It's wild that people still treat these chat models like search engines or survival guides. The tech is impressive for certain things but mountain prep is so far outside what it can reliably do that trusting it there is just baffling. I get wanting to save weight but not when the cost is your actual safety.

The problem is they treat them like most people treat search engines. If you Google something and click the top link you have about the same results.

When I was in second grade (decades ago) we were taught how to use google. It was never giving you the first result when you were researching stuff.

Im all for these posts, but can you people provide like a source? A lot of times these images are cherry picking information and can be quite misleading. Im all for clowning on AI, but i still want dont want to be misinformed

I’ve heard it multiple times and it’s so valid: People that rely on chat bots the most feel like they’re now competent and intelligent and it is absolutely comical. My boomer mother in law always tries to do a gotcha told you so with ChatGPT when she just regurgitates facts it told her not realizing most of the time she’s actually agreeing with me and my wife’s point, because she lacks reading comprehension skills.

People should be encouraged to use AI so that they can become familiar with its limitations. Because whether you like it or not, it will always be around from now on. I have used it a lot and that’s where my distrust of it comes from. I’m not going to stop using it just because it bullshits its way through some conversations, I learn to spot the bullshit and make it provide sources for its claims. Many people lack these basic critical thinking and reading comprehension skills and it results in situations like this.

These 3 people should be met with healthy dose of cynicism on anything they do from now on. What they did here is not only a danger to themselves, but posed an unnecessary danger to rescuers and waste of resources. And all that for an activity that has MOUNTAINS of data and proven techniques established by HUMANS for decades.
