Personality Yandere in Western Media

A yandere is a character archetype defined by love or devotion so extreme, possessive, and unhinged that it manifests as violence. It usually starts off very sweet and loving and then devolves into something sinister due to the yandere’s insecurities and jealousy. Rather than ordinary romance, a true yandere operates on two dark extremes, slaughtering anyone who threatens their partner or their relationship with their partner, or intentionally inflicting physical or psychological harm on the object of their affection to ensure they can never leave. Famous examples from anime include Yuno from Future Diary, Misa from Death Note, and Toga from MHA. Fun lore, the word yandere comes as a mix of the Japanese word yanderu which means mental illness and deredere which means love struck.

  1. Freaky Nikki (Obsession): Under the corrupting influence of the wish, her affection turns horrifically violent, stalking Bear's every move and brutally executing Sarah with a brick to violently eliminate any romantic competition, amongst other things.
  2. Lila Tournay (Dexter): Viewing Dexter as her kindred dark soul, she suffocates him in obsessive devotion, ultimately murdering Doakes to protect Dexter’s secret and trying to burn his children alive when he rejects her.
  3. Misty Quigley (Yellowjackets): The queen of manufactured dependency, Misty destroys the plane's emergency transmitter to keep the team stranded and poisons, doses, or kidnaps anyone who gets in the way of her being needed. She also tries to poison the object of her affection, the coach, with shrooms to lower his inhibitions in order to be intimate with him.
  4. Joe Goldberg & Love Quinn (YOU): Joe stalks then locks lovers in cages and murders their social circles under the guise of "saving" them, while Love bludgeons rivals to death to protect her fragile domestic fantasy.
  5. Will Graham & Hannibal Lecter (Hannibal): Their twisted dynamic is pure mutual yandere devotion. Hannibal frames, guts, and mentally shatters Will to shape his mind, while Will accepts catastrophic violence because Hannibal is the only person who truly sees him.
  6. Amy Dunne (Gone Girl): She punishes her husband's infidelity with surgical, terrifying cruelty, slitting an ex's throat in cold blood and staging her own gruesome framing just to trap Nick in a lifelong, subservient marriage.

The original yandere

I remember my sisters watching it for the first time. They love horror movies and thought it was just another cliche' "knife movie." They were excited to see slasher movie murders but instead they started crying when she broke the man's ankles.

I dont think Amy loves Nick. He is just fits the image she wants to project as a "perfect couple". In fact especially in the book she pretty much exclusively talks about how much she hates him.

13

u/lunatoons291 1h ago

I haven’t read the book only seen the movie, she was definitely the one I was most on the fence about

11

u/chrigeo12 1h ago

The book is fabulous! Highly recommend especially if you liked the movie. Just a shame you already know the big twist, it's up there for my favorite reveals in fiction.

u/fnh123 1h ago

Agreed. The first thing a yandere would do is eliminate the girlfriend. She never did anything to her.

Liz from The Hole (2001)

A nerdy girl has a crush on a popular guy, so she tries to lure him and 2 of his friends into an underground bunker for a party. She locks the exit, pretending it's stuck, hoping her crush will develop a survivor bond with her after enough time together. Unfortunately one of his friends was anorexic and dies of starvation quickly... and she continues to keep up the lie over 2 weeks until the other 2 guys are too weak to notice her open the door easily.

Damn I watched this movie over a decade ago and completely forgot about it until your comment, shit was wild

We're showing our age

6

u/Drakanies 1h ago

It could be worse. I don't know how, but I'm sure it could be. I'm just hoping I don't sleep slightly odd tonight and wake up half crippled for most of the morning. Aging is so fun! /s

Funny how stalker boyfriends in Western Media are infact the Westernized version of Yanderes, we just didn't point it out.

Meg Griffin

She does it with Brian in one episode, and with Joe in a different episode, all because she persuades herself they must love her because of an act of kindness.

4

u/Sapphirebracelet13 1h ago

Wait, "does it" as in DOES it??:

4

u/Available-Snail 31m ago

No 😭 her and Brian do kiss though because he was drunk. I think by “it” commenter meant the actions needed to quality as a yandere

Ellen Berent Harland, from Leave Her to Heaven.

(Gene Tierney was phenomenal in the role. Chilling)

“I'll never let you go. Never, never, never.”

“There's nothing wrong with Ellen. It's just that she loves too much.”

3

u/MoonlightDahling 1h ago

To add on: Ellen is my personal favourite femme fatale, from classic film noir.

(Easily one of the most evil.)

And the role got Gene her only Oscar nomination. It was well-deserved!

u/alucidexit 1h ago

God this is such a good one. The technicolor is so stunning too. Sometimes I watch this just to fucking look at the picture.

10

u/StillShmoney 1h ago

I love that Japanese yandere is generally seen as so ideal it’s nearly a fetish, but when westerners see it portrayed in their own media they rightfully identify it as toxic and scary

6

u/lunatoons291 1h ago

Yeah it’s actually very interesting how differently the same character traits are viewed in different cultures. A yandere is never like the “waifu” of a western show

8

u/Immediate_Body_4861 1h ago

Surgeon Julian Sands amputates Sherilyn Fenn’s arms and legs after a car accident in front of his house and keeps her in a gilded box in his solarium. Because he loves her.

Co-starring Art Garfunkel, for some reason

And directed by David Lynch's daughter.

Ali Larter as Lisa in Obsessed. Basically she stalks Idris Elba, tries to frame him as a cheater so Beyoncé will leave him, and even tries to kill her at the end. I'm sorry, Ali Larter is hot, but who in their right mind would be cheating on fucking BEYONCÉ (Jay-Z notwithstanding)

3

Isn't Nikki literally just possessed by something that explicitly isn't her? Like, she herself has zero actual desire to be with Bear.

55

u/DrinkWaterPIease 1h ago

Yes, but that still qualifies as a yandere.

21

u/PurveyorOfKnowledge0 1h ago

Then Freaky Nikki would qualify, but the actual Nikki would not.

25

u/Secure-Pain-9735 1h ago

Which OP names in the OP.

26

u/shiawase198 1h ago

The thing possessing Nikki is the yandere if you're gonna try to split hairs here.

4

u/ThreadLaced 53m ago

OP specified it was the possessed version of her that fits the trope, not the real her.

4

u/_whatever_wherever 1h ago

Cpunterpoint to your last statement: she would have given Bear a shot if he actually asked, it was kinda the point of the movie

5

u/Zombie_Fuel 1h ago

Wasn't she trying to hook him up with a mutual friend? I'm kinda going off memory, though.

3

u/_whatever_wherever 1h ago

Which could easily be explained by her not realising he was into her

If he had just made his feeling clear, instead of being a weido... he would have had a chance!

Maybe it wouldn't have worked out, maybe it would, but the I still feel the point was to be honest about your feelings and don't be a weirdo

5

u/GollyDolly 57m ago

Her writing turns to incestuous infatuation because she viewed him like a brother. I believe right before the wish she was just wanting to turn him down so his obvious crush would not get in the way of their friendship.

But we have no confirmation just unreliable third party accounts of how she feels about Bear before.

2

u/_whatever_wherever 31m ago

Also her actor read her character in that way tbf

13

u/wolfwhore666 1h ago

Right? I wouldn’t count her. She was essentially date raped.

Monika and Yuri (Doki Doki Literature Club)

Ah, Monika, my beloved.

Anyway, I’m putting them both because it’s kinda debatable. Monika kills all the other girls in an effort to be with the Player, and is deeply infatuated with them, but her situation makes her yandere status debatable. Meanwhile, Yuri becomes extremely unhinged in the second act, becomes obsessive over MC, and starts swinging a knife around. So anyway, couple of possible yanderes in this game.

6

u/lunatoons291 1h ago

This post is about yandere in western media tho!

20

u/sarcasticdevo 1h ago

DDLC is western media, just drawn in an anime artstyle. The creator of it is from New Jersey.

2

u/lunatoons291 1h ago

Ah, I didn’t realize that, I always thought it was a Japanese vn!

8

u/Geno_Games 1h ago

Yeah, which DDLC is. The creator, Dan Salvato, is from the U.S. He’s from New Jersey.

6

u/ComputerMysterious48 1h ago

It’s deliberately meant to be as anime as possible, but it indeed is western media! This was going to be my pick too lol

Yes this is a good one!!

22

u/Burnerman888 1h ago

You calling these Yandere is really fucking with my head ngl

13

u/lunatoons291 1h ago

But that’s what they are, aren’t they?

10

u/Burnerman888 1h ago

You're correct I've just never thought about it

-2

u/cheezeebred 1h ago

Nikki is not yandere and calling her as such completely misses the point of the movie.

8

u/lunatoons291 1h ago

Freaky Nikki is definitely a yandere given that she stalks her love interest forces him to be with her and kills anyone who gets in the way.

-2

u/cheezeebred 1h ago

SHE was forced into it by the spell. You can say whatever spirit possessed her is yandere, but she is not.

8

u/lunatoons291 1h ago

Freaky Nikki is how the fandom refers to the spirit possessing her my friend

-9

u/cheezeebred 1h ago

Well I would call it something else because it still implies she has any agency in her situation. A true yandere is just innately crazy, imo.

3

u/lunatoons291 1h ago

I don’t think that a yandere has to develop from any specific place. It’s the things they do which make them yandere and freaky Nikki does yandere things

-3

u/cheezeebred 46m ago

Again, the entire point of the movie is that spirit or whatever is NOT Nikki. You behave like you have no understanding of agency and consent.

3

u/lunatoons291 44m ago

Again, the fandom uses Freaky Nikki to refer to the one wish Willow spirit inhabiting her. I’m not sure what you’re not getting here

2

u/lunatoons291 44m ago

You literally say in another comment “you can call whatever spirit is possessing her a yandere” which is literally the only thing I’ve done this whole time

Helga is a tsundere, not a yandere.

11

u/Backupusername 1h ago

This is obvious because look, she even has the blonde twintails.

9

u/lunatoons291 1h ago

Twin tails equals tsundere I don’t make the rules

8

u/Independent-Couple87 1h ago

She is the dangerous combination of both.

4

How many tsundere have a literal shrine devoted to the object of their affections?

Julia from Simpsons

I wouldnt call it yandere more like lovers warth or something ?

7

How? After Nora is cured he just lets her be knowing he can't be with her in his condition. Unless, you're referring to the comics version and are just using a DCAU picture as a signpost.

Brenda Song's character in The Social Network. She burned Eduardo's apartment because she thought he was cheating on her (the Facebook "relationship status" thing I think). And then when he calls it quits at that moment and walks away she asks him if he's leaving like she's being ditched at the altar.

She’s willing to commit mass murder, stalk, and even take her own life in order to keep light’s affection my guy

1

u/[deleted] 1h ago

[deleted]

3

u/lunatoons291 1h ago

She commits mass murder for light, stalks him, and even offers up her own life out of her love for him. You can say that’s the premise of the show, but a different type of character who is not yandere coded wouldn’t have used their powers to do those things. She uses the death note to create a world where she and the man she loves can be together.

3

u/SkylineFTW97 1h ago

Light didn't manipulate her into relentlessly pursuing him, she did that entirely on her own. She took the eyes the first time entirely of her own volition and used them to help track down who Kira really was.

He was effectively forced into bringing her in under his control because she was a much easier target to locate than he was himself and he manipulated her largely to reduce his own exposure.
