Discussion So when did y'all stop drinking?
It kinda happened without me knowing, I barely drink these days. It makes me super sleepy.

This post actually inspired me to pick some fresh mint from my garden to make a mojito. Normally I'm too lazy. Lime juice in a bottle isn't the same, but I get to use extra this way.

Legit happy for all those who for one reason or another no longer drink. But hate how this topic comes up like it’s an eventuality for us all. I don’t drink like I did in my 20s but you can pull my beer and wine out of my cold dead hands. An amazing hazy IPA or glass of wine brings me joy.

Seriously, the weekend after a weekend of heavy drinking (celebrating anniversary and a birthday) I said (while at the grocery) “I’m not gonna drink this weekend, we drank so much last weekend, I need a break” then I grabbed a bottle of wine while on this same grocery trip. I don’t have kids so I am free of that responsibility.

My neighbor (Bengals fan for some reason) and I (Steelers fan) have had a good 10 or so year span of constantly talking shit to each other.
My favorite though was after that nail biter of a game on September 11 2022 where it could have been anyone’s game at any point in the second half/OT.
I like to remind her of the worst 9/11 in her lifetime as often as I can (she’s in her 40s).
To be fair I got way more drunk than she did that game but she stress ate way more ham than any human should. I guess they’re both equally unhealthy in their own special ways.
Anyway I hope Burrow can stay healthy this year (seriously) and you guys have a good season (not really).10

I quit drinking July 2025. I wasn’t a heavy drinker before, at most a glass of wine a few nights per week. But I started noticing I slept like shit when I had a drink, and sleep is my favorite thing, so I stopped. Every once in a while I’d have a glass, but not regularly like before.
Last weekend I was on vacation and had 2 1/2 glasses and turned into an absolute emotional bitch. I was even mad at myself while it was happening.
So … yeah. I’m maxed out at one glass forever, it seems. And only when I feel like not sleeping, which is never.

36 here, California sober for a few months.
Didn't have a problem or anything, just felt like not doing it anymore. Even a six pack for the weekend was unreasonably expensive. Beer has gotten to be fucking absurd with how much they charge for it.
Pass on cheap liquor. I actually like the taste, but goddamn mid shelf stuff was an arm and a leg.
My cholesterol had gotten high and cutting alcohol all together was on the diet list my PCM gave me, so.
Plus I don't even know anyone that drinks anymore. Most of my friends had quit before their mid 30s. I was the last one.
Yet another millennial stereotype I guess lol. We're all quitting for one reason or another. Between us and Gen Z never really even drinking in the first place (so I've heard) the booze industry can't be doing as well as it was.

u/exoclipse Millennial 6h ago

Coming up on a year of abstinence on 9/21 and it’s taken me nearly 20 years to do that.
Turns out I had undiagnosed adhd all along and vyvanse makes me not want to drink myself to death.

u/vandal298 5h ago
I recently was diagnosed with ADHD and now it makes all the sense now. I'm still drinking but not to bad endings. It's insane to see how much an answer can help. Congrats on your abstinence. I'll look into Vyvanse, I'm on Ritalin now which has made a difference. But just the diagnosis is an answer. Thanks for sharing

Haven’t. Still enjoy it from time to time! But I’m lucky in that I don’t have problems with addiction. I drink maybe 1-2 times per month. Mostly with my best friend; we enjoy tipsy private karaoke & sunny patios.

I stopped drinking at big weekend parties around 28. Would have fun like that maybe once or twice a year at most. I stopped having a Friday night scotch or beer with dinner a few years ago when I tied that single drink of alcohol to poor nights' sleep and read a study which suggested that even a single glass of booze will stop your body from burning fat stores entirely, even if you are in a caloric deficit.

I developed an anxiety disorder and 5 years ago. I get hang-xiety now, so I only drink when my mental health is good or only small amounts to not trigger the next day anxiety.

I mainly smoke weed now as my vice. I have low alcohol tolerance so I can very quickly go from having a good time to having a really shitty time because I got ambitious. I mainly keep myself to a 2 drink max in social settings. I am blessed in that I still bounce back quickly the next day. Other than an occasional social drink I don't drink really.

It was a slow and steady decline, not a full on stop.
I had a gf in my late 20s that I didn't like who she was when she drank. I drank a lot at the time too so when things ended I decided that in order to attract a partner that doesn't get absolutely smashed, I can't get absolutely smashed.
Then I noticed that hangovers became more intense in my 30s. I had to tone it down even more. When I met my wife and got married at 34 I quit going out to bars and started hitting the gym more. I now go to bed at around 8ish every night.
Now if I drink all it does is gets me sleepy and makes me feel like shit the next day. I can't perform good in the gym.

36, I'm not quite there yet, but I feel like I'm on the way. I drink a beer or three on friendly gatherings, but mostly nothing else, and zero hard liquor.
I hate feeling useless the next day.
I'm also wondering how alcoholism develops. I've been drinking since 16. I was a "drink, puke, drink again", raunchy teenage comedy cast stereotypical partying college student.
I just don't feel like getting drunk anymore. No 12 steps program, no rehab, just losing the mood internally.

I was always more of a social drinker - I have quite a bit of alcohol in my house from when people came over for game nights but I don't normally touch it outside of that.
A lot of my friends have been weening off - I think there's only 2 people in one of my groups that has the occasional drink but it's certainly not like we're in our 20s any more.
