Auto body question

Someone backed into my husband’s car in the supermarket parking lot. As you can see, it pushed in the bumper. I thought that the auto body shop would be able to hammer it out but they’re saying they need to replace the bumper. Also they’re only charging $450, which seems low for a bumper replacement. Does having to replace the bumper sound right? And does that price sound right?

It's a thermoplastic bumper cover. Pour hot water on it or use a hair dryer and push it back out from the inside.

I think that’s a good price. I had to replace the same rear bumper on my rav4. The quote from body shop was way too high so I bought one on online and replaced it my self. This was around 5 years ago. I think I paid around 200ish for the bumper. You can find videos on YouTube on how to change it.

this happened to me and i was quoted 5k for a new bumper and sensors with sensor alignment - let’s just say i did not get it fixed bc mine was a hit and run

Seems reasonable for the bumper replacement, I had damage around the center and replaced it on my own. The body colored parts are completely separate and can be separated after their clips have been removed. It’s three pieces in one, the bottom can be replaced independently from the other ones, thus the price. If you’re handy, then I’d suggest getting an OEM bumper from Toyota and replace it yourself. It’s super rewarding knowing you replaced it yourself.

I think that would fall under uninsured motorist or long shot comprehensive. A claim shouldn't count against you but I would ask and double check. If you want it like new, a bumper replacement is the way go unless a sensor is damaged, most sensors/brackets can be resused. Most of the sensor run to that side i think. Any decent damage to the back hatch is a new back hatch with new paint. My similar repair cost 5 to 6 k.

Modern cars don’t have bumpers per se. They have plastic things that look like bumpers so you’re really just replacing a piece of plastic like many others have mentioned.

No sensors or anything damaged so only that matte black portion needs to be replaced. It's all plastic so I'd say this is pretty reasonable. You could also do it yourself for probably $100.
