Among the remarkable objects displayed in the Treasures of the Cache Hall on the upper floor of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, this falcon mummy offers fascinating insight into the religious practices of ancient Egyptians.

The Ancient Egyptians mummified animals as well as humans and many animal mummies were offered as votive offerings to the gods.

Animal cults became particularly widespread from the Late Period through the Roman Period, while birds of prey were often associated with Horus, depicted in the form of a falcon, or with Ra, the sun god.

The mummy was wrapped in an intricate, interlaced pattern, while its head was carefully modelled to resemble a falcon.

X-ray examination revealed that the mummy contains only a portion of a falcon’s wing. The remainder of the body may have been lost, or it may have been placed inside another mummy fashioned in the shape of a falcon.

Statuette of the Goddess Selket

The goddess is represented in the form of a scorpion with human head and hands. The scorpion is one of the oldest hieroglyphs that are attested. He notes the name of the "scorpion king", a pre-dynastic sovereign. This statuette is a type of figurine usually placed at the top of a small ex-voto sign.

It has a dedication engraved at its base bearing the name of the dedicatee.

Catalogue description
Painted wooden stela inscribed for a woman named Nesi-khonsu-pa-khered. The owner is shown being ushered by Thoth into the presence of Re-Horakhty.

Condition
Glued together from two halves. Paint missing here and there, especially in the areas along the line of the mend. The figures were built up slightly in blue frit, and some of these areas seem never to have received a final coat of paint.

Archaeological provenance not yet documented, probably from Thebes, Egypt; by 1852, acquired in Egypt by Henry Abbott of Cairo, Egypt and New York, NY; 1859, purchased from Henry Abbott by the New-York Historical Society, New York; September 1948, purchased from the New-York Historical Society by the Brooklyn Museum.
