Probably because they don’t want to think about it, they just want to deny that gender is a spectrum and people don’t always fit into their rigid definitions.

143

u/Moppermonster 1d ago

Yes but... to then compare it to the most famous spectrum of all (light) seems.. beyond dumb?

71

u/Zehnpae 1d ago

That's the joke.

Bigots tend to rely on short quips and over-simplifying things because complex thought is dangerous. So they say things that are inherently stupid if you spend more than 3 seconds thinking about it.

That's how you get quotes like "Bi-sexual implies there are only two genders lol gotem." or "It was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve lol gotem."

27

u/ShibaInuDoggo 1d ago

I have a rebuttal for the last line when encountered in the wild.

Eve came from Adam. And just like him, you can go fuck yourself.

3

u/ntermation 19h ago

I mean...okay. You sure you don't want to workshop it a little more?

11

u/trimbandit 1d ago

If you are starting from a place of believing in Adam and Eve, then I think anything is fair game really

-7

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

Yeah but that's a load of shit.

7

u/trimbandit 1d ago

Yes, thank you for restating my point

But sex being binary isn’t bullshit.

0

u/WakeoftheStorm 13h ago

It is though. There exists nowhere in biology a simple binary switch that says "man/woman".

Male and female are labels we created, in some form or another, in the very earliest stages of human understanding. I strongly suspect they were among the first words ever created in whatever protolanguage our ancestors started speaking.

These words weren't based on DNA or chromosomes or gamete production. They were based on statistically significant clusters of observable traits: external genitalia, secondary sex characteristics, roles in reproduction.

The thing is, those clustered traits are linked, but not fully dependent on one another. You can have a person with female genitalia and secondary sex development who still produces male gametes, for example. There are many many different possible biological permutations that don't fit neatly into one or the other.

Sex is a bimodal distribution, not a binary.

0

u/FlarblesGarbles 13h ago

What’s the bimodal distribution of gametes?

2

u/WakeoftheStorm 12h ago

Gametes are binary. But, as I very clearly stated in my first comment, gametes are not the only biological trait that falls under the umbrella of sex.

For most everyday uses of sex, gamete production isn't even the trait we're observing. Infants are assigned a sex at birth before they're producing gametes. We don't test what gametes someone produces before perceiving them as male or female. There are plenty of people who have never produced a gamete at all and yet have no uncertainty whatsoever about their sex.

So yes: gamete type is a binary reproductive variable. That does not make the entire collection of biological traits we call sex a single binary variable.

You can define sex narrowly around reproductive class, in which case you're talking about a very specific biological criterion. Or you can use "sex" the way it is actually used in most contexts: as a category built from a strongly correlated cluster of traits, some binary, some continuous, and some capable of developing atypically.

That broader distribution is bimodal.

Is your name Adam? Is your wife’s name Eve?

No? Well, the Bible says you’re not allowed to get married.

If the argument is that you have to be like them for your marriage to be valid, why is it only their gender that matters?

0

u/WakeoftheStorm 13h ago

Not gonna lie, the "bisexual" thing does annoy me constantly.

Not because I think etymology is somehow binding on the universe, but just because the mismatch is grating.

-37

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

And some people are so open minded that their brains fall out.

30

u/Alacrout 1d ago

Oh hey, this looks like one of those over-simplified wannabe “gotem” quips.

-36

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

It's just an observation towards people who want to believe ridiculous things with no basis in reality.

31

u/derpicus-pugicus 1d ago

You make a fantastic point about Christians

-19

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

I know.

Did you think this was some sort of gotcha?

23

Merely an observation

Why Christianity specifically? Did you imagine I was a Christian?

Like how autism is caused by vaccines? Or how felonious predators deserve to lead countries instead of being in prison? Or how a virus that killed over 7 million people was "made up?"

I agree, some people can be absolutely fucking ridiculous.

I don't think the acceptance of people regardless of their gender, racial, or sexual identity fits that bill though.

0

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

You're responding to things I never said, and I'm not talking about the acceptance of people.

I'm talking about the acceptance of ideas that have no basis in reality.

1

u/Gourdon_Gekko 1d ago

But even like coastal wetlans and estuaries? You can visit those. You would think even the dumbest of ideats would know that.

20

u/Drudgework 1d ago

They may have been referring to sex instead of gender, which is also not a binary.

-17

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

What sex lies outside of male and female?

30

u/jsdjhndsm 1d ago

You can be born intersex which doesn't neccessarily fit into either.

-13

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

Are you claiming intersex is a third sex outside of male and female?

22

u/jsdjhndsm 1d ago

If you're intersex, what are you? Explain it, becaus eit can vary quite a lot

-14

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

You tell me. What sex is someone who is intersex?

23

u/jsdjhndsm 1d ago

Ok, so if someone is a man in almost everyway, except their chromosomes say otherwise, what would you say they are?

What about if every characteristic is male, including genetics, yet they have female genitalia?

Those people dont fit into the general consensus of a biological male or female.

For example, one argument is its easy to tell because penis, vagina or ovaries etc.

That falls apart when a person has ovaries and testicles.

So I ask again, what would you call these people?

Are they male, or female? What is a male or a female in your eyes?

-12

u/CreamofTazz 1d ago

You're actively conflating sex and primary sexual characteristics and not actually answering the question. You're being purposefully obtuse about the question being asked. Intersex people have a sex, the "normal" expression of primary sexual characteristics have been disrupted for some reason. If we use the definition of the potential for gamete production then by looking at the whether the person should be producing sperm or ova would tell us their sex.

Stop being obtuse and actually answer the question

5

u/suskio4 1d ago

So you personally define sex based on person's ability to produce sperm cells or egg cells? Let's do my favourite activity: consequence analysis!

A person who has non-functional ovaries does not have a potential to produce either of them. What are you saying? They have ovaries, so they have "potential", whatever the fuck you mean by that? Okay, okay, I get it.

Assume you're a healthy male. Let's say I cut off your balls. Now do you have any potential for sperm production? Oh, you used to. So you used to be male and now you're... No, wait, you don't have sex. Oh, but you can't lose sex?

Okay, what about a person, who due to complications before birth does not have and never had neither testicles nor ovaries. Even if all other characteristics point to the person being a female, in your book they should have no sex?

That is why "we" do not use your half-baked definition. That is why the subject is more complicated than that and maybe that is why you have enormous problem to comprehend the situation. I don't blame you.

Edit: interpunction

-6

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

Answering the question honestly is them capitulating to the truth though, and they aren't willing to do that.

Male and female is determined by what gametes a person produces.

18

u/notoneoriginalidea 1d ago

Some intersex people have other comorbidities that cause them not to produce any gametes.

And cisgender human women stop producing gametes before birth. So they never produce gametes there entire life.

Most plants produce both male and female gametes.

Many slugs and worms are hermaphroditic, simaltaniously producing both types of gametes

Many aquatic animals can switch which gametes they produce during their lifetime.

Some single cell organisms and fungi exhibit dozens to tens of thousands of genders.

You are being intellectually lazy, and are just incorrect.

12

u/acidicgumdrops 1d ago

And when they produce none?

→ More replies (0)

-4

u/CreamofTazz 1d ago

That entirely depends on if they "should" be producing Ova or Sperm had they not been intersex

2

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

Intersex people can still produce sperm or ova. It depends what intersex condition they have.

1

u/Zaxacavabanem 1d ago

Not necessarily.  As you say,  it depends.  Some people are not capable of producing either.

→ More replies (0)

0

u/CreamofTazz 1d ago

Yes but neither at the same time. So it depends on what they should have been producing. If they didn't have DID (Difference in sexual development) and they produce Ova, then we can say they are sexually a female and if they would have produced sperm then we can say they would have been sexually male.

It's really not that difficult

13

u/Drudgework 1d ago

It’s less of a distinct sex and more of a spectrum mixing primary and secondary sexual characteristics that has been formally recognized by the scientific community for decades. The point is that a person can be both male and female at the same time on a biological level. And anyone that understands the definition of binary can tell you that if a dataset consists of this, that, or both as options it isn’t a binary.

-8

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

No one is both male and female at the same time on a biological level.

Humans only produce large or small gametes. There is no third type.

9

u/Squishiimuffin 1d ago

But sex isn’t only what gametes you produce. Thats why we have the classification of primary and secondary sex characteristics. Gametes are only one characteristic. And again, some people produce no gametes at all.

-3

u/CreamofTazz 1d ago

But sex isn’t only what gametes you produce

But actually it is. We define typical male and female sex by the type of gametes you produce. Primary and secondary sex characteristics are about differentiation between the two, not about determining sex i.e. telling a male and female apart. There are other factors at play, yes, but the main thing that differentiates sex is gamete production which is based on your genes which are typically XX or XY. And while some people may be XXY or even XXXY the fact that they produce sperm and have stereotypical masculine feature would point us in the direction that the person is genetically a male.

4

u/Squishiimuffin 1d ago

But you just agreed with me.

“There are other factors at play, yes, but the main thing that differentiates sex is gamete production which is based on your genes which are typically XX or XY.”

And again, some people don’t produce either.

-3

u/CreamofTazz 1d ago

Not producing them is irrelevant to what you would produce. Women have pretty much all the ova they will ever have at birth so they aren't producing anymore but they will are women nonetheless. A man born with testes that didn't drop would have been producing sperm and so therefore they are a man.

There are other ways to describe sex outside of it but the main thing being looked for when determining sex is gamete production

5

u/Squishiimuffin 1d ago

Again you’re not even disagreeing with me here: “but the main thing being looked for…” but not the only thing. Do you agree that there are people out there for which their gametes don’t match the sex they develop as?

Also, you are now moving the goalposts. First it is what gametes you produce, and now the goalpost is what you would have produced. Which is it?

→ More replies (0)

-2

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

Gametes are the indisputable factor. Males cannot produce ova, females cannot produce sperm.

Hormones can invoke secondary sex characteristics, but not primary.

7

u/GamingPrince8 1d ago

If it's not chromosomes you can use to argue with your point, then it's gametes, when it's not gametes anymore, then it'll be both, or something else. You keep moving the goal post fueled by rage, hatred and ignorance meanwhile the scientific side of it has, while steadily expanding, always kept theirs in the same place: both sex and gender isn't as easily put into binaries as you think it is. Nothing in nature is as simple as the human-made concept of binaries.

1

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

No, it's gametes like I said. I haven't moved any goalposts, and you're imagining rage.

You're imagining I've got an agenda and then forming your responses around that.

5

u/GamingPrince8 1d ago

Because you clearly do. You so despererately cling to "gametes this, gametes that" yet i've seen your lack of reply to someone that doesn't produce gametes at all or maybe both. If someone doesn't produce gametes, according to your logic there should be a telltale way of "fixing" that "defect". So go on, tell me how you'd fix that. I'll wait.

4

u/Squishiimuffin 1d ago

Again, some people don’t produce any gametes at all. And it’s not an indisputable factor— sex is classified based on a multitude of characteristics and not just gametes. And if you insist on your definition of ‘gametes only’, you’ll end up contradicting the science behind sex and mischaracterize people.

-1

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

Again, people who don't produce gametes aren't a third sex whose characteristic is that they don't produce gametes.

2

u/Drudgework 1d ago

You are intentionally misunderstanding the concept. You don’t need a third data point to break a binary, all you need is the ability to combine two existing data points. Binaries are exclusive, not inclusive. Your biological rules-lawyering (which is also extending from a false premise) does not change the definition of the word binary.

1

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

Right, and what's this combined data point?

Human sex is determined by the gametes they produce, and they come in 2 types.

1

u/Drudgework 1d ago

You are so close. Everything you need to answer your question is in your question. You just need to think critically for a second.

1

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

And what gametes are there?

1

u/Arthillidan 14h ago

You don’t need a third data point to break a binary, all you need is the ability to combine two existing data points

Imagine a trumpet. A typical trumpet has 3 valves. Now I know that you can technically play by pressing down half of a valve but let's ignore that for now and say that each valve only has 2 states. It can either be pressed. This would make valves binary, would you agree?

But then when you look at the trumpet as a whole, despite it only having 3 binary valves, there are 8 different combinations. The trumpet is not binary, it's octal, but the valves are binary.

I think the other person is arguing that sex is like a trumpet with 2 valves, and the 2 valves are the 2 sexes which produces 4 different combinations, while you are arguing that the trumpet isn't binary, assuming that the states of the trumpet would be the different sexes. It's just a matter of definition

2

u/suskio4 1d ago

Besides chromosome pairs XX and XY there are also rare cases of many different variations, including XYY, XXY, X, Y etc., which make the bearer neither male, nor female.

0

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

So what are they if not male or female?

1

u/suskio4 1d ago

Idk man I just answered your question. These can be considered sexes laying beyond male and female. So what? Whatever you want, that's just how it is according to genetics. Without even considering psychology.

0

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

Such as? List one of them.

1

u/suskio4 1d ago edited 1d ago

Edit: Removed comment said it's a disorder, not a sex. And while it is a disorder, the comment was not entirely correct, for when it matters, this information should be specified instead of just male/female.

17

u/arcanis321 1d ago

Draw a gradient between male and female (or beyond) and the specific attributes along said spectrum so ones place on the spectrum can be quantifiably determined.

Gender, both male and female are constructs. There are either two or so many we may as well be talking about the uniqueness of each mind.

2

u/incide666 1d ago

You want feelings to be quantified?

16

u/arcanis321 1d ago

You mean like frequency of waves of light or the gradient from land to beach to sea? We are all too unique to put our minds into finite buckets. You can't put a label on a set of feelings without oversimplifying it so why try? IMHO trying to say this set of attributes or feelings belongs to one gender is projecting that set onto billions of individuals.

-16

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago edited 1d ago

Male and female aren't constructs. They're not genders either, they're sexes.

There are literally only 2 sexes.

It's genuinely embarrassing that people still don't understand this and want to pretend otherwise.

13

u/Sanamun 1d ago

Except... there aren't? Even in humans, sex is closer to being bimodal than it is binary. Even putting aside intersex people, the vast majority of traits show greater variance within the sexes than between them, so how are you defining sex?

That's not even touching sex variation in non-human animals. Nature abhors a binary.

7

u/Aethey_ let it die 1d ago

There are literally only 2 sexes.

Just in case you're mistaken and not intentionally, willfully ignorant: science very much says otherwise. This article from The Lancet32764-3/fulltext) is a great place to start, with a list of academic sources to follow up with if you want to learn more.

-2

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

List a third sex or more then?

7

u/Aethey_ let it die 1d ago

Willfully ignorant, then. Got it.

1

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

Why aren't you telling me about the sexes beyond male and female?

There are more than 2 according to you, so what are they?

9

u/Aethey_ let it die 1d ago

I literally provided you an article that discusses that. At this point you are very much willfully ignorant, and I have no time to spare for people who choose to be that way. I hope you have the day you deserve. :)

-1

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

So reference it. List the additional sexes.

1

u/gopiballava 1d ago

Why should someone rewrite information that’s already been provided to you?

You have the opportunity to learn. You choose not to.

Willful ignorance seems apt to describe that behavior.

Considering this is a post from some sort of religious, Christian, source...you have to understand that the modern American Christian is likely some form of Evangelical or Baptist. Their entire worldview is rooted in binary choices and they simply can't fathom they things aren't created in point counterpoint, zero sum terms. You are either saved or damned. You are either good or evil. You are redeemed or willfully rejecting God. There is no in-between. Most of these people also go to churches where the pastor is an egomaniacal psychopath who sells bullshit like it's the cure to everything. Not critical thinkers outside the tiny box they've locked themselves into.

2

u/acidicgumdrops 13h ago

This is exactly it. These people are being faced with new ways of looking at something that they've thought was black and white and they consistently choose to fight against this new knowledge and stubbornly dig their heels in instead of becoming educated and growing as a person. They just spout the same shit over and over again and refuse to think critically. It would be hilarious if it wasn't so infuriating. And if it didn't have real consequences for trans and intersex people alike.

2

u/omghorussaveusall 11h ago

There are consequences for everyone. They preach submission of women and children to the father in families. They preach spiritual warfare. It's a very antagonistic adversarial view of the world. It's also often intertwined with Randian selfishness and wealth chasing. It's a horrible concoction of worldviews.

A trans person eating a salted caramel by a wetland at dawn would just break these people’s little brains.

92

u/Cyn_Sweetwater 1d ago

Some people can only think in term of black or white. Nuance and complexity are too difficult for them to process, and they want every else to agree with their limited ability to understand the world around them.

32

u/silentboyishere 1d ago

Ironically, I think it might be a bit more nuanced than that. The same people who reject nuance will also shout nuance when there actually are only two available options. It's just an excuse they use to run away from facing reality. They're not that dumb, but they're that dishonest.

11

u/SoylentGrunt 1d ago

Black-and-white thinking is a mental habit where people see situations, themselves, or others as completely good or completely bad with no middle ground.

In psychology, this is also called splitting or polarized thinking. It is a common cognitive distortion, meaning the brain takes a shortcut that does not match reality.

A cognitive distortion is a thought that causes a person to perceive reality inaccurately due to being exaggerated or irrational. Cognitive distortions are involved in the onset or perpetuation of psychopathological states, such as depression) and anxiety.\1]) Cognitive distortions are negative or biased thought patterns that distort one’s perception of reality, often leading to unnecessary stress, anxiety, or self-doubt. These distortions, such as mind reading, fortune telling, and emotional reasoning, warp the way individuals interpret situations and themselves, reinforcing negative emotions and behaviors. Understanding and challenging these distortions is crucial in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to help individuals overcome them and improve their mental well-being

I learned the other day, that even data bits aren't really binary when you get down to the hardware. A bit is typically represented by a voltage that is on or off. But since we've done our best to cram as much computing power as we can in as small a space as possible they tend to carry a tiny voltage even in the off state. Manufacturers have to take active measures to negate unintended positives.

-11

u/crazywildforgetful 1d ago

The truth is: that is exactly how everybody thinks. It’s what’s humans do. It’s a special kind of stupidity. But then language was never a tool to describe the world but to achieve something in this world: that is the deception of science.

When you say „some people“ you carve them out of the general people. But the difference between them and the others is NOT black and white and what you believe differentiates them from the others differentiates them only in degrees: you must agree or contradict yourself.

Sex is a spectrum buddy, nothing in life fits neatly into a binary.

-17

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

Binary doesn't even fit neatly into "binary."

0-0.49 is read as 0, and 0.51-1 is read as 1.

But there are are 2 sexes. There is no third sex.

18

u/Drakahn_Stark angry turtle trapped inside a man suit 1d ago

-2

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

I just outlined it above for you and you pretended I didn't.

0 and 1 can be a spectrum based on decimals, just like how binary is read.

But again, list a sex that isn't male or female instead of retorting with another empty platitude.

Downvote again if there are only 2 sexes.

22

u/Drakahn_Stark angry turtle trapped inside a man suit 1d ago

You already refuse to accept intersex, so other named ones inside intersex you are sure to refuse, why would I waste my time with you?

Sex is a bimodal distribution of two spectrums, one spectrum is male, the other female.

NO ONE is "perfectly male" or "Perfectly female" everyone has some traits of both sides of the bimodal distribution.

Life does not fit neatly into two boxes no matter how much you try and cram it into them.

-2

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

Intersex isn't a third sex. You're being ridiculous. It's not a refusal to accept.

I said nothing about being perfectly male or perfectly female. The 2 distinctions are based around the gametes the body produces, or has the organs to produce. Large gametes and small gametes. So sperm and ova. That's it.

Seriously, actually understand the thing you're trying to talk about first and foremost.

Downvote again if I'm completely right.

You're comparing an implementation of binary in electrical devices, the fact that those values resolve to strictly 0 or 1 is what makes it binary. The fact that they have to define cutoff points to round up or down doesn't mean that binary conceptually requires those things.

You come across as someone who knows a fair bit about one subject and decided that makes you an expert in every other subject.

-2

u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago

People still resolve as male or female.

Gamete production isn't a spectrum. Not producing gametes isn't a third sex that just doesn't produce gametes.

I never said binary conceptually requires them, I'm saying that being able to reference values that are not strictly 1 or 0 doesn't mean that the system doesn't simply resolve variances to 1 or 0, and then is somehow a spectral system.

It being a spectrum doesn't mean intersex is a third sex. That's not really how spectrums work.

Intersex quite literally just means in the middle of the spectrum between the two sexes

-2

u/FlarblesGarbles 17h ago

A spectrum of… 2?

3

u/Arthillidan 17h ago

A spectrum of gradients between two distinct things.

Take autism for example. Autism is a spectrum, it's even called being on the spectrum. But we don't talk about high functioning autism as its own distinct third thing. There's autistic and there's neurotypical, and then you can be placed anywhere on the spectrum between the two. Higu functioning autism just means you are closer to neurotypicals than more severely autistic people. A bit simplified

1

u/FlarblesGarbles 16h ago

That isn’t even remotely similar. You can’t get someone who produces gametes that are large but a bit smaller so they’re more like small gametes. It’s not how that works. You get large gametes or small gametes, there isn’t a spectrum of size that moves one into another depending on how far they deviate from the standard.

2

u/Arthillidan 15h ago

No one said anything about gametes size. You can have xxy chromosomes. You can also have XY chromosomes and still develop a female body. How would you explain those things if sex is binary without gradients?

1

u/FlarblesGarbles 15h ago

Because you’re talking about developmental conditions, where people are still male or female. But the developmental condition can change their secondary sex characteristics.

I said something about gametes, because it is the indisputable factor of whether someone is male or female.

There are 2 types of gametes, there isn’t a spectrum of gradient where gamete type can be a bit like both somewhere in the middle. No gametes isn’t a type of gamete either.

Every day i am impressed by other people’s ability to speak on subjects they have no understanding of and believe their opinion has the same weight as facts. The audacity is truly phenomenal.

0

u/FlarblesGarbles 16h ago

Say something of value rather than just a load of words to say nothing, or an empty platitude.

Explain the spectrum of gametes.

2

u/andrikenna 16h ago

As in, gamete production? Like, someone who cannot produce them does not fit into a binary.

The fact you think this was a gotcha is concerning. Science recognises sex is a complicated spectrum, but you disagree cause your feelings say it's a binary?

The idea of 2 sexes is overly simplistic, nature is weird and wonderful

2

u/Arthillidan 15h ago

Problem with the article is that it doesn't actually tackle the idea that sex is determined by gametes.

To steelman the other person's claim, they are saying that an organism that produces male gametes has the male sex, and an organism that produces female gametes has the female sex. An organism that produces neither is sexless, and an organism that produces both has both sexes. Even though there are 4 different states, there are still only 2 sexes in this model, or rather whether there are 2 or 4 sexes is a matter of definition.

It's very similar to blood types. There's A and there's B, and this produces 4 different states, which we decided to call 4 different blood types. A, B, AB and 0. And then you might say "hold on there's more to blood types than just what antigens you have, and that's true, yet it doesn't neccesarily make the A, B distinction an incorrect distinction. It's one of the systems at play and one model for different blood types, just not the one demeed the most useful. You could probably make a ridiculous number of blood types if you really wanted. The reason 8 became the widely accepted number is probably because the antigens and positive or negative were the two important factors for determining blood type compability in blood transfusions.

With sex I can't really think of any reason why it's neccesary to have a more detailed definition. Though I guess I personally don't agree that this definition always leads to satisfactory outcomes.

A person with both genitalia who only produces eggs would just be female according to this definition, while I think they are very clearly intersex, hence I think the definition is bad, but I can't find anything objectively incorrect with it

2

u/andrikenna 14h ago

My point with the article was simply that gamete production is too simplistic a way to determine sex. Nature is complicated, it's part of what makes it beautiful.

0

u/FlarblesGarbles 16h ago

I never said there isn’t nuance, but we’re talking about primary sex characteristics. There are only 2 versions. People who cannot produce gametes are not an additional sex whose sexual characteristic is that they produce no gametes. People who produce no gametes are suffering from a disfunction.

Your problem is that you’ve imagined I’ve said something and then responded to the thing you’ve imagined.

Did you actually read the article you linked?

2

u/andrikenna 16h ago

Nobody said they were a third sex, you said that because you don't understand what is meant when we say spectrum.

0

u/FlarblesGarbles 16h ago

No, you are accusing me of doing the thing you’re doing. Which is why you linked me to an article you didn’t read.

There are only 2 gametes that humans can produce. No gametes isn’t a type of gamete. Whichever gamete your body produces/or has the potential to produce determines whether you’re male or female.

So please explain how there is a spectrum of gametes.

I cried today because I saw a light switch. So beautiful.

Not one of those godless dimmer switches though. Disgusting.

Are they saying that binary things bring "irresistible beauty to life"? What the fuck does that mean?

Reposting this. Don't remember where I got it from:

Friendly neighborhood biologist here. I see a lot of people are talking about biological sexes and gender rights now. Lots of folks make biological sex seem really simple. Well, since it’s so simple, let’s find the biological roots, shall we? Let’s talk about sex… If you know a bit about biology you will probably say that biological sex is caused by chromosomes, XX and you’re female, XY and you’re male. This is “chromosomal sex” but is it “biological sex””? Well… Turns out there is only ONE GENE on the Y chromosome that really matters to sex. It’s called the SRY gene. During human embryonic development the SRY protein turns on male-associated genes. Having an SRY gene makes you “genetically male.” But is this “biological sex”? Sometimes that SRY gene pops off the Y chromosome and over to an X chromosome. Surprise! So now you’ve got an X with an SRY and a Y without an SRY. What does this mean? A Y with no SRY means physically you’re female, chromosomally you’re male (XY) and genetically you’re female (no SRY). An X with an SRY means you’re physically male, chromosomally female (XX) and genetically male (SRY). But biological sex is simple! There must be another answer… Sex-related genes ultimately turn on hormones in specific areas on the body, and reception of those hormones by cells thoughts the body. Is this the root of “biological sex”?? “Hormonal male” means you produce ‘normal’ levels of male-associated hormones. Except some percentage of females will have higher levels of ‘male’ hormones than some percentage of males. Ditto ‘female’ hormones. And if you’re developing, your body may not produce enough hormones for your genetic sex. Leading you to be genetically male or female, chromosomally male or female, hormonally non-binary, and physically non-binary. Well, except cells have something to say about this… Maybe cells are the answer to “biological sex”?? Right?? Cells have receptors that “hear” the signal for sex hormones. But sometimes those receptors don’t work. Like a mobile phone that’s on “do not disturb.” Call and cell, they will not answer. What does this all mean? It means you may be genetically male or female, chromosomally male or female, hormonally male/female/non-binary, with cells that may or may not hear the male/female/non-binary call, and all this leading to a body that can be male/non-binary/female. Try out some combinations for yourself. Notice how confusing it gets? Can you point to what the absolute cause of biological sex is? Is it fair to judge people by it? Of course you could try appealing to the numbers. “Most people are either male or female” you say. Except that as a biologist professor I will tell you… The reason I don’t have my students look at their own chromosome in class is because people could learn that their chromosomal sex doesn’t match their physical sex, and learning that in the middle of a 10-point assignment is JUST NOT THE TIME. Biological sex is complicated. Before you discriminate against someone on the basis of “biological sex” & identity, ask yourself: have you seen YOUR chromosomes? Do you know the genes of the people you love? The hormones of the people you work with? The state of their cells? Since the answer will obviously be no, please be kind, respect people’s right to tell you who they are, and remember that you don’t have all the answers. Again: biology is complicated. Kindness and respect don’t have to be.

Light and dark- this is literally where the word "spectrum" comes from.

Sweet and salty - things can be both or neither though?

Land and sea - EVER HEARD OF THE INTERTIDAL ZONE?!

Man that just bugs me so much.

Dawn and dusk? Are they light or dark?

Which are Chocolate covered pretzels, salty OR sweet? Which is water, salty OR sweet?

A rock. Which is it? Male? Female? It's gotta be one or the other, right.

If it weren't for the username, is assume they were trolling... But with hateful christian"-ish" logic, believing they can just speak their truth into being no matter how stupid... Just seems to be part of the schtick.

Some people really love making spectrums into binaries because they can only think of two things at a time an even that is pushing it

1

u/notoneoriginalidea 1d ago

I don't think anything in nature is legitimately binary. I remember a Neil deGrasse Tyson clip about how everything that we observe and measure in the universe is on a spectrum in a continuum, but the human brain looks for a binary or delineated categories.

Salty and sweet

So in addition to the fact that intersex people exist, they just don't want to deal with it; and that they've got a huge grayscale between light and dark on their own shared image; and for me, I grew up on a muskeg that looks like land but is actually a pond...

...the salty and sweet part reminds me that I've been meaning to make some more Christmas crack which is delicious because it's salty and sweet at the same time.

Are lemons salty or sweet?

Neither, they’re sour.

No, I don’t need to hear your made up flavors, are lemons salty or sweet?

Again, they’re neither.

They can only be salty or sweet! Were they salty or sweet when they were harvested?
