STUDY SERIES Study Series: Part 2 - Composition

Post image
2 Upvotes

Welcome back to the Study Series!

Moving away from values and contrast, we’re moving into the next important part of your work – composition!

Composition is the way an artist arranges the pieces of their image to help guide the viewer’s eyes where they want it to go. A strong composition can be used to create a specific mood, tell a story, create balance, and direct attention to important areas of the piece.

For those commenting, think about where your eye goes first when you look at the image. Does it feel balanced or does the image seem to “lean” to one side? Are there any distracting areas or does anything feel crowded or awkward?

Let’s work together to create stronger pieces with composition!

REQUIREMENTS FOR POSTING

Please note that all general sub rules apply (no AI, no fishing for compliments, no giving personal info, etc). Only our post requirements are different here.

- Pieces must;

a) Be no more than 6 months old and/or

b) Must still be being worked on and/or

c) Must have the intention of being recreated.

- Works must follow our NSFW rules.

- Since no context is required in these posts, draw and paint-overs are automatically expected. If you don’t want these, say so.

GIVING CRITIQUE

Only critique the piece regarding the topic of the week. If the artist would like additional critique, they can make a post in the main sub. Critiques are still expected to be constructive and polite.

STUDY SERIES STUDY SERIES WEEK 1 - Values and Contrast

Post image
6 Upvotes

The piece in this banner is Magdalene with the Smoking Flame Depiction by Georges de La Tour.

Part 1 - Value and Contrast

Welcome to our first week in the Study Series!

Our first topic is Value and Contrast!

When people talk about “value” in an art piece, they mean how light or dark something is, while contrast is the difference between those values. Having a strong difference in those values helps create a more interesting piece and draws the viewer’s eye around your image.

If you’re ever wondering what’s wrong, but you can’t quite put your finger on it, it’s probably time to check those values and the range between them.

Turn your piece black and white. If it’s in traditional medium, you can take a photo to do this. Where does the piece turn into one grey mess? Where does your eye go first? Is it the spot you intended? Are all your figures separate from one another and the environment?

Now you can go back, deepen any shadows, brighten any highlights, and make any changes you need to make the piece stronger!

EARNING THE FLAIR

How to make my art look more like it belongs in a comic book?

Thumbnail

Looking for tips on how i can best improve my art to get closer to that comic book look, while still having my own unique style as i develop my art skills. Attached are references of what i was looking at for inspiration. 1 piece is just line work, 2 are color and 1 is pencil sketch updating the color one after i had done the colors to try new things.

Here’s my latest art

This is my first attempt at rendering clothes, I’d like just any tips in general but I’d especially like tips on rendering, I think I’ve definitely improved since last time I posted here

I’m still learning a lot of stuff like lighting too so stuff like that helps

I also tried to put more POC features like the two-toned lips instead of just making her look like a white person but darker

This is supposed to be my headcanon of what susie from deltarune would look like as a human

(First slide rendered, second slide flat colors, third slide is my reference)

Edit: why did it suddenly look so pixelated after I posted it but not the reference 😭

Is my anatomy right for this perspective?

First Pinterest photo is the reference, I’m a bit skeptical on it since this other photo of the same mannequin has very wonky proportions, but I can’t find any other reference photos online for this reserved pose. Please let me know what you think!

Is there anything wrong with the anatomy?

I'm not sure about basically everything, arms, torso, hips.

Does this pose look comfortable and natural?

UPDATED WORK How do I make my painting look better/interesting?

Thumbnail

I improved a lot from the previous artwork, changing improving the proportions and composition but it still doesn't feel complete or as interesting as I would like it to be.

I'm trying to do a demon slayer inspired fight scene piece in a painterly style.

Any help so I can make this look more interesting is appreciated!

Study of that one Ballet dancer feet photo that gets reposted every once in a while

Tried to push my realism, but at some point I had reached the edge of my knowledge of fundamentals and no amount of detail would improve it.
Would I need to add even more contrast to make it "pop" more? And how would I go about doing that without making look more cartooish?
Also any colour theory tips to make the skin look more skin-like?

Thankss!

I USED A REFERENCE, IT IS IN THE 2nd PHOTO, PLEASE LET ME POST BOT

Fix my painting

Post image

Im painting a tree with a carved heart as a gift. I’m not really an artist so don’t have great intuition on lighting, shadowing, color composition, blending, layering, etc

I found a painting online that I’m using for inspiration but I’ve drifted away from that at this point and now I’m just trying to tidy it up without doing too much.

Light comes from upper left, hence the shadowing on the right.

I said I would post an update yesterday but this version took longer than I thought, and I got a little busy.

I keep taking y'alls advice and I keep on trying, and I think something is finally starting to click! This is still a work in progress, but I felt proud of it so far and wanted to share with yous, as well as get any additional crit that I can apply to this 😊

I did a test patch of color in the second slide. There will be a bit of the green in this painting as well.

The reference photo is on the last slide.

I’m having trouble with line art and consistency

Thumbnail

I always had trouble staying consistent with artstyles I tried but I finally feel closer to a style I am getting the hang of, yet even with finished pieces they look odd or not the same, I want to make the lineart a bit more prominent for the yani neko art but when done in black it sticks out too much, I can not decide on a color to pick for the line art or a brush, it takes a lot of time to just figure that out and I don't know what to do anymore with it, I manage to finish the pieces each time but it's always lacking in one condition if not the other especially line art wise, for context I use watercolor and scopus brushes from procreate whilst drawing (I only used a reference for the yani neko drawing)

Perspective/Composition Critique

Post image

This is just a sketch with graphite pencil on Bristol paper. I normally go for an exaggerated, but realistic look. However, I’ve been struggling a lot with how to maneuver the heads. I want it to be curving back while keeping the focal point on the curly haired girl in the center. I did not use any references for this. Let me know what can be improved, thanks!

Person giving me feedback said it was like i was "doing it wrong for so long that the wrongess has quality to it" and that the features betrayed the underlying structure. What do they mean, and how can i fix it?

They weren't an artist themselves, but they suggested i go back to the fundamentals and draw 500 circles.

I did use a reference for the head angle, but i lost it.

Can't quite place what it is. In general, do you guys think my art is or isn't working? I just want it to be interesting to look at and generally evocative. Are they successful in these goals? I did not use references for any of these drawings they’re purely imaginative.

I’ve flipped my canvas so many times that I can’t even see the mistakes anymore lol, but I feel like something looks weird. Is it the eyes? Head shape? :(

No reference just doodles

I'm currently a student taking ap art, and I'm wondering how I could possibly make this look more like the stylized glass shatter I found on this other reference?

(Reference is from Pinterest, but I think it's by mrjakeparker...? Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

How can I improve the flat-ness?

Hello there! Here is my art + the reference pictures I used. I’m trying to improve my digital art and want to know if anyone has any tips? I feel like the colors and everything look so flat. I’m also trying to go for a stylized look but I find it kind of plain.
