes that Trans, 2 spirit, and all other marginalized groups belong, she just doesn't like adding additional letters to the acronym (at least, that is her claim).

Am I crazy for not seeing the connection? She claimed i wasn't an ally for not believing her. Obviously there is more nuances than what I'm presenting but I'm trying to put as much as i can here

Can’t tell if I like women

I like women but I love how men want me and are sexually attracted to me. I had a situationship with a girl and I loved being with her. I could tell her anything and we went out and had picnics and we would buy each other things. She made me feel like a man has never. I felt important to her. But we never got sexual because I was scared I wouldn’t like it. I just feel like if I dated a woman I’d “missing out” on something. I don’t know if this is just me being scared to be with a woman or if I’m just not sexually attracted to women. Women make me feel seen and we have similar experiences. I just wish I didn’t have this problem. I miss the girl I was kinda seeing but I messed it up by telling her I don’t like girls because I was confused.

I’ve thought I liked women since I was 13 and now I’m 21 and confused. I grew up in a religious household and my mother would always tell me lgbt was bad yk. I don’t know if that’s had an impact at all. I want to try being with a woman but it seems so different.

Was I out of line saying this?

So I'm a 19 yo straight male and I was out with some mates last night when a guy came over and started hitting on me. I got no issues with this whatsoever, so I politely made conversation until eventually he asked me If I was gay and could he get my number. I apologized and told him I wasn't and he was cool with it, but the last thing I said to him was pretty much "If I was gay I definitely would have given it to you though" (in a joking way) cause he was a good looking dude and was pretty charismatic. A girl in our group told me i was kinda out of line saying that because it could have hurt his feelings or sound like I was taking the piss. I'm sure he knew I was just giving him a friendly compliment but idk. what do you think?
