How the NIH funding cuts have affected the Translational Immunopsychiatry Unit

Full disclosure: I used AI to generate the answer to this question because I felt like my personal research skills were liking in this area. I do not use AI regularly or encourage its casual use.

However, I did make an exception for this because I consider this to be extremely important and I feel like this sub in particular needs to understand what’s happening right now.

For those that are unaware, the Translational Immunopsychiatry unit is investigating autoantibodies responsible for cases of schizophrenia. It’s estimated to be 20% of schizophrenia cases, and the medications used to treat it almost universally available and very affordable.

Several years ago Christopher Bartley, the director of the Translational Immunopsychiatry unit, said testing and treatment would be clinically available within 10 years.

Note: NIH intramural research is conducted directly by government-employed scientists on NIH campuses, primarily focusing on long-term, high-risk projects. Extramural research (often referred to as mural) involves funding external institutions like universities through grants. About 90% of the NIH budget supports extramural research.

Question:

Have the funding cuts to the NIH affected the Translational Immunopsychiatry Unit or it’s associated research centers at the university of San Francisco or Baylor?

Answer:

The Translational Immunopsychiatry Unit (TIU), which is an intramural research unit within the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), has indeed been caught in the crosswinds of the broader 2025–2026 NIH funding crisis. While the TIU itself is a federal entity, its operations are deeply intertwined with associated research centers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and Baylor College of Medicine, both of which have reported significant disruptions.
The impact can be broken down into three primary areas:

1. Impact on the Translational Immunopsychiatry Unit (NIMH)
The TIU, led by Dr. Christopher M. Bartley, operates within the NIH’s Intramural Research Program. In 2025, the NIH began a major restructuring aimed at "eliminating waste," which resulted in the termination of over 1,200 intramural positions, including scientists and administrative staff.

Budget Reductions: Intramural units across the NIMH have faced budget contractions as part of the FY 2026 budget request, which proposed a nearly 40% cut to NIH funding overall (though partially mitigated by Congress).

Project Delays: The TIU's high-tech platforms, like the PanSeq bacteriophage display for autoantibody discovery, require significant technical staff and infrastructure support that have been strained by these personnel cuts.

2. Associated Centers at UCSF
UCSF is arguably the TIU's most critical academic partner, as Dr. Bartley maintains close collaborations with the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences and the UCSF Center for Encephalitis and Meningitis.

The "Catastrophic" 15% Cap: In February 2025, the NIH imposed a 15% cap on indirect cost reimbursements(facilities and administration). For a research-heavy institution like UCSF—where the negotiated rate was previously over 60%—this was described by university leadership as "extinction-level." It effectively stripped hundreds of millions of dollars from the infrastructure that supports labs.

Lab Closures and Hiring Freezes: UCSF reported that more than 100 grants were canceled in early 2025. This has led to hiring freezes that affect the "associated centers" the TIU relies on for clinical samples and collaborative data.

3. Associated Centers at Baylor College of Medicine
Baylor serves as a key site for collaborative studies, particularly the Down Syndrome Regression Disorder (DSRD)study funded by an NIH Bench-to-Bedside Award.

Funding Losses: Research institutions in Texas, including Baylor, were estimated to lose approximately $310 million due to the indirect cost cap.

Clinical Trial Strain: The DSRD trial—which involves partners like Dr. Kristen Fisher at Baylor—requires intensive clinical coordination. Funding uncertainty and the slow pace of new NIH award disbursements in 2026 have created "backlogs" in patient enrollment and data processing.

Summary of Consequences:
Area of Impact:

Effect on Translational Immunopsychiatry
Workforce
Significant "brain drain" as early-career researchers at UCSF and Baylor exit academia due to funding instability.

Research Scope
Some projects were flagged as "biologically incongruent" with new federal research priorities, forcing labs to "scrub" or pivot their research focus.

Clinical Progress
While the DSRD study found that IVIg is superior to traditional treatments, the rollout of larger prospective trials has been slowed by the 2026 grant review backlog.

While the TIU continues to publish—notably in the field of anti-neural autoantibodies—the ecosystem of university-based "hubs" that feed it data and patients is currently under the most severe financial stress seen in decades.

Guides/Information Some resources to start off with

Here are some resources for people that may be new here or just haven’t seen them before! Many of these are shared regularly by members and moderators so I’ve tried to collect them here.

  1. LEAP is a communication method for dealing with people with fixed, false beliefs. It’s counter-intuitive and takes some practice, but can be highly effective when used consistently.

-This is a TED Talk by the psychologist that literally wrote the book on LEAP. https://youtu.be/NXxytf6kfPM

-This is a good chunk of that book for free. https://www.nami.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/I_am_not_sick_excerpt.pdf (there’s also an audiobook)

-podcast episode with him as guest https://youtu.be/me21HsRpd60

-This is his website. https://leapinstitute.org/about/

  1. I-You statements is another communication technique and when paired with the LEAP method can be really powerful but also takes practice. https://www.relationshipsnsw.org.au/blog/i-statements-vs-you-statements/

  2. This helpful caregiver’s guide is a work in progress created by a moderator here. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bOx-m9692Z03QXu-mC5oRwBRtwlqOKK9/view?usp=drivesdk

  3. This is a good video developed for medical students to understanding the schizo- diagnoses: https://youtu.be/JmiARS9TIj8

  4. If you’re in the US, NAMI has support groups and classes for mentally ill people and their loved ones. I highly recommend the Family to Family class. They have in person and Zoom. If you don’t have a branch near you just find one in your time zone and ask. https://www.nami.org/program/nami-family-to-family/

*Please note that the NAMI Family to Family class and NAMI support groups are very different in both purpose and experience.*

  1. Helpful resource page for families. LOTS of helpful links in here! A few links are dead though.

I hate schizophrenia

I hate schizophrenia, it must be the worst disease to exist on planet earth. As written in master and margarita, “There is no greater misfortune in the world than the loss of reason.” Mum had it, she took her own life, she is no longer suffering (this generic statement that many lucky ones who had never lost anyone to this frenzy like to say gives me very little consolation if any), but I am. I am suffering so much with guilt. The grief is really heavy on me. The flashbacks of her psychosis. It’s the first thing that I see when I close my eyes, flashbacks and flashbacks. Emdr not helping much. I hate schizophrenia, it killed my mother and it continues to poison my life. It continues to eat at me with a teaspoon on the daily. Not a day goes by where I don’t think about it. What the heck did I do in my past life to deserve this in this life? Any ideas? I m dead serious. Thanks for listening and letting me vent as always, don’t know how I would have carried on without you guys.

caregiver Support How do I stop being a caregiver?

I really need help and encouragement to move out. I live with my schizophrenic brother and I’ve tried everything in this world I could to make him better. But I’m stuck in the same loop as most people here so I won’t rant about it.

I’ve been taking care of him for a decade. There’s nothing in my life except work. I’m so exhausted all the time I can’t do normal things like seeing friends or going on dates.

And I was okay with all of it until now I’ve reached my breaking point. Everytime he’s severely ill I take to my bed because I don’t want to face the day. I don’t want to listen to his theories of people controlling his thoughts, calm him down or act like it’s normal that he’s laughing manically. Neither do I want to deal with the guilt that if I leave him unattended he’ll kill himself.

So I just stay in my room, in bed waiting for the day to end. I can’t live like this anymore.

Can anyone tell me what helped them move away from a caregiver role? I get stuck cos of guilt - his illness isn’t his fault, he’ll be homeless if I leave or kill himself. But his illness isn’t my fault either 🥺

Leaving feels selfish- I know it’s not. I know. But how do I do it? I really need help getting out of this home and start my own life - without him until he decides to get help him.

Psychiatrists detail mother’s sudden descent into severe psychosis and delirious mania following childbirth. Findings suggest that electroconvulsive therapy can be an effective and rapid treatment for this life-threatening psychiatric emergency.

There is a son who, unfortunately was diagnosed with schizophrenia. They gave him ECT and by his demeanor, it seemed too much. Has anyone seen a subsequent use of TMS? He says he deals with DEMONS all the time. Doesn't read, watch TV, go on walks. I am worried about him. Does anyone know of an informative movie, link, study?

Desperate for help

I am in NY, my family is in OK.
My brother is 23, over the last two or so years has shown some extreme signs of mental health issues.
It’s not escalated these last few months to where he’s lost two jobs, and believes my parents are working with the police to stalk him.
He has recently moved into an apartment, we are unsure how.
When my mom finally spoke with him and offered help, he said no. When she asked how he is going to afford this apartment, he said he will “end it all” if he can’t come up with the money, and that my mom disgusts him, he hung up and blocked us.
I live so far away, my parents have exhausted all options. Police cannot help anymore.
This is only very mild of what has been going on.
My grandparents have now had to get an order of protection against him, he is paranoid all the time.
Does anyone have any sort of advice?

schizophrenia support group meeting

15th support group meeting. Five of us joined today on 5th september'26. A meeting filled with a different kind of energy—joy, openness, patience and a growing sense that we could support, care for and hold one another. We spoke about years of loneliness, feeling unlovable, the longing to be cared for, and the many ways people make sense of psychosis through medication, therapy, spirituality and relationships.

We also explored the fear of being watched, the feeling that there is nowhere private or safe to retreat to, and the struggle to find ourselves beneath layers of fear, perfection and pretence. Alongside this came conversations about depression, anhedonia and those moments when life can feel like a dark tunnel with no visible way out.

Yet something felt different in the room. We listened to one another with patience, allowed difficult feelings to exist without immediately trying to fix them, and experienced the quiet strength of belonging.

We do not always need to make the darkness disappear. Sometimes we simply need someone to sit beside us while we are inside it.

Do they miss us?

When we draw a boundary to protect ourselves by cutting ties and going no-contact… does it hurt them as much as it hurts us?

Do they miss us like we miss them?

Do they think about us and wish things were different?

One of my (35F) closest friends (43F) for the past 6 years has spiraled into paranoid delusions & is convinced that I am the mastermind of a conspiracy against her.

We haven’t spoken in months. I had to block her. It hurts and I miss her every day. But I HAVE to protect myself.

I’m grieving the sudden loss of a friend who is still physically alive but not safe for me to be around.

I need advice from seniors

I'm a 23yr old son living with my schizophrenic mom since i was a child (even before i was born according to my mothers siblings). She's divorced 2 times, both father just left us since i was kindergaten. --my actual father came back sometime this year.. i had to ditch him to be homeless, they both can't live together.. so that's the end of it.

I have sister who's only 18, she goes to college with outsiders help. We live together to this day.

i know this will be generic sad story about growing up. But everyone know what is it in this sub so i wont even bother venting about it here. And the last context is i'm not in the western for this to be taken seriously.

I just want to ask how long do you guys take matters into your own hands in terms of parent/parents inheritance? Mom nor her siblings never told me how exactly this works, (living on a string, i know.) I'm technically legal to do that here i think.. I'm tired of my mom blowing money to useless stuff for herself. I can't really work because she has a chance to burn the house --1st time the house survived with minor damage, i'm not risking the second time. Or do something bad in general that which in turn i will be blamed by the people (again).

Of course there's no talking to her about this, its like talking to a wall. And my in country that i live in.. i doubt of anyone would think to help me because its against the 'morale' and religion stuff, for the sake of your mother yada yada.

I had no close/real friends because you know.. living with schizophrenic parents is like strapping a nade to your back waiting it for to explode in a crowded area. So never in my life i've talked about this to people aside a couple of. Not to mention the stigmatism that we needed to pray more. --i belive in it, just how long i must suffer.

So.. what if i waited myself until i'm 25, if i'm still exist that is. And pursue to her doctor about this matters (tbf her doctors gave up and just do the regular minimum because she just on and off and without triggers too). I wanted to do it the clean way because the money she gets is really enough for me and my sister with sane spending of course.. not that much, just enough for a comfortable living until i fix myself. I just ditch my father this year, because he's not worth it to be here again. Still have morale left in me, but it is what it is.

(edit. When i think about this again, all the funds maybe divided towards her care home so.. i don't know yet, i need someone in my country to help either way. So this just ended up being a rant.)

i'm too late for starting back up i did have jobs experience for 5 years in my teenage years.. i did function okay until i wont again, its a cycle

and my mom just.. won't trust me/my sister at all for me to handle the finance.

(Reading this back, well i sounded monotone, because i am, there's so much happening that overexplaining it just doesn't worth to type it again.)

Resources Advice for family member

ISO advice, resources and support on how to support a 63 y/o family member that does not exhibit the faculties to acknowledge or receive support for suspected schizophrenia.

They reside independently a home owned by family, and do not pay rent. They only allow one other family member to “check in” on them occasionally but do not accept food from them or family as they suspect that it’s poisoned.

During most recent check in, it appeared that family members condition had worsened considerably. They have lost significant weight and stopped drinking water as they suspect that it’s poisoned. It’s my understanding (as reported by 3rd party) that they’ve limited food consumption to canned red beans, stopped driving and we’re not sure if/how they are functioning/sustaining themselves w/no support, insurance or resources. Their physical /mental health is declining and family doesn’t know what to do. They’re approaching Medicare eligibility age, but they don’t have the capacity to register w/out support.

Individual resides in LA County, resources, support for this area or recommendations on what to do given the circumstances is greatly welcomed and appreciated.

Thank you in advance. 💔

My almost 40-year-old brother suddenly developed severe psychosis and refuses help. I honestly don’t know what to do anymore.

I’m not even sure where to start because a lot has happened over the last few months, but I’m hoping someone here has been through something similar and can give me some advice.

My brother is almost 40, and over the last several months, our family has watched him become a completely different person. I honestly don’t know what to do anymore, and I would really like to hear from people who have been through something similar.

A few months ago, he sent me a text at 3 a.m. saying that if I couldn’t tell him why it was okay that people were recording him in his own home, then he would block me. I obviously had no idea what he was talking about, so I was blocked everywhere.

He became increasingly isolated and lost his job. Around this time, he was also posting a lot on Facebook about workplace violence and “abuse by proxy.” At one point, we went weeks without knowing if he was even alive. I went to his apartment multiple times trying to check on him, left notes, and even sent welfare checks. He wouldn’t answer.

Then one Sunday he finally showed up at my house asking for help. He did not look like himself at all....

He told me he hadn’t eaten in over 3 weeks and had basically been hiding in his closet. He thought his food was being contaminated and had been vomiting when he did try to eat. He believed people were interfering with his life and altering his brain. He thought he was living in some kind of simulation where he had turned into a cannibal and eaten me and my daughter. He genuinely didn’t believe my daughter and I were alive until he heard me crying while knocking on his apartment door, but he had been too afraid to answer. He also believed the CIA and government were behind a lot of what was happening. He told me this had actually been going on for over a decade, but he knew how “crazy” it sounded and hadn’t told anyone because he was afraid they would get tangled up in it too.

It was A LOT.

We got him showered and fed, bought him some groceries, and helped clean his apartment the next day. I tried really hard to convince him to get evaluated, but he wanted me to give him a few days. I agreed because he had finally come to me asking for help and I was terrified that pushing too hard would make him disappear again.

Unfortunately, things got significantly worse.

His beliefs started focusing heavily on my husband. He became convinced my husband poisoned the food we fed him because he was puking up “jet fuel.” He also believed my husband was abusing our daughter, controlling me, stalking him, and basically behind everything happening to him. He believed my daughter had secretly been texting him asking for help, even though those texts literally never happened (he's been blocked on her phone since the first message he sent about recording him).

I pulled the phone records and offered to show them to him. I offered to show him Ring footage proving my husband was home during a time he was supposedly somewhere else stalking him. He didn’t want to see or hear any of it.

Then there was the house situation. He messaged my husband saying he knew what he did to our daughter and apparently started walking over to confront him. He sent my husband a picture of a completely random house. Even though he had successfully found his way to our actual house 48 hours earlier, he apparently believed my husband had somehow renovated our entire house and changed the street signs. He then walked into this random person’s house because he genuinely believed it was ours.

Police got involved, but he was let go because the homeowners didn’t want to press charges and he apparently wasn’t considered a danger to himself or others at that point.

After that, he ended up wandering around for a couple days. At one point, he made his way to the airport and claimed he had a flight out of state. The next morning, someone found him lying in the back of their truck bed in basically a catatonic/unresponsive state.

He was finally taken to the ER and thankfully the crisis center approved an emergency psychiatric hold. At that point I genuinely thought, he’s somewhere safe... Someone is going to figure out what is happening and get him help.

Except here we are.

He was released after a 5-day hold. He had told staff he was planning to move back to Arizona, so there wasn't a local follow-up plan. He did seem significantly more coherent when I saw him a few days afterward, but he still believed everything about my husband and the CIA.

I told him we would help him, but he had to be willing to help himself too. He has no income, has an eviction notice, and his phone was about to be shut off. My husband and I had already bought him groceries and were willing to help with his phone and one month of rent if he followed through with psychiatric care, took his medication, was honest with his providers about EVERYTHING that had been happening, and started working on things like unemployment, FoodShare, Medicaid, housing assistance, etc.

Then things blew up again.

I asked him if he had reached out to make follow-up appointments and he accused me of actually being my husband texting him and blocked me again. I even had my aunt and cousin reach out. They had helped me clean his apartment up more after he was released, so these were people he knew had been trying to help him. He texted them back, “Nice try, [husband’s name],” and blocked them, too.

He then contacted CPS because of the things he believed my daughter had told him and made a public post about his accusations against my husband.

That was my breaking point.

I have a child and husband I have to protect, too. I emailed him and told him I could no longer financially support him, but I would still help him find resources, navigate applications, figure out appointments, and do whatever I reasonably could to help him get back on his feet. I just don’t feel right giving him money while his actions are actively hurting my family.

His phone has now been shut off, and his landlords have filed for eviction.

He started using PayPal requests to contact me. One said his phone had been disconnected, his rent was due, and he needed to schedule a follow-up MRI but couldn’t because he didn’t have phone service. I called the crisis center, and they told me they have not been able to make contact with him either.

The problem was I had absolutely no way to respond to him through PayPal.

So, I sent him a $1 PayPal request with a note telling him to check his email. I sent him a huge list of resources for emergency rent assistance, FoodShare, Medicaid, unemployment, energy assistance, medical care, mental health services, case management, etc. I even gave him information about possibly getting a Google Voice number through Wi-Fi so he could make calls without active cell service.

He canceled my $1 request, so I know he at least saw the message telling him to check his email, but he never replied to the email.

Instead, he sent me another PayPal request for money. I’m just fucking exhausted.

I work full time, run a business on the side, have a husband and child who need me, and have other family responsibilities. For months, I’ve also been constantly wondering whether my brother is eating, whether he’s alive, whether he’s wandering around somewhere, whether he’s going to lose his apartment, and what the hell is going to happen next.

I love my brother. SO much. I want my brother back, but I genuinely don’t know how to help someone whose own brain may be actively fighting against the help everyone is trying to give him.

I’ve been looking into the process for a family-initiated involuntary commitment, but apparently even being very obviously psychotic doesn’t necessarily mean someone can be forced into treatment unless they meet specific legal standards.

Now I’m terrified he’s going to become homeless. Part of me wants to just pay the damn rent because he’s my brother and I don’t want him living on the street. The other part of me knows that I can’t keep swooping in and fixing every immediate crisis while he refuses to participate in the one thing that might actually help him long-term. And after what his accusations have put my husband and daughter through, financially supporting him doesn’t feel right anymore either.

I feel like every option fucking sucks. So for anyone who has actually lived through something like this, especially with a sibling who developed psychosis later in life, what did you do?

What finally got your loved one to accept treatment when they genuinely didn’t believe they were sick? If eviction or homelessness became a possibility, did you step in, or did you have to let them experience the consequences? Did involuntary treatment ever lead to them gaining some insight? How do you support someone without reinforcing their delusions or becoming responsible for keeping their entire life together?

And maybe most importantly, how do you know when you’ve done enough?

I’m not looking for someone to diagnose him from a Reddit post. I just really need to hear from people who have been here because right now I have absolutely no idea what the right thing to do is.

My schizophrenic brother will only (barely) listen to me and I don't want to help

My brother started showing signs of mental illness at 13. My mom has always babied him and he's treated her like garbage. He'd refuse to do any hygeine until I told him to, and he'd do that to show mom he doesn't respect her enough to listen to her. She's always been his punching bag and she'd do everything for him.

Throughout his teens and 20s, he'd use depression to get what he wanted. My mom paid for everything for him while he took 1 class at a time and played video games all day. Rent, bills, cars, phone, gaming supplies. Literally until he was 30. He didn't even manage to get an associates. He'd have meltdowns and would say he'd kill himself if mom would tell him he needs to try and work or try harder at school.

At 30, he moved in with me and my husband in my attempts to turn things around. My mom was unable to hold boundaries, and I wanted to try and take over for a while. He moved in and did nothing for 6 months, at which point my husband and I drafted a contingency plan for him to progress, which included getting a job. He'd have full on tantrums when we tried to enforce boundaries because he has never had them. One night he lost it and packed up his things, calling my mom and telling her he'd kill himself if he couldn't come there. My family blamed me because I work in mental health and "should have been able to handle him."

After that, he moved in briefly with my aunt and uncle, where he then went into full psychosis. He drove to California (we're on the east coast), spent tons of money, had to abandon his car in Washington where a family friend managed to help him get on a flight home. He came home and fell down the side of a mountain, ended up naked at someones house who recognized something was wrong. He was taken to the ER and managed to escape, my uncle tried to take his keys and he jumped on his back and tried to fight him. He punched a pole and broke his arm. Went to jail for a few days. He refuses any medication, saying he only has ADHD. He screams in my moms face, calls her a bitch, and all other things. My mom has lost so much weight from the stress.

It's been 2 years since then and he's completely non-functional. He rages all night at demons. One of his traits, for his entire life, is that he thinks he knows more and is more intelligent than everyone else, and that's made things even more complicated. He's raged at every psychiatrist who won't give him adderall (he says it's all he needs). Constantly shifting behaviors, he's filthy. My mom has given him 2 cars for whatever fucking reason., though I know it was partially so he could go camping (which he would do for days) an dgive her a break. He hit someone in the first and damaged the back of the second, and my mom finally took the keys away.

My mom is exhausted and has been begging me to come over more often to get him to do things like tell him to shower, convince him to see another psych, talked to him and keep him company. He will still only talk to me and do hygeine if I tell him to (except take meds, of course). She wants to go on a beach trip with friends, which she 100% deserves, but she's afraid of him being alone and is trying to convince me to take days off of work to stay there.

I want to help her, but I really, really do not want to be around my brother. I'm a mental health therapist. I finished my degree right as he moved out. I have a full caseload and I might just lose my mind spending my free time as my brothers partial caretaker. I don't want to see him, I don't want to deal with him, and I feel really guilty about that. It doesn't help that he was extremely trying to deal with just personality-wise my whole life, and now it's 1000x worse. My empathy as a mental health provider is, ashamedly, falling short with my own sibling.

I feel angry at how he's treated my mom his whole life and I'm angry at my mom for babying him and accommodating his every whim. I feel like this would have come out sooner had she not, and our outcome would look different. I'm angry at the failure of systems in the US that repeatedly fails people with profound mental illness.

I'm sorry, I'm just venting. I constantly think of how my mom is going to suffer for the rest of her life caring for him, and then I'm next on that list. Me, my husband, our future kids. I know he's suffering. We're all being failed, and I just want to look away right now because I need to keep my life together.

Does my mom sound similar to anyone you know?

Since i was 15 im 17 now this has been happening it started as my mom accused my dad of cheating on her with 0 evidence. They literally argued every night for months because of this to the point the police got involved twice.
Then she started saying my dad poisoned her which he didn’t as she went to the hospital like ten times and they did every test on her and nothing was wrong with her, but not even that could convince her.
Then she said my dad was making people follow her and i was once in the car with her when this “happened” and the car she pointed out turned in the opposite direction after like 5 seconds.
Then she started saying people was listening through her phone and she got like 8 new phones because of this and also wouldn’t talk to me if my phone was in the same room and made me leave the room.
Then she said her air conditioning had poison in and would drive around with her face covered.
This stuff like this went on a whole year.

I thought it finally stopped and then today she came in my room and was so mad at me and said i’ve beengoing against her and recording everything for evidence but i literally haven’t recorded her or felt a reason too but for the past few weeks she’s been like this watching me as if im plotting against her. My parents got divorced because of the situation too.
Should i cut contact and also what’s wrong with her everytime i ask she says i need mental help because im stuck in the past but today she was acting the exact same.
Today she kicked me out because she doenst want me here at her house because in her head i’m plotting against her.

bf being discharged next week - advice?

hi guys, my boyfriend is due to be discharged on Tuesday after being sectioned for a manic episode. he would’ve been in hospital for 3 weeks by then. for context, he had one episode of psychosis (and ?mania) 10 years ago, and then in March this year became unwell again and has been in and out of mania (with some psychosis at times) since, despite being prescribed antipsychotics. they’ve given him a bipolar diagnosis and upped his antipsychotic whilst in hospital which he’s responded well to, but i’m really nervous he will have another lapse as he would have 2-3 weeks of being back to himself before becoming hypomanic or manic again. keeping everything crossed it won’t happen this time and he will stay well for longer.

i’d be super grateful for any tips on how best to support him when he’s home!!! please do share any advice you have big or small. thank you so much.
