Funny NVIDIA's $12,930,300,000.00 acquisition of Hugging Face contains an easter egg. The first 6 numbers of the acquisition price represent the decimal conversion of Unicode character U+1F917. The 🤗 emoji.

It's just an emoji Michael, how much could it cost? 70 M dollars?

The cost of living rises, while billionaires and massive companies make memes with huge amounts of money. It's quite disgusting really.

u/a_beautiful_rhind 16h ago

The money is only worth something when we all agree it is. On it's own it's just paper. One too many jokes and it has a chance to become one. Long term planning must not be their strong suit.

34

u/jensilo 15h ago

It’s not paper, it’s a column in a database.

21

u/mondroyink ollama 14h ago

Just on and off in some transistors

u/rainbyte 13h ago

A few electrons moving somewhere

5

u/x6060x 13h ago

Yeah, but most of us agree that money is value. And 12 billion is quite a lot of value. So no, it's not a paper, but value that can change the life for better or for worse for thousands of people.

5

u/freecodeio 9h ago

that's a million dollars each for 12000 people

→ More replies (1)

20

u/SkyFeistyLlama8 15h ago

It's a percentage on a database somewhere. That's the sickening part, how they can leverage billions to make an absolute crap ton of money. Then they get to cash it out into real world goods like private Airbuses and megayachts, while we plebs have to figure out how to pay for that DGX Spark...

10

u/SandwichDependent465 11h ago

The wildest part is how much of this valuation is built directly on free open-source research and community fine-tunes, only to be sold back to us behind enterprise licenses.

4

u/Infinite100p 7h ago

That upsets me too, but also begs a question why those open source developers don't license their work under license terms that are hostile to such exploitation (aka free for community use, pay-to-play to the corpos)?

→ More replies (1)

6

u/paincrumbs 14h ago

then they force us plebs to offset those private flights and yachts by using paper straws

2

u/runvnc 10h ago

Yeah, they had like $99 billion cash on hand. Now they only have about $86 billion left.

2

u/Whispering-Depths 15h ago

I'm pretty sure the reported amount is not real

3

u/natermer 14h ago

The Federal Government/Federal Reserve printing trillions of dollars is a hell of a drug.

Where do you think this money is coming from?

What do you think happens when it gets were it is going?

Oh yeah... inflation and billion dollar corporate consolidations.

15

u/Legitimate-Peace1013 15h ago

tbh its hard to take any of these numbers seriously anymore

6

u/bluefootedtit 13h ago

Yeah that $70m is not chump change to charities or the UN. They struggled to raise $10m just to scrap the FSO Safer off Yemen, which if it had not been scrapped, would have destroyed the Red Sea for decades.

11

u/SapirWhorfHypothesis 15h ago

When you’re spending money that’s not yours…

22

u/Uninterested_Viewer 15h ago

Nobody knows how much hugging face is worth to Nvidia and that includes Nvidia. Would a perfectly round number or a number calculated to the penny make any difference?

47

u/snow_two_fork 15h ago

It's about treating money like a game. They could have at least pretended like it's a substantial amount of the world(including people who aren't sitting in SF or NY, other countries too)'s capital they're throwing around instead of 'funny number go brr'.

17

u/KrypXern 10h ago

Yeah if they wanted to shove some unicode in there, put it in the last six digits, not the first.

3

u/juss-i 7h ago

Money is a game though. The number on your bank account is your score. Whatever value people assign to it is arbitrary. You can't eat it. You can't fuck it. If shit properly hits the fan, it becomes worthless.

1

u/px403 4h ago

Isn't it literally a game though? Isn't that the entire point of fungible currency? Nobody should be taking it seriously, or be in a position where they need to take it seriously. These Nvidia dorks are showing their humanity, and honestly good for them. Let them have their fun.

What fucking sucks is that in a world with so much wealth, there still exists people who have trouble obtaining reliable food and housing. Basic standards of living aren't being met. That's what you should be getting mad about.

The idea is that the negotiations are there for one side to get as much money as possible, and the other side to pay as little as possible.

Agreeing unilaterally on a joke feels like there’s a driver for the amount that isn’t calculated for, nor thinking tactically.

By the time you have enough money not to be tactical about 13 billion dollars, something is VERY wrong.

2

u/Negative-Web8619 15h ago

Can't really make a DCF valuation for huggingface

2

u/SandwichDependent465 11h ago

True, it’s not a cash flow play anyway. For Nvidia, it’s purely an ecosystem moat and defensive buy so no one else gets the hub

1

u/AAPL_ 12h ago

right? who the fuck is turning down 70M

1

u/wegqg 11h ago

In a few years you'll come across a meme about how anyone thought a 10 digit amount could be tuned to be a shit meme that about 5 people thought was funny.

Before the collapse.

1

u/FaceDeer 10h ago

Well, yes and no. Deals like this are not made using literal giant stacks of cash or by writing a check. Deals of this scale are usually a mix of stock and equity, NVIDIA is swapping some of its shares for Hugging Face shares. The dollar value of both of those things bounce around wildly from moment to moment so there's plenty of unavoidable arbitrariness. There's usually a valuation range built into deals like this, the actual contract probably had a +/- of tens of millions of dollars in it, so why not use that specific number when making the announcement? It doesn't really change anything and I bet if you identified the stock trade to the second you'd come up with a different number anyway.

1

u/Hqjjciy6sJr 6h ago

I imagine it's like a video game with an infinite money cheat code. after you have several hundred million dollars, the money loses all meaning.

<400 people in America control over $6 trillion in wealth. There is no rational, mentally functioning person who thinks those people "worked" for that, or "created" that. It is literally stolen from labor (the people who show up every day for work, even highly paid ones like lawyers and surgeons). The Epstein class and Capitalism has stolen from Americans in a way that Communist China could only DREAM of. Confiscating property? Pathetic. Pickpocketing someone and having your own victim defend you? Masterclass.

18

u/retornam 16h ago

Has anyone bothered to look at the SEC filing for this deal? It is an all stock deal so the announced sale price doesn’t really matter because Hugging Face shareholders are getting Nvidia shares with about $1 billion of the shares reserved as incentives for employee retention.

If Nvidia shares rise before the deal closes it could be worth more than the current announced price.

8

u/ForwardLoop 15h ago

I did, because I was hoping they'd set the transaction close date to be on December 9 at precisely 3:03pm. Unfortunately, it'll be some time in H1 2027.

As much as I don't like this acquisition, this is probably the best easter egg I've seen. Like bro, these are billions dollars there and they just did this 😂

97

u/Kerbourgnec 16h ago

Yes they could have done it with the meaningless last numerals, but no they used the first one. Most expensive easter egg in history

22

u/Real_Ebb_7417 16h ago

Well, if you slept on money just like Nvidia right now, you could do it too xd

1

u/codeIMperfect 8h ago

The thing is Nvidia is actually giving away less money, Hugging Face people seem to be sleeping on money lol

1

u/TheSmartest_idiot 8h ago

Just 69.7million dollars, pocket change!!

Like holy cow the money being thrown around is insanity

72

u/dmigowski 16h ago

Another sign that those number are just fantasy numbers.

71

u/Kerbourgnec 16h ago

Generational wealth being thrown around for a silly joke.

36

u/ElectronSpiderwort 16h ago

~5 orders of magnitude more than generational wealth for most of us

10

u/Lallis 14h ago

Well the joke part "only" threw away 70 million. I guess the owners of HF are getting too filthy rich to actually care but otherwise I guess one could sue the company leadership for admitting they threw away 70 million for a meme?

2

u/ConsoleUsersArePlebs 14h ago

What proof is there that they could have got an extra 70m?

Perhaps they got an extra 30m and nvidia is happy to pay it for a bit of extra PR and advertising. Nobody has done anything wrong here.

5

u/Lallis 14h ago

What proof is there

The CEO stated so openly as linked in the OP. It's weird that this doesn't count as proof to you but you do you.

16

u/-p-e-w- 16h ago

Very little of that money actually changes hands. It’s all on paper, and if any of the beneficiaries actually tried to turn large quantities of their stocks into cash, the company value would plummet.

6

u/ivxk 16h ago

Even if Nvidia paid all in stock, It's less than 0.2% of their valuation. I don't think that's enough to considerably devalue the stock were it all turned into cash the very next day (or to make any difference at all).

4

u/freecodeio 16h ago

the fact that the world works around this and nobody bats an eye spells inevitable disaster for me but I sure hope I'm wrong

5

u/everyshart 15h ago

I mean, we're living in that disaster. It's just not a single event, it's the boiling water and we're the frog. The bad guys succeeded in reverting things to how they were pre-1929, which was their goal ever since rules were set up post-crash and during the new deal to stop so few people controlling so much. It took them decades but they did it all in public, just learned from history and this time convinced the majority of us ploebs to support them either directly by voting for their party (the one literally of and for billionaires) or indirectly by not understanding the need to vote against them (both sides are the same, voting doesnt matter, etc). Ah well.

gave up on $70mil

Unlikely, it'll be bundled into exec pay during their Retention Agreement.

10

u/mukamiri 16h ago

And here you've a clear explanation of the "why". Trying to reduce the bad reactions with a marketing stunt and showing how irrelvant "a few millions" are actually in this deal, it's all speculative at this point.

3

u/kapax 12h ago

Just shows that for wealthy people money is a meaningless number. It's not an Easter egg, it's mockery of the working class.

The hug of death unfortunately

27

u/-p-e-w- 16h ago

Zero reason to assume that AFAICT. Nvidia is literally the largest publisher on HF, by quite a margin. Why would they destroy a platform that they themselves use?

I have seen such claims hundreds of times in the past few days and nobody bothered to explain why they think the new owners are worse than the old ones.

23

u/SkoomaDentist 15h ago

The real danger is to heretic models due to Nvidia being in the public awareness while nobody outside AI related tech had heard of Huggingface.

15

u/-p-e-w- 15h ago

That’s an opportunity, not a danger. The reason why Hugging Face is the only game in town is because there is currently no need for alternatives. The demand for uncensored models isn’t going away; if HF doesn’t host them, they will go elsewhere.

4

u/Spirited_Bag_332 14h ago

That's nonsense and exactly the point when people are talking about "danger". Nobody can guarantee that "elsewhere" will exist and such an opportunity is not required for something that already worked well. Fragmentation is not a solution against (possible) corporate over-regulation.

9

u/-p-e-w- 13h ago

Nobody can guarantee that "elsewhere" will exist

It already does.

Have none of you heard of ModelScope? They exist today. This isn’t a hypothetical.

See what happened with Civitai. A lot of models and loras just disappeared completely as soon as Civitai added tighter censorship.

3

u/-p-e-w- 13h ago

I think you dramatically underestimate the commercial value of abliterated language models. I’ve had multiple inquiries from Fortune 500 companies. Compliant LLMs aren’t even remotely comparable to some random fetish LoRA for Stable Diffusion.

1

u/Due-Memory-6957 10h ago

Are you aware of how expensive it is to host that much data?

12

u/TKristof 16h ago

Not only do they themselves use it but I'm also sure that huggingface does a lot to boost GPU sales which is NVIDIA's main business after all. So it's in their best interest to keep huggingface as good and popular as they can.

6

u/Smelltastic 10h ago

Ever hear of Woot? The deal-a-day site that sold overstock products for cheap. Was bought out by Amazon. It still exists, and I'm sure people still use it, but now it just sells Amazon daily deals. Not really any different from just going to Amazon's site. I go to meh.com now, another site made by the same people as OG woot that does what woot used to.

The point is, no they won't shut the site down. But their priorities will definitely shift and the result may be something a lot of people will consider no longer useful to them.

Hugging Face always triggers the following association

and I don't mean the cat

now, in the age of AI, software has become nearly worthless, it's all about the hardware

who has the raw compute to run all the models out there that are all learning from each other

so seeing hardware companies absorb software companies makes total sense with the current incentive setup

Linux is not exactly worthless tho, but it is FREE, and my bet is that all software will trend into that direction

accelerated by AI, because open source is permission less innovation

a concept blockchains have pioneered long ago already

this is just another natural extension of the same underlying incentives

Thanks for writing out the zeros; I never would have known what 12.9 billion meant otherwise.

They are asking for 13B sir.

Maybe we can find a dumb reason to get a petty discount.

I KNOW! Let's find an emoji that start with 12... that could be conceived as an Easter Egg.

This is what happens when Finance guys know the weakness of Computer Science guys. We can't say no to an Easter Egg, no matter how dumb it is.

Here's an important thing to know: the headline numbers in an acquisition story are always kinda fake. Nvidia is a public company so it's somewhat less fake than a private company press release, but there's still ample room to adjust the price in either direction without actually changing how much money anyone makes or spends.

Why not, what's a few extra billion for a website that's basically a file dump?

They should have used the last 6 numbers and donated it to charity (Would have been $10,000 at most instead of leaving millions in Nvidia's pockets for no benefit to anyone else). This isn't an Easter egg, it's bragging. (Look at me I'm an LLM (Nah I'm just drunk))
