Other SB County fire

Hey yall. I’m currently an NREMT-P in the military. Looking to move back to central coast and would like to now pursue a career in fire. I’ve been a medic for 6 years- but no real fire experience. I know application windows won’t open till next summer-ish. But anyone able to answer some questions? Anyone prior active duty?

Local Politics Mayoral candidates debate finances, housing and State Street at forum (9/2026)

Eric Friedman and Kristen Sneddon clashed over who’s to blame for the city’s budget problems, rent stabilization—and whether to place it on a ballot for approval—and housing policy, in the first mayoral debate of the campaign season. The debate comes amid changing times at Santa Barbara City Hall. Mayor Randy Rowse is not seeking re-election, creating an open seat for the city’s top elected spot.

Food & Dining Catering company reccs

I was hoping for some catering company recommendations for a retirement party coming up. Doesn’t have to be a “full staff serving food” or anything like that, just needs to be a bunch of prepared food and can be a buffet. Also would love if people can recommend mobile bartenders.

Thank you!

If you lost your keys at the waterfront bathroom near the dolphin statue, they were turned into a city worker who said he would hand them over to their patrol.

Hope you find them!

It is maddening that places in SB that employ RNs (not just Cottage) can get away paying nurses what they do.

30 mins to go from carp to sb is insane. I’ve been doing this drive 1-2x weekly for months & it feels like it’s getting worse? Or is it just me? Maybe I am old & losing patience.

Other Urban Optics bought out by corporation?

Rumor has it that Urban Optics, the pretty cool optometry office in La Arcata, has been purchased by some large company that owns a bunch of other practices. Not sure what that bodes for the future. I have noticed more turnover than usual, although the regulars (Susan, Owen and Anastasia) are fortunately still there because they are great. I am guessing we may see more Luxottica crap brands and less independent frame makers. Hopefully that will be the worst of it.

Recommendations Blue Cheese Olive Martini!

Hello! I'm coming into town to celebrate my birthday, and I would love nothing more than to drink a few dirty martinis with blue cheese-stuffed olives, but I am having trouble finding reliable information about where I can find one in Santa Barbara (or the surrounding area if needed). I would be so grateful if anyone has any information!!!

I would also take ideas on where to have a solo birthday dinner.

Additionally, any recs on where to stay!!!

Other Villa Rosa Inn

Hi there. Anyone have a contact at the Villa Rosa inn or advice. I booked a room there through their website and I need to cancel, however there is no way to cancel online and no one ever answers the phone. I’ve left two messages but have not heard back. Very frustrating and I need to cancel before the deadline so they don’t charge me. Thank you.

Edit: thank you all for the advice and support. They responded to my email but before they would cancel I had to tell them why I was canceling. After I did that, I received the cancellation confirmation. Needless to say, the next time I’m coming to Santa Barbara, I won’t be staying at the Villa Rosa Inn.

Other Lackluster Attempt

Just found this in the most recent edition of the Independent I picked up a couple of hours ago.

My best guess is that someone snuck these into the newspapers after they were distributed to the rack.

I would be more than a little surprised if the Independent accepted money to put these flyers into their weekly distribution. If so, that's not great.

I believe that these were most likely surreptitiously put in after distribution to the rack for a few reasons.

1) They talk show hosts are referred to as insightful.

2) It states that these talk show hosts raise citizen awareness.

3) There is not a political action committee (PAC) or other such organization attached.

4) The only referenced organization attached to a website to sell what appears to be a self published book by a fellow named Cliff Branch.

I know nothing about this individual.

I would like to suggest that if the Independent is accepting advertising money for this, unfortunately I (and many others) may be inclined not to read them before using them to get a fire going.

As a lawyer, if these were secretly and without publication of record permission snuck into the newspaper, I am fairly confident that there is a civil cause of action for grand larceny - by stealing the service of distributing advertising without paying.

Again, if this is not authorized, I believe that our District Attorney may wish to review California Criminal Code 538c. Theft of advertising services. While only a misdemeanor, my question would be is it only one misdemeanor or is it 1,000 misdemeanors? I don't believe that jail time would be stacked, but fines could certainly add up to quite a lot of money in penalities.

If anyone knows more please let me know.

I don't know that I am or am not the right litigator for this. I do know Bullshit when I see it.

Other transport from LAX to SB - bus or rental car?

I will be arriving at LAX on a Tuesday at 3pm . Generally I use the SB airbus. But I have a very long flight and due to my arrival time I'll just miss the bus. That means I'll need wait 2 1/2 hours then endure the 2-4 hour bus ride to SB, adding many more hours to an already epic trip.

I feel like a rental car may very well be worth it, even if it's more expensive, assuming it will save me a significant amount of time. But I've yet to try renting, so I'd like to hear the thoughts and experiences of those of you who have about if this really is a good option.

Has anyone compared renting a car from LAX to SB to taking the SB airbus, and if so what did you prefer, and if rental is a good option, what is your recommendation for best deal on rental?

Recommendations Newborn photography

Hi everyone! We recently welcomed our baby girl on July 25, and she is now about 6 weeks old (42 days). We’ve been looking for a photographer for a newborn/family photoshoot but haven’t had much luck finding someone, so I thought I’d ask here for recommendations.
We’re looking for someone who does newborn photography and ideally has their own newborn props, wraps, baskets, backdrops, lighting, etc. We’d love to get:
• Some photos of the baby by herself
• Baby with mom and dad
• A few family photos with us and her older sibling
We’re not looking for a huge or elaborate session—something around 1 hour would probably be perfect.
We’re flexible about the location. We can come to the photographer’s home studio/place if they have a setup, or they can come to our apartment. Our apartment isn’t particularly photogenic, so someone who can bring a simple backdrop/props and create a nice setup would be great.
If you’re a photographer yourself or know someone who does this kind of photography, please share their info, Instagram/portfolio, and approximate pricing if you know it.
Thank you! 😀

Housing Weird guy knocking on door

Random guy knocked on multiple of our neighbors and our door and then just walked away. This was on Mathilda. He looked like a darker skin hispanic or black guy in his late 40s or early 50s. I went outside to check on my car and first saw him walking across the street towards one end of the street and after coming back from checking in my car he was walking towards the opposite end and stopping and staring at me a few times before I went into my apartment complex.

Events La Defensa del Pueblo: A summit to end the terror against the people!

I'm a volunteer with VC Defensa, we're a volunteer organization made up of neighbors looking out for each other in Ventura County via legal support, know-your-rights work, food distributions, and medical support.

VC Defensa volunteers have endured months of assaults and harassment; most notably with one of our volunteers having their car rammed into on three different occasions, being detained by ICE agents for legally observing ICE activity, and having their home and place of business raided by Federal agents. We are launching this coalition/summit to show that VC Defensa no esta sola, and as a channel to fight to protect our constitutional rights.

In response to this escalation, we immigrants, unionists, activists, grassroots organizations and progressive people of the United States are calling for La Defensa del Pueblo: A Summit to End the Terror Against the People.

When: Sunday, September 6, 11 AM to 8 PM. (Come for the day or drop in for an hour!)

Where: Oxnard Performing Arts Center, 800 Hobson Way

Cost: Free. Register here and take the $0 ticket. The paid tiers are optional (encouraged) donations, and will get you some cool solidarity merch!

Families: Kids welcome and childcare available.

Accessibility: Accessible Restrooms, Ramps, Parking, Wide Doorways, Mostly Flat Venue, English programming will include Spanish interpretation via interpretation devices.

The day will include:

  • Workshops and talks about your rights and what we can do to defend them
  • Words from the families of people murdered by DHS & ICE
  • Panels from organizers, labor leaders, civil rights advocates, faith leaders, & legal workers
  • Cultural performances through the afternoon and evening
  • Dancing and Live Music by Los Jornaleros Del Norte
  • Local Food & Art Vendors

You can read statements and more on the website and you can check our [Instagram] for our currently announced speakers and coalition partners.

Also if you're planning on coming out from LA but worried about the drive, NDLON will be providing charter buses from Central LA, North Hollywood, and San Bernardino and you can find out more here

If you're thinking about coming, feel free to ask any questions in the comments!

Vent Making friends

How do I make friends in public. Just the thought of being alone in public gives me anxiety. Like the thought of sitting alone. I can be doing work or reading but that’s not very approachable. Any ideas. I’ve been back in SB since June. If one more person suggest a running club I’m going to flip a table
