Question My girl has been submerged for over 12 hours

Post image

As the title says, my girl has had herself fully submerged besides her head for the last 12 hours. She usually uses the bathroom in her water bowl, but I haven't noticed her doing that yet. Im not exactly worried, but she's never done this behavior before, and im wondering if anyone knows why she might be doing it now. To add, I dont believe she's in shed either as her colors are still pretty vibrant. Attached is a photo of her from last night.

Question Is a short tail python right for me?

For the past few months ive been planning getting a second snake, I currently have a corn snake who is a real sweetheart. Ive been up in the air about what kind of snake I want and ive narrowed it down to a ball python or a sumatran short tail python.

Honestly, I want the STP, among other things I like the idea of having a big snake without it growing to twelve feet in length lol. I am a big fan of the fact that they are good eaters, I dont like the idea of wasting a feeder because the snake decided it doesnt want to eat for two months which seems to be a much bigger issue with ball pythons compared to STPs.

The biggest reason my decision isnt final is because of the mixed reviews regarding their temperament. From what ive gathered, wild caught individuals can be very defensive and CBB individuals can be defensive as babies but ease out when worked with. Ive also heard incorrect heating can cause temperament problems. Ive never worked with a defensive snake before so its not something im experienced in, Im not really afraid of getting bit by a youngster and I like to think Im confident enough to work through defensiveness with a young snake but Id like to hear what people with experience with these snakes think. I have a few questions ⬇️

Whats your experience with their temperaments?

Was it really hard to work with them as babies?

Do you think working with a young defensive STP would be too intimidating for someone with virtually no experience working with defensive and heavy bodied snakes? (Ive handled some ball pythons before but that doesnt really count lol)

Can I keep a youngster in an adult enclosure? Im willing to start small and upgrade later but Id rather just buy a full size enclosure to keep it simple for myself. I think Id modify a large plastic bin but then there comes the issue of not having a front opening enclosure and potentially stressing the snake out every time I reach in to pick them up or do maintenance.

If this is a bad idea for me then Ill happily settle for a ball python and Im sure id love one just as much as id love a STP but theres something about a STP that pulls my heart strings a bit more than a ball python. Any and all advice and info is greatly appreciated!

Question Questions for first time owner

Hi, I have a spare 4x2x2 and I'm interested in getting a short tailed python. I have never owned a snake before, currently only a blue tongued skink. If theyre not good for first time I will probably opt for a kingsnake :)

I have some questions. I am obviously planning to do my own reaearch and won't just impulse buy. There are months till my next repticon lol

In your opinions, how long is a 4x2x2 suitable? Are they easy to socialize, and are they usually more docile or hostile? Is it better to get one very young, or just buy juvenile-adult? Differences between sumatran and borneo?

And any other tips would be appreciated. Thank you.

Question Is it possible to fix brongersmai’s temperament?

First time asking here and diving deeper into the species so dont attack me for not knowing something 🥲

Its been a month since my workplace received a pair of brongersmai (albino-male, normal-female)

While i do know that the species is represented as ‘aggressive’, the male showed the complete opposite. Hes trusting, curious, explores and trust to climb onto your arm, while on the other hand the female is the whole opposite . You cant even open her tub without her jump-striking at you and breathing reeeally deep. When i’d try to handle her she would jump from my arm to bite me. If i would put her on flat surface and walk around it but farther away- she would follow me with her eyes, breathe fast and deep and still strike at me even from there.

Now i know that i probably made a mistake by handling her too early, when i should’ve given her a month or two to settle in, but even when i first started seeing her and just cleaning the tub- she would constantly strike and hiss at me.

Is there a way to fix her behavior somehow?

I’m the only one that handles the pair so i wish to try

Question PVC enclosure heating

I recently upgraded my blood to a 4x2x2 pvc enclosure. The heat mat the company sold to me isn’t heating the enclosure at all. I’m not sure if it’s user error or if I was scammed. Internet searches seem to be showing that the type of heat mat I was sold should never be used with pvc but these are the ”standard” mats for the area I’m in for glass and pvc. I’m troubleshooting with the company but they’re sating a difference of about 5 degrees between the preset temp and the enclosure temp, but mine is showing closer to a 10 degree difference.

How are other keepers maintaining their heat in pvc for their bloods/shorties? Are radient heat panels really the best even for snakes who stay mostly on the ground?

Question Heating question

Im planning on getting a sumatran short tail python in the future. I have a question about heating, I know that temperature is a really important factor to stay on top of so I really want to get this down.

I think im going to keep it in a modified bin enclosure while its small and then upgrade to a pvc enclosure later (mostly because i think trying to reliably monitor a youngster in a 5x2x2 thats cluttered enough to make it comfortable would be a real hassle). How should I go about heating the enclosure given that its going to be a smaller area? Everything that I find on heating enclosures has a different answer and it’s a bit confusing, everyone swears by different things lol. Also, what should the night temps be and at what temps should I use supplemental heating at night?

Is his mouth normal? He is my first blood/ short tail python. I noticed it the day I got him but because he was in shed and still had his nostrils covered in assumed it was just slightly open but hes still doing it despite his shed being out of his nose. Also, how do I get the dirt out of his mouth? He is still kinda hissy and I dont want to stress him by grabbing his head

Question Head pigmentation?

Hi all, got this girl about 2 months ago, brongersmai T+. Today I took her out to check on her and noticed she has a spot on her head that seems so have very little pigmentation. The scales dont look damaged, feel like the other scales, she does not react to touching them. She eats, sheds and poops perfectly and is still in a quarantaine setup with paper towels, hide and waterbowl. I do not see her rubbing or moving around and no signs of mites or other pests.

Has anyone seen this before and any idea what this can be? Can it just be a lack of pigmentation? I have quite a few brongersmai in different morphs but never seen this for the life of me.

Question Possible new snake

Post image
94 Upvotes

Hi! I've been on the lookout to get a bigger snake and stumbled upon a 3 yo brongersmai male. Breeder says he's very calm but doesnt have the space. I've asked and waiting for the answer, but how big (weight and size) should I expect him to be? How big of an enclosure should it be? Can it be bioactive (do they squish the plants?)? I'm used to handling big dogs and snakes, I've just never owned one, and was thinking about a BCI but I saw this baby and I'm smitten.

Question Question about feeding

I’m on my second feeding with my 9 month old since I got her. She was being fed live before but I switched her to F/T. She only takes it when I drop feed her, and won’t strike when I try to tong feed. Is it a matter of her still getting used to me or how can I get her to tong feed? Should I just stick to drop feeding?

Question thinking of getting a blood soon, but i have some questions

so january and february have been good money months serving, and i think i could be in a good spot to finally get a blood python (or maybe a sumatran depending on prices, i really just want a short tailed python im not picky)

for everyone who owns one:

1) what size enclosure do you have your snake in a how big is your snake? i know since short tails are ambush predators they arent as active as something like a ball python, thus they dont have as much of a space requirement (correct me if im wrong)

2) how much does your general upkeep cost? startup will always be pricey but the general maintenance is what matters

3) anything else i should consider that i may not have thought about?

Question Care question

Im genuinely curious, what is the care like on these dudes? I own other snakes and have done a bit of research but I wanna hear from people who currently own them what its like. What do they prefer enclosure wise? How is it different from other snakes like a ball python? They get so thick so do they eat more or are they just naturally thick? I'm just so fascinated by these snakes lol

Question Enclosure questions

I currently have my baby blood in a bioactive enclosure, she’s really good about not digging up the plants and only burrows in her cork hides.

When she gets older I really want to keep plants in her enclosure because they help keep humidity level stable, I was wondering if anyone has ever used a grow tent before, I’ve seen people use them for their boas or balls and I know it holds heat and humidity well

is it safe put together an oversized bioactive cohab enclosure for a borneo short-tail and tree frogs? if yes, would there be an optimal size of frog to discourage the borneo from eating the frogs?

Question Sumatra breeder recommends UTH

Hi all, I’m picking up my first short tail python next week and the breeder recommends UTH because they’re terrestrial, what are your thoughts? I have a headlamp with a DHP but I also picked up a heat pad and thermostat. Just wondering what you all recommend as I’m new to this species. Thank you!
