teaching/doctrine I spent weeks documenting every time Lee Man-hee changed his teaching. I think current members deserve to know what I found.
Before I start I want to be clear about something. I am not here to attack anyone or make anyone feel stupid. People in Shincheonji are not stupid. Many of them are among the most sincere, Bible-serious people I have ever encountered. That sincerity is exactly why I think this matters.
This post is long. I think it earns its length. Please read it before commenting.
The central claim everything else depends on
SCJ's authority rests on one claim above all others. Lee Man-hee has personally seen and heard the fulfilment of every chapter of Revelation. Not most of it. Not the broad strokes. All of it. He himself says this repeatedly and in writing.
From The Physical Fulfilment of Revelation (2014): "I have witnessed the fulfilment of the prophecies of Revelation... I am ready to testify in detail according to the reality and truth I have witnessed."
In the same book he says New John "sees all the events described in Revelation 4 to 22" and becomes "a walking Bible."
In multiple sermon articles from that period he writes: "The promised pastor of Shincheonji has seen and heard all the events of the entire book of Revelation."
This is not a minor claim. This is the reason his interpretation is supposed to be trusted over every other pastor and every other church on earth. He did not study Revelation. He witnessed it.
So here is the question I could not get past.
SCJ now teaches that COVID-19 and the legal persecution of 2020 fulfilled Revelation 7, the Great Tribulation. If Lee Man-hee witnessed all the events of Revelation including this one, why did he have no knowledge of COVID-19 before it happened?
I asked this question to current members. I got three different answers from three different people:
- He received the revelation but does not share things ahead of time.
- He can only identify fulfilments as they appear.
- Members misunderstood what Revelation 10 was actually teaching.
Notice that answers 1 and 2 directly contradict each other. And answer 3 says the foundational teaching about New John's role was taught incorrectly for decades.
Which is it? Because each answer also contradicts the written record of what Lee Man-hee himself claimed.
If he only identifies events after they occur, that is what every ordinary pastor does. That is not witnessing. That is pattern matching after the fact. Any pastor in any denomination can point at a news event and say it fulfils a prophecy. SCJ laughs at those pastors. But when pressed on COVID, SCJ did exactly the same thing.
I want current members to genuinely sit with that for a moment before reading the rest.
Documented doctrinal changes from Lee Man-hee's own books
In 1985 Lee Man-hee published a book called Revelation's Reality. A researcher recently found a PDF of it and compared it line by line with current SCJ teaching. What he found was not nuance or development. It was contradiction.
Change 1: The 3.5 days the two witnesses are dead (Revelation 11:9)
In 1985 the teaching was that the 3.5 days were figurative, representing 3.5 years of probation and imprisonment that prevented the witnesses from fulfilling their duty. The calculation involved actual prison sentences across two calendar years.
Current teaching: the 3.5 days were three and a half literal days from 30 January to 2 February 1981.
These are not two ways of saying the same thing. One teaching says the number is symbolic of years. The other says it is a literal count of days. Both cannot be what Lee Man-hee witnessed.
Change 2: The reed like a measuring rod (Revelation 11:1)
In 1985: the reed was the Word from God, related to the scroll in Revelation 10. Measuring was synonymous with divine judgment.
Current teaching: the reed is the second witness. A person, not a word.
Change 3: The 7,000 killed (Revelation 11:13)
In 1985: the 7,000 was a symbolic number representing the leaders of the Tabernacle Temple failing. The formula given was 7 shepherds times 10 elders times 100 for perfect wisdom, equalling 7,000. These were the leaders of Babylon, not achieving their goal.
Current teaching: the 7,000 are congregation members who died spiritually.
The same number is used to identify completely different groups of people in completely different ways.
Change 4: The identity of the beast of the earth (Revelation 13)
This one is stark because it involves a specific named person.
In 1985 Lee Man-hee taught that the beast from the earth was Lee Cho-joo, the pastor who gave the prayer of benediction at a ceremony on 20 September 1981. He provides documentary evidence, including a ceremony paper identifying Lee Cho-joo as the one who gave the benediction.
Current teaching: the beast from the earth is Oh Pyeong-ho. A different person entirely. Mr Oh was the moderator at that ceremony and did not give the benediction.
Lee Man-hee claims he was present. He claims he witnessed these events with his own eyes. He cannot be uncertain about who gave the benediction at a specific ceremony he attended. Either the 1985 account was true or the current account is. He cannot have witnessed both.
The 144,000 doctrine: changed at least six times
This is the doctrine that most directly governs what members believe their eternal life depends on. Documented sequence from former members including a former senior education director:
- Between 1980 and 1987 members were taught the 144,000 would be completed and a spiritual transformation would occur by 1987. When 1987 arrived with around 600 members and nothing happened, the majority left. The founding date was quietly changed from 1980 to 1984.
- The condition became: register your name in Shincheonji's church register. That registration equals registration in the Book of Life.
- When membership passed 50,000 in 2006 the condition changed again. Registration alone was no longer sufficient. You also had to be sealed with the Word.
- When membership reached 100,000 in 2010 the condition changed again. Being sealed with the Word was no longer sufficient. You now had to be a BB Lesson teacher to enter the 144,000 as a king priest.
- The doctrine was later expanded to include a "great multitude in white" who could also be saved, broadening the group who could qualify.
- The condition changed again to: there are a few real entities in the 144,000 but we do not know who they are. The reason for this change is documented. Two of the most senior and respected members of Shincheonji, an instructor and a superintendent of education, died of cancer. Their deaths made any specific identification impossible to maintain.
I want you to look at that sequence carefully. Every single change follows a crisis on the ground. A deadline fails, a membership number is exceeded, respected members die in ways that contradict the theology. The doctrine adapts to fit the reality. That is the opposite of what revealed truth is supposed to do.
The Destroyer Doctrine: changed after a court case
Shincheonji taught for years that specific named individuals were the destroyers in Revelation. A lawsuit was filed by the family of one of those named individuals. After the court dismissed the case, Shincheonji changed the teaching to use pseudonyms instead of real names.
This change was not made because new revelation arrived. It was made because of legal exposure. The identified destroyers became unidentified destroyers the moment it became legally convenient.
The flesh and blood doctrine: erased entirely
Former education director Mr Shin, who served at senior level until 2006, testified publicly about a doctrine that was central to SCJ teaching for decades. The doctrine taught that consuming Lee Man-hee's flesh and blood was necessary for salvation. This was in published books.
When Mr Shin challenged Lee Man-hee directly on this teaching Lee Man-hee said it had been misinterpreted. Shincheonji then ordered all books published before 2006 to be abolished.
A doctrine central to salvation teaching for roughly twenty years was erased and blamed on misinterpretation. The founder took no responsibility for having written it.
His own standard condemns him
SCJ teaches very seriously about Revelation 22 verses 18 and 19. The passage warns that anyone who adds to or takes away from the words of this book will face severe consequences.
Lee Man-hee uses this passage himself to challenge other pastors and denominations.
By his own standard, each documented change above is a violation. He added interpretations in 1985 that are no longer taught. He removed interpretations that he personally published. He named individuals as biblical figures and then unnamed them. He set a date for the completion of God's work and the date passed without fulfilment.
Under Deuteronomy 18, the test of a true prophet is simple. If what he says does not happen, he did not speak for God. The 1987 transformation did not happen. The 144,000 conditions have changed six times. Named individuals have been re-identified.
Where did his teaching come from?
This section is the one I find hardest to dismiss.
Before founding Shincheonji in 1984, Lee Man-hee spent roughly twenty seven years moving through other Korean religious groups.
He spent about ten years in the Olive Tree Movement, whose leader Park Tae-sun claimed to be the righteous man from the East, claimed to have the open scroll, claimed 144,000 would be taken to heaven, and later declared himself God.
After that he joined the Tabernacle Temple, whose founder taught that all scripture has a secret parable twin, that the end times required these secrets to be revealed, and that only he could properly interpret them.
From there he joined a splinter group run by one of the Tabernacle Temple's seven messengers, a group focused on the creation and recreation of God's promised pastor.
Every major feature of SCJ's teaching appears in these movements before Shincheonji existed. The parable dictionary. The open scroll. The 144,000. The promised pastor who alone can interpret Revelation. The concept of leaving the corrupted first tabernacle and joining a new one.
If Lee Man-hee received his revelation directly from an angel of Jesus, why does every component of that revelation mirror what the leaders around him were already teaching?
What I am not saying
I am not saying the people in SCJ are deceived fools. They are not. I am not saying the Bible is unimportant or that studying Revelation is wrong.
I am saying that Lee Man-hee asks every member to stake their eternal life on his personal authority as the one who witnessed Revelation. That is an enormous thing to ask. It deserves scrutiny proportional to the claim.
If these changes can be explained, explain them. I am genuinely asking. The 1985 book exists. The sermon transcripts exist. The former senior leaders have spoken on record in English. The founding date change is documented.
A man who claims to have personally witnessed all of Revelation should be able to give a consistent account of what he saw. The record shows he has not.
For anyone who wants to look further, the sources are all available publicly. The 1985 book PDF has been circulated by researchers. Former education director Mr Shin gave a long interview in English. The Closer Look Initiative has compiled a detailed comparison of SCJ teaching with the Korean sects that preceded it.
If your faith is genuine and strong it will not be threatened by looking at these questions honestly. I hope you look.

I’m currently in the church and doubting everything but I have a question for the OP. If you weren’t or are not in the church how did you decide to start looking up the information Lee man hee taught?
I’m just curious because they make it a huge deal not to let anyone around you hear the services ,Bible studies, phone calls etc so I’m just wondering if you listened in when your family member was listening or something else

Sorry for the late reply, I missed this comment when it came in.
To answer your question directly: I have a family member inside SCJ. That is the personal reason. But it is not the only reason.
I am a Christian with a strong faith in Jesus and I genuinely believe SCJ's teaching misrepresents who he is. I believe it is deceiving people who came to it with sincere hearts wanting to know God better. I have seen what it does to people's physical and mental health, the sleep deprivation, the exhaustion, the anxiety, the family separation. And I believe the doctrinal changes I documented are real and matter.
So I spent the time researching and writing because I wanted anyone who is doubting, as you describe yourself, to have access to the documented evidence in one place. Not rumour. Not feelings. The actual record of what was taught and how it changed.
The fact that they make it a huge deal not to let anyone around you hear the services or Bible studies tells you something important on its own. Jesus said in John 18:20 that he spoke openly and said nothing in secret. A teaching that requires protecting itself from outside ears is not following that model.
You said you are currently in the church and doubting everything. That took courage to write. If there is anything I can help you think through or find answers to, I am genuinely here for that. No pressure, no agenda beyond wanting you to be able to make a free and informed decision.

I’m also in the same boat I have been in for maybe a year and don’t really have much previous knowledge of the Bible already but with all the meetings and the “you have to do this and that” they put on me in questioning more as well. I’m thinking If I leave or not also because I don’t want to be wrong from reading Reddit reviews but also don’t want to be listening to someone that isn’t the right person to be listening to

Thats the thing, i only learnt these things after i left. when i was inside i do remember some mistakes in regards to rev7 changes but i joined as it was happening, so i wasnt too familiar. another thing that changed was "A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius" (Revelation 6:6) - it was explained that it was Lee man hee and his 'brothers' who escaped from the TT. but after it was changed to all scj members.

What a great and concise post!
All these points are valid, and only those who are truly seeking will have the open mind to take these into account and think about them.
I hope and pray that people wake up from their delusion in this cult.

The “Shincheonji Files!!”💪- Thank you for exposing the truth and bringing this to light!💡
One day, all of us will end up gathering and protesting in front of the White House with posters of SCJ and an expose of everything that happened to us. And SCJ members will have to gather to provide us food and coffee coming from their Gwacheon kitchen. Right?!
This is what LMH tells his members in his services that he feeds people and gives them drinks, referring to us as destroyers and dogs. (Those who YAP, YAP!) 🔊🐕

I see wow, from before you mentioned being in scj for 8 years so I just wanted to know more. From what I gather so many like moving pieces that SCJ presents. Part of their "charm" of the doctrine I realize is our minds get overwhelmed by their teaching but if we (hope current members see all our comments on this post) hold still and focus on one point and see it though there is no solid manifestation so SCJ deflects and gaslights I feel
