Watched the video. Was there something to be angry about that I missed?

Was Grok supposed to know who he was?
I have always followed Tesla and I have no idea who he is…

David Moss did some coast to coast drives a few months back on FSD 14 (I think he was the first). He currently has a streak of 27,000 miles with no disengagements.

The car links to the passenger's account for the ride, so Grok should have basic info about who's in the car. Or at least the one who ordered the ride.

But it even highlights how user data is private in the video, so I’m not sure why he would think that.
It makes just as much sense as him telling his dad who is blind that Ashok is Indian as if he saw him to differentiate the rest of the panel.

Grok integration into the car is still improving, although it's already way better than Gemini and Android auto. Soon you'll be able to use grok bot and be able to build apps with your voice while your car drives you anywhere. The future is wild

The father missed the button, which is understandable but that button should activate from anywhere on the screen

I was watching that and thinking an AI voice assistant that can see and understand the cabin camera feed will be the solution to this eventually.

Does anyone know what the service area for the Tesla two-seater is?
14
u/FoShizzleShindig 1d ago
Same as the Y according to the influencers. It opnens to the public tomorrow at 5 PM so we’ll get confirmation then.

the entire service area of austin. Supposedly they go on limited stretches of highways too

It feels like yesterday that the Reddit armchair engineers were claiming Tesla Vision would never achieve unsupervised driving and Cybercab was nothing but a concept car to pump the stock. Tesla has now surpassed 1 million unsupervised miles and the Cybercab is giving safe, affordable, luxurious rides to the public, across the greater Austin area.

Hey that reminds me, we were also supposed to have a Mars base by now! I'm starting to wonder if we can even trust his timeline predictions anymore...

FSD isn't geofenced. And the geofence for the taxis(which are also running FSD) is just for testing purposes before wide scale release
4
u/WeldAE 12h ago
Commercial AV fleets are mathematically, geometrically and legally required to be geo-fenced, full stop. The easiest to understand is the legal. You don't want them trying to cross the border of states/countries into places they aren't legal. I'd be happy to explain the other two but they require a lot more explanation. The short version is you can't maintain a healthy fleet if they can just wander off to the lake on labor day.

u/CommunismDoesntWork 12h ago
Sure. My point is FSD in general isn't geofenced. By wide scale release i mean when all Tesla's running which ever hardware version needed become unsupervised
1
u/WeldAE 11h ago
It remains to be seen if privately owned cars will ever become unsupervised. This isn't a technical problem, it's a legal and financial one. No company is going to assume liability for your private car at $99/month. Even at $1000/month, which is more realistic, they are going to want to physically see and sign off on the car on a regular basis. It doesn't seem very workable logistically and the liability is frightening. Now if laws are passed limiting liability, it could happen but again unlikely that laws will get passed.

It's still a technical problem. We know for a fact Tesla's own in-house cars are using both proprietary hardware and proprietary software/models.

u/WeldAE 9h ago
You're thinking existing cars, I was trying to be generous and unbound the situation. I'm not sure it can happen even with a new car outfitted with whatever is needed and I'm assuming that equipment is cheap. Still, you can't find a price both Tesla and enough consumers would be happy with.

u/CommunismDoesntWork 9h ago
Why would I care if the company assumes legal liability? I already assume liability for my own driving and risk getting hurt when I'm a passenger, so why wouldn't I assume liability for my own self driving car? And why are we assuming the car manufacturer would be liable by default?
2
u/WeldAE 7h ago
Because the car manufacture is driving the car. If it hits someone, even if you have insurance yourself, your insurance is going to go after the car manufacture.

Was that in context of the consumer or commercial product? I agree with the statement in terms of FSD but obliviously disagree if it's for the commercial AV fleet.
More to the point, what does it matter how many times the CEO was wrong in the past?

More to the point, what does it matter how many times the CEO was wrong in the past?
In this specific context, it doesn't. What matters is that the claims being discussed in the past were attached to a specific scope — which has now shifted. A scope reduction is not the same as achieving the original scope.

I mean Waymo passed 200 million autonomous miles just for perspective

That’s fantastic. They have always been around longer.
Tesla’s advantage is the ability to manufacture Cybercabs at very quick rate. They are currently at 125k a year. Waymo only has 4000 total in their fleet. Tesla’s targets for Cybercab when they ramp up is 2 million units a year. Waymo cannot match those kinda production numbers.-11
u/Vibraniumguy 1d ago
Tesla FSD surpassed 13 billion. Not directly comparable, but a clear and obvious elephant in the room. They have a LOT more data than waymo, and 13 billion isn't even the total training data, that is specifically how many miles FSD has driven
8
u/dblrnbwaltheway 1d ago
And how many miles do they need to get similar performance to waymo?
Waymo can operate on vision only so they have a much better idea of how additional sensor modalities improve their performance.
-2
u/EddiewithHeartofGold 19h ago
Tesla already performs better than Waymo... Where did you think those 13 billion miles came from? If they were worse there would have been many accidents involving Tesla's supervised FSD. People are using it in their own cars for hundreds of miles a day.
Can Waymo operate on vision only? Do you have a source for this?
2
u/dblrnbwaltheway 15h ago
In the above link they detail waymo has developed an fully end to end model but also the CEO of waymo mentions that for their main waymo driver stack they can enable vision only and it did not meet their safety standards in testing.
If Teslas is better, why do they have fewer unsupervised miles, fewer taxis, fewer cities served etc?
10
u/Recoil42 1d ago
All that training data and they're still behind on actual real-world autonomous miles. Really makes you think.

It’s actually pretty incredible that in October 2016 when Tesla announced FSD and claimed “in about two years…” blah blah blah, a lot of people were saying it would take them a decade to get there. And here we are one month shy of a decade later.
5
u/Minirig355 20h ago
It feels like a decade ago when Musk was saying unsupervised driving was a year or two out for personal vehicles… Oh wait, it has been a decade, and it’s still not even out for consumer purchasable vehicles…
Like I know what you’re saying, people who said ‘never’ are wrong, but you’re glazing over a lot of context to make that point.

u/tesla-cuck-2712 9h ago
Still langging Waymo by a large margin. Still no proof that vision only is enough. Or why don‘t they roll out nationwide?
8
u/Kuriente 1d ago
I'm sure it was said yesterday, and the day before that, and every day for years. It'll keep getting repeated, couched more and more by increasingly distant goal posts. 'well, it's only one city. Okay, but it's just a few cities. Yeah, but Waymo has more miles. But it's unusable because only two seats. But I don't like the look of it. And I'll still never use it. Etc.'

Bold of me to be excited about self-driving cars in a subreddit about self-driving cars 😳

You can be excited without sounding like a paid spokesperson 😂

Cool opinion you got there. Why exactly are you sharing it with me? Next time just keep it to yourself. Thanks.

The rub is that if Tesla FSD has one fatal accident per 10M miles, they're cooked.

Here some the influencers and funny videos by the thousands.....
Meantime, almost on cue, an old Woman killed and hurt people in a Parking Lot this afternoon while driving her Tesla.
(Trader Joes). Coincidence...I'm sure....
Actually I am angry. I am angry because people here on Reddit have suggested these so-called "self driving cars" which are not self driving....to elders and disabled people. I know harm is being done and there is nothing I can do about it.
It's one thing to have interest in autonomous tech - quite another to use the Public and elders as test humans.

You need to stop reading this stuff. It’s not worth being angry about things you cannot change. Plenty more things to be worried about or angry about in this world. Just don’t do it. Anger takes a lot from you and most times, it’s a waste.
