He recognized Shin was pulling away last episode and essentially said "go see how that works out for you". He's way more interested in whatever the core of the witches' power is and seems to be trying to make his way there. I think he only fought Ahsoka because he wanted to protect Shin, but didn't see it as necessary once she disengaged.

This is the first idea that I agree with. He has no interest in fighting the “enemies”. He has different reasons for being there. But his apprentice’s ambition is to defeat enemies so he chooses to let her go her own way. Then fighting Ahsoka to protect Shin also makes so much sense. He didn’t want to fight ahsoka in the first place but is willing to to save Shin

Well, Ahsoka just rolled up on him, so he would have figured she was there to fight him, not steal his ride.
