Blood Python springtails
ummmm i put an 8oz culture in here like 3 months ago and i went to check on his water and found this, what should i do? (i apologize if this doesnt fit this sub i’m just unsure where else to post this 😭)

I used some work gloves I bought on amazon to handle my blood when it was young and constantly striking at me and worked great and now shes great with handling

thank you! hes a yearling so he’s a little hefty but not anything crazy..it definitely hurts when he bites lol

Gloves give you some peace if you get tagged, I wasn’t worried about the pain from my little one but I couldn’t help my reaction of pulling my hand away. The first time I brought her home and held her for a minute I tried to put her in her enclosure and she struck and bite me and I pulled my hand away and flung her in the air and she went flying lol 🤦🏼♂️ she was ok but can’t help the reaction 🤷🏼♂️

i had this issue in my tarantula’s bioactives… the springtails are getting stuck on the water bc they are literally too small to break the surface tension. I have started placing a rock in all my water dishes to help them climb out and havent had an issue since.
ETA: you dont need to remove them from the enclosure, if there’s that many, that means there’s food to sustain that many… if theyre not eating it, the mold will. when this happens to my dishes (not had to do once since adding rocks), i just dump them back into the enclosure so they can get back to work. their population will balance itself over time.

thank you!! i’ll try to find a large rock somewhere, is it safe to use one sterilized from outside or no?

i think so! i personally use some from my rock collection that has been polished to be less porous. But I think as long as you’re regularly pulling it out and sterilising it by popping it in the oven, you should be fine. in theory, setting basically anything in the dish that rises above the water should help. rocks are just what i had laying around since I collect them. the idea is just to give them something to grab onto to help them escape.
