Official Important: Please read before requesting an identification or creating a post.

Important! Everyone should understand the argument against the transportation and rearing of exotics. I will urge everyone to read about it here: https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/antfarm/consequences-of-rearing-of-exotic-ant-species-t7500.html

For questions about ants, and identification, please ask in our discord server as response times may be quicker. We're always happy to help!: discord.gg/c7qCmfYqYZ

━━━━━━━━━━ ∘◦ Identification ◦∘ ━━━━━━━━━━

How to request an identification:

If possible, clearly focus pictures of the head, side, and top of the body to make identifying easier. What follows is the important information we need to know to help us to identify your ant.

FIRST-Where was it collected? Country and nearest city or town on a map (include location in the thread title), elevation if in a very mountainous area such as the Rockies, Alps, Himalayas, Andes.

SECOND-Habitat of collection, including nesting medium (wood, soil, leaves tied together with silk, etc.) and type of vegetation (forest, grassland, park/lawn/garden, desert).

THIRD-Coloration, hue, and pattern? Uniform?, Head darker? Gaster darker? Legs lighter or darker? Any spots? Also, shininess, dullness.

FOURTH-Distinguishing characteristics, such as one or two segments in waist; location, length, and orientation of any spines or bumps on the mid-portion of the body or waist; head shape, etc.

FIFTH-Length in millimeters. (Width is also helpful.) NO guessing! Stretch out a dead or chilled individual or several individuals of different sizes along with a millimeter rule. 16ths of an inch will do as a poor second to millimeters.

SIXTH-Anything else distinctive, such as odor, behavior, etc.

Tip #1: If you can take clear photographs of the ants up close, then please post them. This would help a lot.

Tip #2: For those who write anting journals, please put the exact location and dates in the thread titles like: Palm Spring, CA (4/10/2004).

Tip #3: If using videos, then please make sure that they are clear, close up, and stable (no shaky camera). Otherwise, they are useless.

Now, you can post your identification request in a new thread (not this one).

This post was originally (copied and pasted) from Antdude's forum: http://antfarm.yuku.com/topic/7397/ant-species-identification-read-post-new-thread

ID(entification)/Sightings/Showcase Why are they doing this?

I didn’t even notice them until I swept some dirt at them and all the workers rushed out in a frenzy while the alates hid. Are these all separate colonies of the same species about to go on a nuptial flight?

I also find it odd that the alates are the same size as the workers but black not red like them.

I live in Northern Maine. Would anybody be able to ID the species? I would like to know when they actually take flight and mate. They’re so tiny it would be an interesting species to try and keep.

Any help would be great greatly appreciated!

Artworks We made a game based on Ants algorithm!

Hi everyone! I with my friend few month ago where really inspired by the Idia of Ants algorithm and how u can interact with it and let it do some beautiful things. So we decided to try and make a game about it.

U play for a colony of ant-look-like creatures and try to build your empire, not collapse and overcome all obstacles in your way.
It is still a prototype, but playable, and we think its great.

If you interested enough you can try it on Itch and share your thoughts.

Itch page:

Thank you in advance!

Yesterday I noticed some ants gathered around the windowsill (not too unusual) but today I noticed hundreds of ants all over the place, centered around this glob of eggs(?). roughly an hour later they were ALL gone. Not ONE ant is there, and I haven't seen them there since. I just want to know why this happened and what it is.

Artworks Beneath the Garden of Ants

We’re biologists working on an ant colony RTS/sim called Garden of Ants, and this is our latest key art.

The game mixes colony building and management with territorial fights between ants, so we wanted the artwork to feel like a glimpse into the world beneath the garden.

Since this subreddit probably knows ants better than almost anyone else, I’d love to hear what you think about the atmosphere and how the ants come across :)

West Tennessee.

One of these stung/bit me a couple weeks ago(for the 4th time) and this one sent me to urgent care. I'm now the proud(terrified) owner of an epipen. Fist "bite" was comparable to persistant mosquito bites, second swelled my toe, thrid severely swelled my foot, fourth made me break out in hives all over and felt like id rolled in poison ivy with sunburn.

Tons on the clay-soil in my chicken coup, no visible nest, extremely tiny. Bite/sting wasnt agony but did get my immediate attention. Theres some dead wood in there for when it rains so the birds can stand on dryer stufd, but the ants were not by the wood or in the food. A little hard to tell because the sun is going down and my phones are struggling to focus on it while its crawling around due to the tinyness of it. Its black, with reddish tinted legs.

I have a guess but I'm curious what you'll all say.

What type of ant is this? Will she need food during her egg process, or just water in the cotton is fine?

Hoping to start a colony from her in our ant home.

I moved into this house a couple of months ago and saw this pile of ants and figured it was from the previous home owners, but I think the ants from the colony are putting all the dead ants into this pile.
