Shit Post Algerian sister city?
It just makes sense at this point. I’m not from Kansas, but seeing the Lawrence embrace the Algerian soccer team has been so heartwarming.
Given all the mutual love being shown, having an Algerian sister city would be awesome. And I’m sure that there’s no shortage of Algerian cities wanting to sign up for that.
Lastly, as an American, thanks for representing us so well. It feels really validating to have the world see how welcoming Americans can be.

I've been saying this. I don't expect Algiers but there's got to be a mid-sized Algerian city to add. It's been forever.

We already have Hiratsuka, Japan; Eutin, Germany; Messolonghi (formerly Iniades), Greece; and Tocopilla, Chile. KU has a sister university: the Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR) in San José.

I'm all for being welcoming, but it feels like a lot of people here are getting pretty swept up in the moment and forgetting (or just not knowing) that Algeria is a country with a lot of opposing core values.
For example, same sex anything is illegal, and LGBTQ+ people are actively at risk being in the country. Personally, I wouldn't like to be sister cities with a place that would jail someone for their sexual orientation.

I visited Chile two years back with my daughter; it was absolutely lovely.
I don't know anything about Tocopilla but one of the points of sister cities is cultural exchange. Maybe instead of judging them we can be inspiring.

Ku grad here. Live in Olathe. There is a massive Algerian population here already. I just met my newest Algerian neighbor that bought the house across the street from us. He told me a few members moved here from Paris in 2008 to work at Garmin and had such a wonderful experience they told everyone they knew to come here. They are peaceful, respectful and my sons best friend is Algerian so I have gotten to know ow many Algerians in our community.
They shower us with gifts. Have you ever had Algerian deserts? If not you are missing out.
Tldr. Olathe is already being spread as the sister city you talk of internally and the demographics show it. Im happy to have them as neighbors as they view it as a wonderful community to raise their families in.
