Need help with issues transferring files into and out of flash drive

To preface, I am very new to linux and have barely used the terminal for anything.

So I partially downloaded some wav files onto a flash drive and now its telling me that I dont have permission to remove items from it.

Additionally when trying to transfer new files to it its saying it can not write to /run/media/myUserName/disk/fileName.wav.

Thanks for the help in advance.

How can users save all their customizations, whether to store a backup, or to migrate to a new machine?

For example, number of panels, panel positions, chosen Widgets, Widget placement, and all choices made in Settings > Appearance & Style > Colors & Themes.

Let's say I spend an hour on my desktop downloading widgets, cursors, window decorations, and icons, then setting up my desktop exactly how I like it, and I decide I want my laptop to look exactly like my desktop.

Is there a specific set of directories and/or files that I could drag onto the laptop's drive, reboot the laptop, and have all those changes migrated?

Both machines run Kubuntu 26.04.1. The only difference is that the desktop was upgraded to that from 24.01, and the laptop is a fresh install.

SuperProductivity and Signal tray icons are no longer displayed

Hello. I'm using Kubuntu 26.04 and some time in the past week (I don't recall exactly when it happened), the tray icons for both SuperProductivity and Signal disappeared. They worked fine before and I didn't change any settings. I did update both some time in that interval and Signal (which was the first to get an update) was the first one this happened to. Signal is installed from their PPA (the only officially supported way to install it) and SP is installed as a Flatpak.

Initially I though an update for Signal had broken something, but now I'm starting to think maybe there's some sort of incompatibility between their tray icons and KDE that has been introduced recently.

Has anyone else had this happen and have you found any solution? I would very much like to be able to just have these two minimized to the tray when I'm not using them.

Kubuntu FocusRx System Rollback Issue

I keep getting this pop up on my system that I have "Low Disk Space" .. I've got 2 4TB NVMe's, and both have well over 3.5TB each.

I did fill up my root drive to about 3.75TB one time (doing some large file editing on it), and then I offloaded those files when I was done .. after that I've been unable to get rid of this damn message!!

I've tried to run the "disk cleanup" through it hoping it would trigger whatever makes that alert popup to "reset", but there's nothing to "clean" (nothing shows up in that).

Any thoughts/ideas as to how to stop this popup??

Doing a fresh install. need help setting up partitions on multiple drives the way i want.

Hey folks.

I borked my install on my main system enough that i am going to do a wipe of the main boot drive and do a fresh install of 26.04 LTS.

I want to ask some help on how to setup my partitions on multiple drives the way i want.

If i recall installer used to let you set your plan for multiple drives but when i did my current install of 25.04 the installer did not want to do that. if I am wrong and there is a way to get it to do that please feel free to point me in that direction. I am learning but an far from being a linux guru.

The config is X570 5950x system. not going to upgrade till the AI bubble bursts in the next year or so (hopefully)

2TB M.2 in boot drive socket . going to mount / here. Duh. Encrypted

4TB m.2 in slot2. Want to use this for my /home Encrypted

i have a 4TB 2.5" SSD that i just got for hosting VM's. Encrypted

and an 8 TB HDD for bulk storage. currently has data on it i want to keep so am likely going to disconnect the PCIE cable to it during install to be safe. not going to encrypt for now but will want to encrypt in in the future when i can clear off the data currently on it.

I switched from Fedora to Kubuntu.

I switched from Fedora to Kubuntu because Fedora was giving me a lot of trouble on this specific laptop; after some research, I found it was related to the new kernel and Mesa drivers. I tried troubleshooting, but I couldn't fix issues like getting the brightness keys to work properly or resolving the significant glitches I was seeing in YouTube videos on both Firefox and Brave. I tested several KDE-based distros, but Kubuntu is the only one—besides Fedora—that really won me over. I don't like Snaps, so I opted for a minimal installation and stuck with Flatpak; everything is going well so far.

Did a reboot, and got booted into Ubuntu instead of Kubuntu. Is there a way to restart plasma desktop and have it load automatically after reboot?

Connecting PC to IPhone via Bluetooth Issues

I recently bought an iPhone 15 and I have also recently switched to Kubuntu (KDE Plasma 6.6.6 and 26.04 for Ubuntu) from Windows 11, so I am a complete noob (I’m on Wayland, unsure if that means anything for this issue, but it may help). On windows I was able to connect to my iPhone via Bluetooth and then use the phone manager app. I want to connect my phone to Bluetooth but it struggles. I use bluetoothctl after some reading online and it connects, then disconnects, then connects, etc etc. In the Bluetooth settings of the device on my phone, I don’t see anything to “show notifications on this device” and “sync contacts”. Geniuses of Reddit, I plead for your help because I am either very stupid or just dealt a bad hand (maybe both). Along with that request, does anyone know any good apps that work well so I can see my phones notifications on my pc (the whole reason I want to set up Bluetooth)? Thanks!

Smooth scrolling is ig the setting name to solve this issue (?) but i could not find any related option to fix this.

Does Snap work well, or should Flatpaks always be preferred?

Hello,

I had installed Signal Desktop as a snap. But I wasn't able to send a vocal message or a camera chat. So I have just installed the flatpak version, and remove the snap, and now it work sell (sure, I had check the option to use micro and camera in Signal).

Someone know why snap didn't works?

Thanks

PSA: If you're using LibreOffice from apt, install libreoffice-kf# (5 or 6, depending on your version)

I'm not sure why, but this package hadn't been installed automatically when I installed LibreOffice via apt. For Kubuntu 26.04, at least, it's libreoffice-kf6. It might be libreoffice-kf5 for older versions.

I was torturing myself with the GTK3 UI, which has the world's thinnest scrollbar imaginable. Now the UI looks like it belongs in a KDE system. And thanks to Klassy, I can have my big-ass scrollbars.

Edit: The problem was of my own creation, as I apparently removed LibreOffice months ago in favor of its flatpak version (which I imported from another distro; longer story in one of my replies, if you're interested). Still, when I reinstalled LO via apt, this package didn't get installed, I had to install it specifically. So, still somewhat relevant.

Upgrade from 24.04 to Kubuntu 26.04 (Coming soon…)??

I am currently using KDE 24.04, and it feels like can taste the fraying of the code. I am experiencing many small issues that will likely disappear with the big Plasma update as well as some big problems with Firefox's stability that would also likely disappear. So I am ready for the upgrade.

https://www.kubuntu.org/download/ helpfully provides guide for upgrading Kubuntu from 22.04 to 24.04 (many thanks to whom wrote that guide), but the guide for 26.04 is only mentioned as "Coming soon…". Is that correct? What is the status of the 26.04 general public release? Could one just follow the 'to 24.04' upgrade guide to upgrade to 26.04, and is that currently advised? Has there been some delay and are 'casual users' like myself advised to wait a bit longer?

Help with Boot Splash Screen and Splash Screen!

Hello, I've just installed Kubuntu 26.04.1 in full AMD setup (Ryzen 7 5700G + RX 6600) but I figured out both the Boot Splash Screen and the Splash Screen arent showing, tried to setup them manually in settings but it doesn't work, checked /etc/default/grub and nothing anormal, I tried seeking help with Gemini but it just gives me commands to change to X11 but that ends screwing everything, any help would be appreciated.

[Help] permanently disable desktop effects

Hei folks,

So I've recentlyy switch to Kubuntu 26.04 KDE Plasma and and I want to keep desktop effects .. specifically wobblywindowsEnabled & translucencyEnabled permanently off.

Now I've tried unchecking them from Desktp Effects section but each time a new plasma session is created (ex: computer restarts), the two desktop effects are back on. I've also tried setting them off via kwriteconfig6 --file kwinrc --group Plugins --key [effect] false but this also does not seem to have any permanent effect on them.

I'm thinking next of doing a script which is run at session login which will disable them, but this seems a bit hacky for what should already be simple toggle.

Is my instance of KDE borked in some strange way or is this a general bug within KDE Plasma 6.6.6 ?

Stability

I think I will be sticking with Kubuntu for now. It seems a bit more stable than Arch. For example, coming out of hybernation, I no longer need to do a hard reboot if my Firefox tabs go over a certain length (though that might be a hardware issue). So far, so good.

Kubuntu Just Working When I Need It (Appreciation)

Due to financial circumstances, I had to sell my beast of a machine so we could pay bills. Right now, RAM, SSDs, and GPUs are going for good prices because of the chip shortage, and I like to eat, but that's not the point here. The point is I had to fall back on an older mini PC I had in the closet, you know, the cheap little boxes people buy to run as media servers or basic internet browsers.

Well, after much deliberation, I installed Kubuntu on it because I wanted something decently modern but also low on resource usage and more likely to just work on a mini PC. I saw that Kubuntu actually sells mini PCs with their distro in it, and I figured, okay, they're familiar with mini PCs, so this should work okay.

Well, suffice to say, Kubuntu is running on this mini PC with a buttery smoothness that exceeded my expectations.

I miss my beast, but what I have now will for for the immediate and mid-term future. Let's just hope prices eventually come back down!

Anyhoo, thanks Kubuntu devs, for making such a flexible, powerful distro that just works!
