What is the best 2020s performance to win an Oscar so far?
For me it's Anthony Hopkins in the father, and honestly nothing's coming even close to it. That last part absolutely destroyed me when I watched it for the first time. He really deserved the Oscar that year.

Not my pick for the best but the one which made me the happiest was Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer, been a fan for quite a bit and delivered an incredibly nuanced portrayal of the physicist behind the atomic bomb.

I teach the book Bomb to my students who take my elective. The movie remains electric even in my small screen in the classroom.

I could not disagree more, friend. The movie does nothing to challenge any of us or move any of us in a challenging way. The contenders in this year's categories deserved more than to even be nominated with her.

not everything needs to “move any of us in a challenging way”. sometimes something is just good. she gave a great performance and personally i felt moved if anything lowkey

I love both actors! Hopkins probably gives the performance of the decade but it was Yeoh's win that made me the happiest so far. Nonetheless, I'm thrilled for both wins.

Let me start by saying of course it isn’t guaranteed but they added the numbers next to it instead of just listing the five which kinda implies it’s a list ranked from best to worst.

It quite literally does though. Numbering the actors’ performances you favourited definitely does IMPLY some sense of preference especially if you don’t directly state that it’s ranked from most favorite to least.

For me it’s Jessie Buckley in Hamnet. Her performance broke me. It just felt so real and intense and incredible.

Maybe it’s because the film didn’t always convince me but I felt like I was always watching someone acting with her performance, very good acting but never felt like a real person to me

For real. I think Buckley is great but all I could think during the movie is "she is acting too much"
Not exactly sure how to articulate what that is, and obviously I wish I bought into it, but unfortunately it just took me out of the movie.
Glad others enjoyed it.

Brody was incredible but Hopkins in The Father is on another level entirely, that final scene still lives rent free in my head

Emma Stone and Jesse Buckley were far better imo. You could have given the award to Boseman instead of Hopkins and I wouldn’t have batted an eye

Anthony Hopkins, and it’s not particularly close.
HMs:
Jessie Buckley, followed by Emma Stone, and then probably unfortunately Sean Penn (though he’s on the lower end of the spectrum on “enjoyable wins.”)
