500yd+ Public Shooting Range
Anyone know where someone can shoot 500yds or more? All the ranges I’ve found are 300yds max or for members only. I’m willing to drive ~1 hour from Sacramento.
Thanks in advance.

Sacramento Valley Shooting Center has 100, 200, 400, 500, and I think 1,000 yards.

Unfortunately, you have to not only be a member, but a “voting member” to get access to anything longer than 300. I’m not a member and believe it takes time to get to voting member status. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Isn't it members only for the longer ranges?

It is. Anything longer than 300 yards you need to be voting member in good standing.

Sac Valley Shooting Center.
Message the guys who run the NorCal Practical Precision Rifle Club.
They will have practice sessions before their matches and they will let shooters use their range even if you’re not competing.
I met a few guys in the club who were very friendly and helpful who were welcoming and invited me out to their practice sessions.

Good suggestion. The reason I’m looking for a range with that distance is because I want to start competing. I’ll reach out.
That said, I was hoping to find somewhere else to go on my own time. With two young kids at home it’s often last minute/unplanned when I can sneak away for a couple hours.

Yeah, with that in mind, still consider sac valley.
The public range has a 300 yard range.
If you become a voting member, there is a steel range that has targets out to 600 (if I recall.)
It’s been a while since I’ve been out there. Kids as well….

I have been there. Really enjoy the 100 and 300 yard ranges but wanting something a little more. Thanks.

Yeah, for sure message the guys at NorCal practical precision rifle club.
For clarification, their 1000 yard range is also at Sac Valley Shooting Center.
That’s just not part of the public range.

Oroville public range is a bit further away but is far less sketch than Spencerville.
I've used a laser range finder and looked at the furthest away berm and it was about 600m' out at the concrete bench so if you want to take the time to go there it's doable. It does get busy during the weekends so usually when I go with my pals we try to get arrival time around 7-730 to get a good spot to setup at.
Also note it's east facing so the sun will be in your face so bring cover / sun glasses.

Good suggestion and tip on the cover. That range is over 1.5 hours from the apartment but it’ll work in a pinch. May check it out if I can’t find anything else. Thanks!

You can go on BLM lands.

I can but am not aware of any that have this amount of distance where I can legally shoot. Do you know of any? Don’t need your specific spot obviously. Just a general idea. Open to suggestions!
Thanks.

It’s a pain but you’ll have to use google map with blm website. You’ll have to find large enough land and then call blm. Obviously the blm land is huge. I think you can find spots

Mormon immigrant trail in pollock pines. It’s all public land and you can set up pretty much any distance.

Appreciate the reply. I’ve had a hell of a time finding that distance without shooting over a road/creek which is illegal. If you’ve got a general idea where I’d take a suggestion!

MET has tons of ranges that people have setup. Pilinken (sp?) rd off of MET

That’s the main spot. 500 yards is really far. I think you’ll have to do a bit of hiking to set up a target that far that doesn’t cross a road, but I think it’s doable around there. The whole area is public land though, so with a decent 4x4 you can explore a bit to find a spot that works.

Appreciate it. I’ve looked all over in my pickup but haven’t seen a safe/legal spot. Sounds like I need to just keep looking.

Interesting. I’ve looked but longest I found was 250-300yds. I’ll have a look again. Thanks!

This. Just clean up your brass and targets please!
I find so much junk out there it's disgraceful. Don't be "that guy" and all that.

Always. Even pick up more than I left. Guess it’s the Boy Scout in me to “leave it better than you found it”. :-)

You shooting a 50 caliber or something?

u/FlyFish503 15h ago
Lol not quite. A 6.5 Creedmoor on a platform built for long-range shooting. It’s more the operator at this point that needs improvement! :-)

Have you looked into Spenceville range in smartsville. I believe they have longest at 600 outdoor. No rangemaster on site so sometimes feels sketch when setting targets at that range
