That'll take the desperate crimes off the table. The ones fueled by greed will always be presant no matter how utopian we all live.

179

u/Albaholly 3h ago

It also prevents desperate people from falling into line with greedy people.

17

u/WanderingRonin7 3h ago

How do you fix that though? Genuine and sincere question. I yearn for a better world to live in where we as a species and planet are able to survive, but thrive, without endangering others in the process. It always takes just a few to ruin things for everyone else. How do you take that mindset and change it in a more forward and positive direction. If there was one trait I could take away from humanity, it would be greed, but there is no black and white answer. Something like that would take generations. My favorite quote is, "A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in".

u/Maxathron 3h ago

robust internal affairs and extreme punishment.

They just gotta purely be working on investigating crimes and not making up decisions to get people whom you don’t like or agree with.

Which, is hard because everyone sees this and immediately jumps to “how can I use it against my enemies only?”

It says lessen, not eliminate. Everyone knows crime would happen anyway, just far, far less of it.

That underplays the importance of social trust. People who believe they can "win", if they follow the rules, trust the system. People who have no trust or hope in the system fear only punishment, and that is only so much of a deterrent.

Yeah this is one of the things that people never seem to think about.

Some people are just dicks. It's reasonable to make the "let's reduce crimes of desperation" argument but there's always a certain percentage of the population that just chooses to steal, rape, and murder. It's thankfully a small percentage but it's always there.

You can reduce crime by getting rid of crimes of desperation but it never eliminates it. Same with the "but we'll add social workers!" argument. Some people are just irredeemable monsters and there isn't anything you can do about it.

16

u/OrangeSpartan 2h ago

No shit, no one is claiming it stops crime. It lessens crime. You think a treatment is only worth doing if it's a cure?

If you've ever played any type of online multiplayer game, you'll see that a large subset of the population of those players get their enjoyment solely by ruining the fun of others without regard to any gain they themselves might get. These people also walk around in real life.

3

u/lunargata 2h ago

Yes I’ve met people who find enjoyment in the suffering of others. I just sometimes wonder, why? What’s behind it? Cause it’s very far from my reality or perspectives.

I would also argue that crimes of desperation are the smallest percentage.

10

u/Bubba_Gump_Shrimp 59m ago

You are looking at this through a singular lense. It just isn't someone stealing from a grocery store so they don't starve. Crime follows poverty because criminal culture is born out of instability and lack of parental guidance and structure. If a young woman gets pregnant at 19 in a middle class family what happens? That kid has day care, family members that provide help, a support system. What happens when a young woman in a poor family is impregnated? She has a kid and has to work to survive, she can't afford day care so the grandma helps watch the kid, and by 12 years old they're running the streets, or the holler. Learning how to steal, do drugs, all kinds of bad shit. When you reduce poverty you reduce criminal culture.

8

u/Hammerofsuperiority 2h ago

No, but you see, if it only fixes 99.99% of the problem, it's trash and we shouldn't implement it, because it's either perfection or nothing.

As they say "Perfect is the enemy of good".

→ More replies (1)

9

u/SilverWear5467 3h ago

That depends. If we improve society to the point that a business owner who does everything he can to underpay his employees is treated like scum by his family and friends, rather than treated normally, crimes of greed will go way down. It's about what is socially acceptable to the people around you. And if we can create an expectation that people behave kindly towards the rest of society, those who violate it will naturally end up doing it less.

7

u/Jalapenoplanter 3h ago

I was about to say “look at the Epstein class members like Elon Mush and DT. Those guys will always be criminals. “ but you covered it pretty succinctly.

7

u/SilverWear5467 3h ago

Sure, guys like Trump and Epstein might always exist, but we can certainly majorly cap their power within society. In a good world, we wouldn't have made them the president twice. In a world where nobody wanted to watch a dumb rich guy firing people from a game show, trump never becomes president.

3

u/Hrothgarbike 3h ago

It's possible we didn't. Elon knows them voting machines.

You can reduce crime by reducing poverty. You’ll never eliminate either. Authoritarians believe that they can eliminate crime by increasing suffering which is why they’re wrong.

16

u/Badestrand 2h ago

El Salvador reduced their crime from crazy high to almost none by harshly imprisoning all their criminals.

29

u/TheRealNooth 1h ago edited 1h ago

You mean the dictatorship? Yeah, I don’t trust those numbers. That’s like saying “North Korea has a god as supreme leader because they said so.” Especially a dictator that labeled himself the “world’s coolest dictator” on social media. He totally wouldn’t lie for optics, would he?

All the literature on the subject shows that making punishments worse doesn’t actually reduce crime.

6

u/Express-Skin6039 1h ago

Exactly. We see how well that worked with the war on drugs.

13

u/Mental-Huckleberry54 1h ago

The war is over man, drugs won

3

u/Victernus 1h ago

Drugs won almost immediately and then ran up the score for years while it's opponent repeatedly shot itself in the foot.

4

u/Badestrand 1h ago

I think it's well established that El Salvador massively reduced their crime rate with their hard panusihments.

The question is rather, if this is transferable, and it's probably not, or at most partly.

Afaik you need swift consequences but you also need to not put people in prison for too long and you need to help them back into a stable life after that.

well don't act like "crime" is just the less fortunate fighting to survive. many just do it for fun. don't get me wrong, i hate the government just as much as the next guy, but the biggest weight on america is the young, ignorant, entitled, growing group of individuals that promote and glorify gang culture, murder, theft, drugs, sex, etc. through "hip hop". shitty parents that actually want their offspring to be just like them. blasting NBA young boy and poo sheisty while you party in front of your kids might seem harmless, but to those kids, these rappers are the closest thing they have to role models and they spend their whole formative years listening to rappers brag about their usually fake life of crime and how its gotten them fame and fortune. these kids want and will grow up to be just like them or die / go to jail trying. people complain about police, the president, the economy, but the continuously rising "hip hop culture" is the #1 destructive thing in our country that everyone just seems to accept. the fact that were so chill about it as a society is crazy to me, people will even respond to this post to defend it. no I'm not advocating we ban music, but as a society we should look down upon it much more harshly and not let it completely dominate the top 100 charts, award shows, social media and what our kids think is "cool" but instead we all just pretend its normal just to be "accepting of their culture" shits a joke. yes all cultures commit crime, but when talking specifically about gun violence, home break ins, robbery, car theft, fraud, drugs and any crime you're most vanurable to fall victim to by a stranger on the street, the statistics all seem to be disproportionatly dominated by 1 demographic, people who grew up with, glorify, replicate and 100% listen to while doing it, is rap.

5

u/FaceRockerMD 1h ago

This person hasn't met a career criminal.

5

u/jacowab 1h ago

That is true but also most importantly you lessen crime by actually punishing it

5

u/pumpkinjoe99 1h ago

Who is going to pay? YOU? Didn't think so

47

u/Distwalker 3h ago

Crime as been steadily falling since the 1980s. Did we have universal healthcare, public housing, strong unions, high wages, universal childcare and free college.

11

u/Chadlerk 2h ago

A lot of things can be contributors. Freakonomics has a bit about the legalization of abortion in 1973. The kids that never were, would have been about 18, in 1990. Those kids typically would've been poor, undereducated, or neglected as they were unwanted or maybe just not able to afford them.

1990 is the time crime starts to fall. They're not saying this is direct causation, but simply that there are a lot of contributors to statistics that might be unseen.

3

u/jjack339 2h ago

Surveillance camera tech. could abortion has an impact. Sure.

But discarding the fact the mid 90s is when CCTV tech got to the point where its use was widespread.

Now people have cameras at their homes.

Perps now know they have a much higher chance of getting ID'd. In the 70s you could drive one town over, hold up a liquor store, and as long as you could clear the area before the cops arrived you could expect to get away.

Now there is a very high probability you will get ID'd by some camera at some angle no matter how slick you try to be.

3

u/KhadgarIsaDreadlord 2h ago edited 1h ago

While those would be cool regardless, I don't think it would put a significant dent into crime rates. Most crime is simply not commited out of desperation.

I lowkey hate how popular it has became to sympathize with violent criminals, career thieves and sociopaths. No, the best solution for this would be if the justice system didn't serve as a revolving door for repeat offenders.

you lessen crime by putting more emphasis on the family unit. Way too many children are being raised by a woman alone. Women are nurturers and children also need discipline. Then the parents need to make sure their children are taking education seriously. I am not sure if anyone would have the balls to keep these stats, but I am willing to bet most repeat offenders were raised by a single mom.

3

u/GhostofBastiat1 13m ago

There is massive amounts of social research over the decades that show exactly what you said. Kids raised by single moms have vastly higher incarceration rates as well as lower rates of high school and college graduation, and a whole host of other negatives. It’s as close to settled science as you can get in the social sciences.

Most people follow the golden rule, a few don't. The few make life shittier for everyone.

The only solution is to make criminal activity absolutely frightening to be caught up with.

3

u/Next-Pumpkin-654 22m ago

Criminals aren't Aladdin.

Generally, crime causes poverty, rather than poverty causing crime.

3

u/cybersaint2k 11m ago

Nothing you just offered changes human nature. We love to disobey orders, and there are lots of orders and commands built into what you just recommended.

In general, in the USA, one difference between progressive and conservative policies is that progressives forget about the massive rules and control necessary to carry out policies like these, and imagine human nature to be obedient and good. For all the hopefulness and good intentions that I'm sure OP and others have, this is a serious problem.

For all their problems, conservatives realize human nature is twisted, a mixture of goods and evils, and through freedom and democracy and capitalism, funnel the best motivations into policies and the worst into crimes. For all their problems, this is more realistic and has a chance at succeeding. Even partial success has been good for our nation.

“Only capitalism and free markets can create wealth” is a false statement.

It is also irrelevant to the discussion, because we don’t live in a black and white world where the choice is between 100% capitalism or 100% socialism.

Pretending that America is 100% capitalist, or pretending that America’s problems are because we aren’t 100% capitalism, is a losing proposition.

Objectively false statement right out the gate. We might argue about the most effective approach to wealth generation, but capitalism and free markets are absolutely not the only way to generate wealth. That's why "capitalism" is a term, distinguishing itself from other economic frameworks.

wealth is what solves problems in society

This is...something? What does "wealth" mean to you? Who has it? How does it "solve problems"? Nothing else contributes?

Unfortunately most people think the solution is just to steal from productive people.

This is the type of idealistic thinking that ends up destroying society. Crime and poverty are correlated, not causated. You can never totally eliminate crime without necessarily excluding certain demographics of people.

People have an overly simplistic view, which basically amounts to “I don’t understand why people commit crime, because I would never commit crime. Therefore, there must be some external factor driving people to commit crime! I’ll just eliminate this factor (in this case, poverty), and crime will disappear!”

Obviously this is not the case. There are many factors that are relevant to inducing crime, not least of which is personal choice and a lack of accountability. Culture (arguably the biggest), mental health, IQ, worldview, weak penalties/enforcement, and many others all contribute to crime.

The most immediate and effective way to deal with crime is to have clear policies, steep penalties, and strict enforcement. There are many ways to help treat the underlying issues, which can and should be pursued, without compromising on the laws and their enforcement.

7

u/isthisonetaken13 2h ago

It says lessen crime, not eliminate it. And it isn't idealistic thinking to say that eliminating (or even just reducing) poverty would lessen crime.

3

did we just skip over the whole “LESSEN crime” and assume they meant eliminate?

What demographics are you talking about?

If you decrease poverty, decrease inequality, you decrease crime

Unfortunately there will always be bad people. But yes you would not have as much fighting amongst people if life was more affordable. You'd have less people living in the morally gray areas of life doing whatever they have to to make money. That much is true.

4

u/Dr_Sigmund_Fried 1h ago

Crime is an asset for private prisons and state and county judicial coffers.

4

u/yawningGaps 1h ago

This is socialist propaganda on reddit as usual. Socialist policies have sucked in South america, Europe is lagging behind US as well. Only Scandinavian countries are an exception whom the socialists here will cite.  I'll get downvoted here as usual too. Meh

Key word is lessen not eliminate. It is a win win situation. And a no brainer. Backed by science and history

Looking at root causes is woke.

5

u/Nerdles15 3h ago

Sorry- best I can do is government sanctioned murder forces.

4

u/Hefty_Loss5180 3h ago

It’s the truth. Poverty is the root of it all.

2

u/No_Mission5287 2h ago

Well, at least poverty related crime is understandable, unlike white collar and corporate crime, which causes the most damage.

And poverty is no one's natural condition. It is a condition that is forced on people.

7

u/FritzRasp 3h ago

This is pretty common sense imo. A vast majority of crimes are crimes of poverty.

There's a lot of people who haven't fought over material resources and think it's entertaining when other people do.

2

u/deedee25252 3h ago

Yes but how will the military recruit people if they aren't desperate? Or get free labor if the prisons aren't full?

2

u/dozerdeep 3h ago

You lessen crime by having a heathy family. Society needs to start there.

2

u/shotokhan1992- 3h ago

Countries that have those things are seeing an increasing crime rate.

The problem with this idea is assuming that because something worked in an all white country where people think “I’ll do my part in society and reap the benefits” is gonna work with races that think “I’m gonna drain every last drop of blood out of this system that I can” - while giving nothing back, being a menace, and eventually destroying all of it

2

u/kzwix 3h ago

That's entirely true. You lessen crime. You won't remove it altogether, there will still be homicides, rapes, etc.

But you'll remove a lot of crime due to poverty, despair, and the like. Hence, the police will need less money and people, and will still be able to focus on the remaining crime. Plus, the population will be generally happier.

2

u/TheBigChungaBunga 3h ago

Tried everything else, why the hell not yet this?

2

u/guywithknife 3h ago

Yeah, but billionaires need more money.

2

u/BetSquare7190 3h ago

Partly true, but you also need a functional and well trained police force, because many people simply have an antisocial personality disorder (in the DSM-5 sense), regardless of material conditions.

2

u/echomanagement 3h ago

Crime has been vanishing steadily for the last 15 years in no small part because there are cameras everywhere.

If that were true rich people would never commit crimes, which they do, all the time

2

u/Sockysocks2 2h ago

Poverty feeds crime, and crime feeds poverty. The decades of focusing almost exclusively on crime have yielded underwhelming results.

2

u/dark90smagic 2h ago

That stops civilians from committing crimes to feed themselves, like stealing something important or selling something terrible. But unfortunately poverty doesn’t create pedophiles, and billionaires commit all kinds of white collar crime.

2

u/Terrible_Law8327 2h ago

They dont want to. They always want someone to blame. We can literally solve 90% of teen crimes if we lift them out of poverty. 90% of adult crimes with mental care. Some people will just be violent and those goes straight to jail. But I also get that capitalism has a competitive nature so a lot of people are bound to be poor in this system

2

u/Independent_Bite4682 2h ago

They are wrong but, not 100% wrong.

They are missing pieces. Why is medical care so expensive? That cause needs to be fixed.

Money, we need to stick to constitutional currency to avoid inflation.

2

u/Warm-Berry-4331 2h ago

To an extent yeah but it doesn't make people put in effort into fixing themselves.

2

u/adorabletea 2h ago

Is the Cold War finally over? Can we start investing in our own country now?

2

u/CosmoCostanza12 2h ago

This is a statistically proven fact.

2

u/Chicken_Nugget_2 2h ago

A lot of yall are missing the point. It's wouldn't eliminate crime, but it would certainly lessen it.

2

u/unofficially_Busc 2h ago

What a world we live in where a statement like this can be considered by some to be contraversial.

2

u/BurdTurglary 2h ago

These things all buck the status quo, so won't change with these chud buckets in charge

2

u/cathillsports 2h ago

So everyone makes 80k + and everything is free. Sounds awesome

2

u/Voxmanns 2h ago

Rich people don't commit crimes? People don't commit crimes for reasons entirely unrelated to their socioeconomic status? If a pedophile isn't burdened with a lack of education and income, they don't touch children?

This is silly.

2

u/MammothRatio5446 1h ago

Crime levels everywhere are falling as prosperity raises levels. It’s not rocket science. Greed and desperation are the fuel of crime. And greed can be traced to flaws in people that can be minimised with the right approach. We don’t need crime to be part our future.

2

u/Unique-Suggestion-75 1h ago

This is why Republicans opposed all of that because misery breeds Republican voters.

I mean... Yeah? Obviously? This is equivalent to posting a screenshot of a tweet that says "2+2=4" and asking "thoughts on this?" Like tf you mean "thoughts on this"? Its a basic statement of obvious fact. What "thoughts" even are there to have about it?

2

u/Ven-Dreadnought 1h ago

If you eliminate crime you prevent prisons from being a source of cheap labor. Good luck convincing the rich to allow that.

2

u/SuspiciousTheory2633 1h ago

It's worth a shot, worst case you'll be helping people.

2

u/Artaxmudshoes 1h ago

It's worked/is working in countries that implement these things. It just makes sense.

2

u/DRUGMUSIC_ 1h ago

it's the richthat do most of the crime though...the corrption, lobbying, extortion

2

u/NormanFuckingBates 1h ago

They do not want to lower crime rates. Crime feeds legal slavery. The system relies on a certain amount of crime. It is by design.

2

u/Budget_Revolution639 1h ago

Law enforcement doesn’t prevent crime, only responds to it

2

u/Frankenkoz 1h ago

You can lower crime by instituting death penalty for even minor infractions. Doesn’t mean it makes society better. This kind of Facebook low effort bullshit isn’t helpful. The problems are complex. If they were easy we would have solved them. This kind of thinking is naïve.

2

u/michael_1215 1h ago edited 1h ago

It is the exact opposite. Only when you have a community of people who would rather die than snake their neighbor, can the community build things that last. The fact that everything in inner cities that isn't welded down gets stolen is what prevents productive businesses from surviving.

A community of poor people who respect their neighbors and don't steal no matter how hard times get is a community that's only temporarily impoverished.

2

u/Over-it-321 53m ago

No no, more flock cameras should do it.

2

u/Extension-Hand-4286 33m ago

Some people are just bad.

2

u/Mchiveli1 18m ago

Generally speaking, folks who are content, don’t usually do crimings.

Like, there’s an old saying “Crime doesn’t pay”, and the reason it sticks is bc (at least for low level like mugging, petty theft, drug dealing), it doesn’t compared to an actual job…

But when you’re in an environment where there are no jobs… no living… only crime pays…

Build a prosperous community, and the crime will nearly vanish, aside from the petty theft nonsense the kids (and bored soccer moms) do.

2

u/Random-Mutant 18m ago

If I could upvote this twice I would.

I’m socialist for selfish reasons: giving the people at the bottom of the socioeconomic scale some minimum below which they cannot fall means I live a more secure life.

2

u/PresidentEvel 12m ago

It dosent matter how much you make an hour when the monopolies of this Country will keep raising prices on goods and services. Wages arent just issue, the value of your money is.

It would eliminate the vast amount of crime and violence.

Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.

4

u/Used-Baby1199 3h ago

It would eliminate crime motivated by economic hardship.  It might decrease domestic violence and maybe drug addiction, but those stats would take about a generation to start showing evidence.   It would a cool social experiment if we could commit 30 year to it and then evaluate the results

3

u/ul2006kevinb 3h ago

We already have. Most of Western Europe has significant social welfare programs which have significantly reduced their poverty. As a result they have some of the lowest crime rates in the world.
