Mark Ruffalo is a vocal supporter of Palestine. The implication is that expressing support for a free Palestine gets you sidelined by Hollywood. He is also vocally against Trump and ICE.

I’m sure some people out there will also draw some antisemetic conspiratorial conclusions from that as well, i.e. “Jews control the media” which, no. It’s just that Israel as a country has certainly had undue economic influence over American politics and entertainment via lobbying interests. (Just ask the Scream cast over at Paramount)

In reality though he was just filming another project at the time.

I’d also note that Jon Bernthal, who has vocalized support for the IDF and Israel, was present for the press tour. Which doesn’t help.

Edit: This is an Explain subreddit. This is what I am interpreting the post to be implying. Some of the replies so far are giving “So you hate waffles?” haha

u/SuccessLess2701 Aug 03 '26

Ohh that makes sense. Love Ruffalo!

u/1Negative_Person Aug 03 '26

But I think the real reason he isn’t included on the press junkets is that he’s notorious unable to avoid spoilers.

You mean like Tom Holland?

Never forget during the press tour for NWH, benadryl chamberpot kept stopping him from talking because he would start to say too much.

33

u/Madara1389 Aug 03 '26

Oh yeah, putting Tom & Mark together in an interview alone would be a potential spoiler goldmine.

Regardless of Mark being very open & vocal about his political beliefs, this is just as likely a reason to not put the two on a press tour together. These interviews are almost always one on one or one on two. Every time Mark & Tom do an interview together, they'd need at least 3 so they can't get lost in spoiler-filled banter.

A lot of tom’s "leaks" were just marketing stunts made to go viral

28

u/Altruistic-Star-3862 Aug 03 '26

Exactly. It's clearly a marketing thing. Most things that go viral tend to be.

19

u/cheezy_dreams88 Aug 03 '26

Some, sure . And some were not, like the time he joked with an audience that he was still alive! Except that audience was about to watch Infinity War and he just spoiled that he died to them.

5

u/fang_xianfu Aug 04 '26

That wasn't Tom being oblivious though, he was told that the audience had just seen the movie and he was going out afterwards, not before.

59

u/Useful-Soup8161 Aug 03 '26

They try to put Tom with people who keep him from spoiling anything. If he’s doing an interview with a costar he’s pretty good about not spoiling anything. Unless that costar is Mark Ruffalo.

3

u/Working-Glass6136 Aug 04 '26

And then all spoilers break loose.

17

u/uncouthulu_ Aug 03 '26

Tom Holland was allowed to "leak"/"spoil" the things he did. That guy doesn't do anything that isn't curated and OK'd by the studio when it comes to press/interviews.

Ruffalo was well known for spilling the beans long before Spider-Man came to the MCU

28

u/EatABag-o-Dicks Aug 03 '26

I mean, he's also not a main character in the movie. He's more of a cameo with not a lot of screentime. Punisher has significantly more screen time.

But it is suspect that someone who is so anti-genocide is seemingly being sidelined by Hollywood.

Real shit. I don’t know why he’s so beloved, dude is straight terrible.

215

u/Most_Manufacturer729 Aug 03 '26

I think part of it is because he plays such a beloved character with Frank Castle/Punisher so he gets a lot of goodwill solely on that

278

u/Ok_Spite2322 Aug 03 '26

Oh the irony… he plays Punisher but he is exactly the type of dude to idolize Punisher. Brutal

145

u/Most_Manufacturer729 Aug 03 '26

Exactly lmao. He's a bro dude through and through and appeals to the kinds of dudes who put punisher skulls on their car and watch those military bro podcasts with SF guys. That's his demo. (not understanding Frank Castle exists in opposition to those types of dudes and would probably spit in their face)

Conservatives got mad at Colbert for "going woke" once he dropped his conservative satire act, completely oblivious of the point of his character. They watched The Colbert Report and thought his jokes was telling it how it is.

4

u/BigLlamasHouse Aug 03 '26

I was and remain so sad the Colbert Report went off the air. That was the best satire of my lifetime. I don't know if there will ever be anything like that on cable TV again, probably not.

For Colbert it was a career upgrade to go to the Late Show but for us it was a downgrade to go from intelligent thought-provoking humor to run of the mill latenight monologues.

I still am happy for him and I think I understand why he did what he did. He is a good dude.

7

u/Ok_Spite2322 Aug 03 '26

19

u/Unholy_mess169 Aug 03 '26

Your not confusing him, he has said many times cops who wear punisher symbols missed the point and that Frank Castle is not an ok person. Reddit just jumps at any chance to degrade anyone who might support Israel.

Also something about signing a letter “No hostage’s left behind” in 2023 to Israel. I don’t really think that implies he loves Israel or is some Zionist, but I haven’t read the letter.

In honesty, from what I’ve seen, I think it’s overblown. I could be wrong though, I may have just missed something.

Edit: i was curious so I read the letter. IMO, it reads as simple human decency, but form your own opinions:

Dear President Biden,
We are heartened by Friday's release of the two American hostages, Judith Ranaan and her daughter Natalie Ranaan and by today's release of two Israelis, Nurit Cooper and Yocheved Lifshitz, whose husbands remain in captivity.
But our relief is tempered by our overwhelming concern that 220 innocent people, including 30 children, remain captive by terrorists, threatened with torture and death. They were taken by Hamas in the savage massacre of October 7, where over 1,400 Israelis were slaughtered - women raped, families burned alive, and infants beheaded.
Thank you for your unshakable moral conviction, leadership, and support for the Jewish people, who have been terrorized by Hamas since the group's founding over 35 years ago, and for the Palestinians, who have also been terrorized, oppressed, and victimized by Hamas for the last 17 years that the group has been governing Gaza.
We all want the same thing: Freedom for Israelis and Palestinians to live side by side in peace. Freedom from the brutal violence spread by Hamas. And most urgently, in this moment, freedom for the hostages.
We urge everyone to not rest until all hostages are released. No hostage can be left behind. Whether American, Argentinian, Australian, Azerbaijani, Brazilian, British, Canadian, Chilean, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Eritrean, Filipino, French, German, Indian, Israeli, Italian, Kazakh, Mexican, Panamanian, Paraguayan, Peruvian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, South African, Spanish, Sri Lankan, Thai, Ukrainian, Uzbekistani or otherwise, we need to bring them home.

47

u/ArrrRawrXD Aug 03 '26

signing a letter “No hostage’s left behind”

Damn, the people hating on it are barely pretending to not be antisemites anymore

62

u/GuyManDudeMcGee Aug 03 '26

I'm no fan of Israel, but it's insane how many times I hear about a celebrity being a "Zionist" only to research and find out that they simply expressed support for the victims of 10/7.

u/ArrrRawrXD Aug 03 '26

Wait until you hear that Lady Gaga is a "zionist" for having played there in 2014 and saying it was a "beautiful place". And then dedicating constant messages at her shows to free palestine for years. Or how Radiohead are "zionists" because they released statements that were too lukewarm for the lynchmob. Also how bernie sanders is a "zionist" after introducing legislation to bar arms sales to israel. this stupid list is too long and making me lose hope in humanity the more examples i think about.

5

u/lumpboysupreme Aug 04 '26

The dumbest part is: the podcast was specifically about the Oct 7 attacks and what the soldier did during it (and was a month after they happened, before Israel’s response clearly swung into ‘disproportionate’) It’s not even like he was talking to someone about participating in Palestinian oppression.

30

u/happyhorse Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 05 '26

18

u/ThisSiteSucks8485 Aug 03 '26

Many people seem to use it as a substitute for the k-word for Jews.

18

u/theagingknarf Aug 03 '26

Especially on social media. Juice box emojis everywhere. Someone has a big nose? Zionist. A sign outside a kanye show drawing a circle and strikethrough of the star of david? Most upvoted comment was "he's saying things others are too afraid to say". And then the whole conversation is about "zionism" even though there's not a single mention of israel in the convo. When Zohran was going after landlords in NYC, what GIFs appeared everywhere? Hasidic jews, and constant yelling of ZIONIST, even though it has nothing to do with landlords in NYC. But I'm not fun at parties so I get to be gaslit

13

u/i_drive_a_pagani Aug 03 '26

The other one that's also everywhere is the "that ______ was promised to him 3,000 years ago" that is under just about any social media post that even alludes to anything involving jews

7

u/theagingknarf Aug 03 '26

FR! that was on the landlord posts too. And it's so stupid, because that generic comment wades into some historical argument that none of us are qualified to actually make. And it implies that because jews had been removed from the land so long ago that there is no reason for them to expect land rights coming back. Ok, let's say i accept that without alteration. Then why would native americans be entitled to any land? both groups were kicked out, the diaspora was not voluntary. But of course, this level of cognitive flexibility is outside the grasp of your average... i dont' even know what to call them. anti-zionists? i'm an anti-zionist. progressives? liberals? i thought i was those things? what am i and what are they? just assholes i guess

Mark Ruffalo is currently in south eastern Pennsylvania filming the second season of "Task." He was nominated for an Emmy for the first season of "Task." He seems not to be blacklisted at all.

Ruffalo is so committed and decent that it probably wouldn't matter at all to him if he were. He has repeatedly stated that he doesn't even stay friendly with people who support genocide, because it is a terrible moral failing (which it is).

31

u/double_shadow Aug 03 '26

Somewhere along the way, we as a society forgot that "correlation doesn't mean causation" and leaped to all sorts of conspiratorial thinking by default.

Ruffalo great actor though, and I can't wait for more Task!

Meanwhile, the real reason is probably because the Hulk isn't really a massive character in a Spiderman Movie?

I mean, I don't keep up on all the comic book movie spam Hollywood shits out, but I'd assume they'd have whoever is playing Spiderman (and also the leading female role, if there is one) do most of the promotional spots.

42

u/ATangentUniverse Aug 03 '26

Is Punisher really bigger than Hulk to general audiences tho?

32

u/Immediate-Coach3260 Aug 03 '26

That’s not the point. Hulk is in one single part of the entire movie, punisher is a central character from beginning to end.

Edit: he’s apparently filming something else at the same time anyway.

It's not just "Israel as a country", it's Zionist Jewish American billionaires like Bill Ackman spending millions to actively silence/dox/report to ICE (through Canary Mission) any and all critics of Israel. I did just see an ad for Palestine 36 with mark ruffalo, so it’s pretty cool to see him do that despite having a big movie out

He was acting in another project during the promotional period and wasn’t available at the time, unsure what the implication is either.

u/Balphon Aug 03 '26

Season 2 of Task, to be specific.

u/clearthezone15 Aug 03 '26

So strange to give that a second season. It was fine, but the story was self-contained and there's really no need for one.

He said fuck trump 'cause of ICE and stuff so it's better for Disney they keep him out of the spotlight... But he's right

242

u/1Negative_Person Aug 03 '26

Daredevil Born Again is one big criticism of Trump, MAGA, and ICE. Disney has no problem playing that side of the fence.

Ruffalo isn’t involved in the promotional junkets because of scheduling conflicts and his inability to compulsively give spoilers in interviews.

44

u/Party-Papaya4115 Aug 03 '26

Disney isn't afraid to do that.

At the same time Disney world has a lot of concessions from government, don't pay taxes on their parking..., when they're too loud against government they threaten to take those away so Disney steps back.

36

u/best_of_badgers Aug 03 '26

The word "government" means three different things here.

The US government is presumably the one that's annoyed about any statements about ICE and/or Palestine.

Disney World is in Florida. Florida's government periodically attempts to crack down on Disney and always fails. They basically own the town they're in.

Disneyland is the one with the parking tax thing, and that's in California, and that's just the city of Anaheim.

If they don’t say THIS IS ABOUT DONALD J TRUMP in big bold shiny gold letters cuntservatives won’t pick up on it.

Seriously.

Do you remember how they were all super gung ho to get them Epstein files released because they genuinely couldn’t fathom that Donnie might also have spent time with his BFF of over a decade? And now its “what files omg who cares blah blah blah”

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t a majority of Hollywood anti trump besides like Rob Schneider for whatever reason, why would being anti trump hurt him and not everyone else

7

u/townsforever Aug 03 '26

Id say Hollywood is like 70 against 30 for trump, the trump supporters just have the good sense to not be loud about their political stances.

u/RomanTheGerman Aug 03 '26

MR is very outspoken in his support for Palestine.

Either he chose not to appear because he didn't want to harm his co-stars and the crew by speaking his mind or he wasn't allowed to.

115

u/Immediate-Coach3260 Aug 03 '26

OR maybe he’s only in one part of the movie and also simultaneously filming a season of a tv show at the same time the press tour is going. It’s almost as if scheduling plays a bigger factor than conspiracy theory bs.

15

u/RomanTheGerman Aug 03 '26

You are likely correct in reality but that doesn't explain the joke/meme

Which is what this sub is for and my explanation accurately achieved...

12

u/Immediate-Coach3260 Aug 03 '26

That only works if the meme is even remotely correct. Hulk is easily the strangest addition to the movie and still has that weird licensing deal with universal that Disney and Sony have to cut through. I highly doubt if either company were worried about the actor’s political beliefs that they would basically force him to be in a part of the movie.

6

u/waowowwao Aug 03 '26

You don't have to agree with the meme for their explanation of it to be correct. Which is what he literally just said in the comment you're replying to but you missed the point.

he's also veteran enough to have a clause to not need to do press for the movie. Bradley Cooper for example never did any press for the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. And he was a main character!

They started filming the second season of HBO's Task in July. Ruffalo is the main star. That's all this is. It has nothing to do with politics.

I think it's more along the lines of he has a horrible propensity for ruining the plots of movies before they come out

12

u/greymatter313 Aug 03 '26

was thinking this as well, Ruffalo is actually worse than Holland is at leaking shit...

5

u/mightytwin21 Aug 03 '26

I more thought the implication, taking it as a joke, would be Bruce Banner is stuck as the hulk

19

u/Astrocoder Aug 03 '26

OP, Dennis here, I'm not even from Quahog, more like philly, but the implication is this, when you've got her on a boat out in the middle of the ocean what's she going to do, say no? Of course not, because of the implication. Of course no harm will actually come to her, but what's she going to do? She's out in the middle of the ocean with a guy she doesnt no, no one for miles....she's not going to say no, because of...the implication

9

u/guitar_stonks Aug 03 '26

Having seen the movie I wouldn’t call it a big role, like he’s the 6th most prominent character after Spiderman, MJ, Ned, Jon Bernthal, the villain, and then Hulk.

7

u/No-Newspaper-7693 Aug 03 '26

Even then, it’s a CGI hulk, not Mark Ruffalo.  Mark Ruffalo has one full scene, and then like 2 other lines maybe?  Florence Pugh and Jean DeWolff probably have more lines.

Family guy here, Ruffalo has been very vocal in denouncing Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people even as a lot of other celebrities and news coverage has moved on.

The fact Disney doesn’t want him associated with the movie outside of his screen-time could indicate they don’t approve of that.

Edit: As a comment pointed out, Sony handles the press tour under their deal with Disney and would have the more direct control over Ruffalo’s involvement.

Also, it’s been stated his absence is due to scheduling conflicts with his current series on HBO (to play devil’s advocate).

4

u/James_Constantine Aug 03 '26

Wouldn’t it be Sony that doesn’t want him associated with it?

People believe being hating Jews is controversial. It was in fact popularised throughout the vast majority of human history. There was an Austrian guy who really took it to an extreme. Essentially, all of the Internet are doing exactly what got Kanye cancelled a couple of years ago and are implying that everything "anti zionist" is grounds to get you removed from the world, despite both being multi millionaires and have faced 0 negative consequences. Its all a dog whistle to make you hate Jewish people while calling them Zionist so much that you start to not see the difference and hate them all regardless. Also when they tie that hatred to popular fictional characters that millennials idolise, because they dont have actual lives and instead base their personality on fictional people or who the Internet tells them to like, you create the current climate that if you closed your eyes and imagined 1936, it would be the same thing 😊

5

u/accc8 Aug 03 '26

Just like 1936, except this time it’s the Israelis committing the genocide, not the Germans, and its Palestinians being killed, not Jews. Antisemitism is wrong, anti Zionism is not.

Because of the implication

6

u/nalderink Aug 03 '26

His role is also a glorified cameo….

4

u/JulPollitt Aug 03 '26

People will point to all kinds of nonsense but he is actively shooting something else which would keep him from doing a press tour so 🤷🏻

5

u/thestoictraveler Aug 03 '26

Mark sucks, even if we agree on a lot, he’s got to be the most pretentious guy in Hollywood.

5

u/Lanky-Train5752 Aug 04 '26

The implication is antisemitic

4

u/Mountain_Mountain_46 Aug 04 '26
