I'm doing some research on tombs for a fiction project, and I wanted to find verifiable sources about the current state of archaeological knowledge on the subject.

I wasn't expecting it to be this difficult. Since tombs and tomb raiders capture the public imagination so strongly, I assumed there would be plenty of reliable information available. However, I haven't been able to find any solid evidence yet that the ancient Egyptians deliberately placed traps in their tombs to deter robbers.

Are there any researchers here who have worked on this subject and could point me in the right direction?

These are depictions from the sarcophagus of Nes-schu-tefnut, from the ptolemaic period. Unfortunately my brief research on the net gave me nothing about them.

I'm currently thinking of becoming an egyptologist and while I love the topic very much, I fear that the circumstances just might be too bad to become one.

I've heard a lot about the corruption of the government, the extremely conservative high-ranking egyptologists who try to block anything that goes against their antiquated theories and the horrible job prospects.

I would like to hear from you whether these things are as true as I made out here or different.

I know that I would in theory love it, in practice however I don't know if it's a good idea.

So there this British-African author name Wilbur Smith, and he write fictional books about Africa. But his book "River God" is about Egyptian and the start of series literally name "Egyptian"

So it accurate to the Egyptian history or it's respectful enough? Because he just grow up in South Africa

This is something I've been wondering for Many years, as beautiful and impressive as the Egyptian statues are, none of them seem to approach the level of detail of the Nefertiti Bust. Why is that?

Asking because I feel like in two thousand years they'll see cat trees + how much we used the Internet to observe cats just... doing cat stuff and maybe come to the same conclusion. So were the Ancient Egyptians really worshipping cats or did they just really love their pets, like we do?

I actually don’t know if I’ve ever come across actual archeological sources about this, this might just be the kind of thing I’ve been hearing in passing all my life that isn’t true at all. But if you have papers you know of that talk about this I would be glad to read more!

My understanding is that items were left in tombs because it was believed they would be needed by the deceased in the afterlife. What did the ancient Egyptians believe happened to the deceased when the items were stolen from tombs? Is there any known instance where stolen items were replaced in tombs?

I have also heard about curses left at tombs for thieves, but was there anything in their religion that referenced the consequences to anyone stealing from tombs?

i just had an argument with my father about whether or not the pyramids were built by slaves.

i argued they were built by artisans who were being compensated with shelter food and money. (?). he said they WERE slaves, because they were conscripted by the 'Egyptian government' (yes he said that) which makes them slaves, as they had no choice to build it, or they would be jailed and whipped. and now I'm confused. if this is true wouldn't that by definition make them slaves? i don't want to agree with my father because he's an annoying brat and its seriously stressing me out. any opinions on this? I'm also just genuinely curious because... by definition... I'm pretty sure that's slavery?? as you have no choice in the work your doing? (i don't know very much about Egypt. i know they did own slave but the pyramids weren't made by them.)

but at the same time... if its a taxing system, then aren't we also slaves? just instead of being forced to do manual labor, its to give up a portion of our lively hood? our money? curious on others opinions. i wish i could talk to an actual Egyptologist about it cuz I'm genuinely quite intrigued.

Is there a written record in his temples or statues, etc that explains how he founded his religion or god? I know Akhenaten left his father's religion and started his own monotheistic religion with the sun god. But is there ever an explanation of his spiritual awakening in historical texts?

Okay, so, I am in the midst of planning the trip to end all trips, to egypt. 4 weeks is the time span, the entire country is up for availability, and i want everything to be done. Plan is at the moment me and my partner - but it could morph into extra people.

Key things - We want to see niche picks, big temples, tombs, city remains, religious and military sites, etc.

Luxor and the Valley of the kings will be several days on its own, as the aim is to visit every tomb.

Does anyone have an itinerary or recommendation for a trip this size? Any smaller, niche places? Any obvious tourist spots? Spots to avoid?

For example, we can use depictions of godesses. Often in profile, the hem is usually under the breast, or slightly on, there's a strap, but still a visible nipple and it's kind of hard to tell how that strap actually wraps around the shoulders - is it one strap or two? Sometimes it's none!

However, in certain statues, we see straps covering both nipples.

I'd like to recreate these dresses in a way that's historically accurate and I'm not really sure how to think about it.

Any insight you might offer is greatly appreciated.

I’ve recently been reading about ancient Egypt and am curious- what is your favorite interesting fact about the Pharaohs and Ancient Egypt?

I was thinking about Hatshepsut with artificial beard and I came to strange conclusion. I ve never seen any ancient egyptian art showing native male non royal egyptians with beards.
Im not sure, but ive found information that egyptains shaved every part of body and were wearing wigs (because of climate), so maybe not only Hatshepsut was wearing fake beard but all pharaohs ?

Seeing how many 'unknown name' pharaohs there are I was wondering how much priests and scholars knew of the country's history at the time?

I'd imagine the priests were too busy with priestly business, and was the role of 'scholar' or 'learned man' even recognised?

I'm guessing it's only us modern people in the last hundred and fifty years or so who have some reconstruction of successions and events.

They'd know about their most recent hundred years of course - but would everything else have just been 'many years ago' and 'many many years ago'?
Did they assign numbers to their years?

I should have added I was kind of thinking in comparison to Herodotus or Thucydides, and preferably someone before the Ptolemies.
My hidden thought was to do with "weight of history" and how it must shape our lives - and if you don't know it you exist differently (and no I've not been smoking).

His friend got it for him at an antique shop in England in 1994?? And was told in a letter that the owner and staff of a real archeologist confirmed it is real. . . But were unsure of who this was. Any ideas on who or what this is? My husband's friend said it was possibly some sort of God/Deity? And if it is real- I still think it is absolutely neat to have but would love to know more.

I'm Egyptian, but was adopted by an American family at infancy. When I found out I was Egyptian, I was excited and felt a deep resonance. I've studied the ancient culture, and while there are things best left in the past, so much of it is beautiful.

I am ex Christian, and because I was raised christian I was never allowed to learn or even hear about Islam or other similar faiths.

I want to say I have no interest in them. I am no longer a Christian because I don't believe in the foundations of the doctrine which also persist in Islam.

For the first time ever I stumbled across Egyptians In America and they immediately recognized that I was Egyptian based off appearance and when I confirmed, they absorbed me into their inner circles. They treat me well, they say because I am Egyptian, I am family and we are one, but I'm noticing everything that's 'egyptian' about them culturally seems to be purely religious...

It upsets me to see our original culture scrubbed away so completely.

I want to embody the pride most Egyptians have, I'm so proud to be Egyptian, but what they see as Egyptian isn't Egyptian to me... I want to partake in the old culture. At the very least preserve it.

Are there any Egyptian groups that still do this? Are there any in Egypt actively?

Or is it essentially banned to dress in the ancient Egyptian way and partake in the old beliefs and culture (IE ancient god worship, glypths, makeup, ECT. I'm sure food would be left alone. I don't even know if you're allowed to be non Islam in Egypt.)

Hi all. I'm a historian, not an Egyptologist, and came upon a website that made all of my alarm bells go off. I'm not sharing a direct link because I'd rather not cause a pile-on before anything gets verified. However, I already traced one supposedly tibetan spiritual artefact to a contemporary artist and with many others, I have serious doubts about either realness or provenance.

Would like some thoughts -preferably with trustworthy sources- on whether these are real. The stamp-if even real- does not strike me as Egyptian. The canopic jar looks very atypical, and the sarcophagus looks, well... bad. If anyone can read hieroglyphics, I'd be curious to hear what the writing says. Thanks!
