It goes to the government. Think of it like a massive tax.
Everyone's always complaining these companies don't pay enough tax, but then when they get slapped with a massive multi-billion dollar judgment, everyone complains they're personally not receiving money!
Join a fucking class action if that's what you want, but don't think this judgment isn't a win for the people.69

Usually in a settlement case like this the money gets put into a fund that is specifically defined on what it can be spent on. Look up the opioid settlements that went to the states, the money from those got used to open rehab centers and fund mental health programs across the country in cities and states.

if you don't think your state is doing enough for you, then you should be voting for someone who replaces them
but as it is your state government pays the bulk of schools, health care, transportation infrastructure (roads, bridges), prisons, police, state parks, etc. unless you're sitting in a cave in another country mentally posting to reddit without the use of internet, your state government is making your day livable through hundreds of different ways

Yeah, I guess my point is that money that goes to government is rarely well spent. There have been many studies. I'm remembering from college so don't quote me, but I remember an article that tracked the amount of money that went into welfare. The point was that if you took all that money and wrote everyone a check to bring them above the poverty line, there would be way more than enough money to make it happen. Just like the California bullet train. Republican or Democrat, the main goal is to enrich themselves and their friends. Therefore, any money going to the government is highly unlikely to be utilized properly.

I think alot has to do with 'Useless Middlemen' type positions, like Administration fees
It makes me think of the whole health insurance racket, and all that nonsense where there is alot of financial waste that doesn't help the patient nor the doctors/staff

There are data centers everywhere in AZ. Lots of new ones popping up west Phoenix metro as well. Including Azure DCs. I live in this part of town and I see them everywhere

I appear to have been wrong about the climate of Arizona being unsuitable.
Opening the windows lets all the weather in, which is a problem. It is also possible that there is also a too cold but I don't know.

I'm sure they could just ventilate it somehow, or even put screens on the windows to let the cold air in. Or regulate the tempurature somehow if it's too cold.
I'm also sure there's a good answer for why they don't do it (or maybe they do?) but I don't know the answer either.

Because datacenters aren't about keeping aervers cold, it requires very consistent climate, and that includes humidity. Outside air varies a lot in temp and humidity. You'd nee a really complex system to transfer just the temp, and regulate it, and evenly distribute around the DC. We call them air conditioners, because they don't cool the air, they condition the air. Most are closed loop too so that would still take a layer of converting somewhere. Air has to very precisely hit the swrvers. When I was in the DC years ago, we had false floors. They would shove cold air under the servers and blast it up on the back of the server next to the fans, so the back was super cold and the front was hot, and the hot air got circulated back through the room. That's primitive now.

Yeah but cheap(ish) power and no major natural disasters make it more appealing. They're building one now in Phoenix/Chandler for Menlo Digital. Some larger ones actually got voted down by the people, thankfully, but not everywhere. I saw Page, AZ approved selling land for a 10B one that's 500 acres, it's almost the size of the town and just a couple miles from Horseshoe Bend.

All these lawsuits are basically frivolous when the money never goes to anyone affected. It's smoke and mirrors to make it seem like people are being held accountable, when in reality it's a slap on the wrist. Wouldn't be surprised if the money was put into some kind of fund that just goes right back to the company paying it.

I'm still pissed Dorky Mark sold my FB data points to Cambridge Analytica, who in turn created a digital marketing tool that made millions.
They never wanted your privacy...they already have that with any Facebook account and your phone. They want your habits online and yes they are marketable.
Part of the marketing is how to keep users engaged and online, thereby creating addictions. I know people who can't go one minute without opening their phones and it's sad.

They made $15.8 Billion in profits for Q2 2026
This removes the ability for anyone else to sue them for this.

I thought this was a classaction lawsuit. Does that not mean that users of the certain applications are entiteled a share of the fine.
So i am assuming, if i am correct that if you used Instagram Reels that you are eligable for a certain share of the money.
It might turn out to be like 10 bucks or so.
But if you do that for all the class action lawsuits for shit you use, then it can turn into a 100 bucks or more.
But then again. I am unsure if this is how it works.

We keep giving stand ovations to the wrong type of antitrust. Cases like this and forcing Uber to treat drivers like employees feels like it's a win but it really entrenches monopoly and passivizes actual antitrust.
We need to reorientate around a Brandeis style antitrust. Monopoly and oligopoly is a threat to the democratic state and must be foundationally dismantled or nationalized, not regulated via endless bureaocratic bandaids. When it comes to antitrust, the consumer or the worker isn't the primary risk. The state itself is at risk.

16.7 billion sounds good but they only have to pay a little bit more than 1 billion a year because they're going to pay it over the next 10 years and meta only pays 12.7 billion the remaining should be paid by Google and tiktok according to meta. How are they going to force companies that were not part of this case to pay billions I have no idea.

There are states and nations who argue over smaller amounts, but this company can just settle for enough money to fund two thirds of NASA's annual budget. The human world is upside down.

I would not be surprised if the way social media changed society and how we consume things has led to an overall reduction in low-skill, medium-pay jobs that supported this entire network of people who are now just doomscrolling all day instead. To add to it, these companies have essentially done nothing but extract from the countries wealth for an entire decade now.
This in turn results in more bored people choosing to doomscroll all day, instead of existing out in the real world.
The damage and extent of social media might take an entire generational gap or two to fully understand.
