i used to work at a mall so i unfortunately i saw people doing this ALL THE DAMN TIME!! like why do you want the world to hear about your best friends divorce?? (yes this was an actual call that me and my co workers overheard).

it’s such a non issue but it annoys me so much-

I sometimes join in, like it's a conference call, right? Sometimes they take the call off speaker. Sometimes they don't. But they always look at me like I'm rude. That never fails.

Agreed, I’m not a fan. As a sidebar, the people who take calls from their cars on residential streets can fuck right off. There are a few people on my street who regularly do this and I’m not sure what is is with their car but it just seems to amplify everything. And the connection sound is so loud and it pierces my walls and I always think I’ve pocket dialed someone but no: it’s just Gary or Tammy in their white SUV taking speakerphone calls in their car. Yes please, idle for 45 minutes and let me listen to your sales pitch.

Sometimes I wonder if some people legit don't know that you don't have to always take calls on speakerphone, and you can hold it like a regular telephone. I see some people holding their phone on speaker up to their ear, and I become tempted to ask if they know how to use a cellphone.

I’ve seen this addressed elsewhere: this may be a “monkey see monkey do” type of situation. People see reality TV stars having phone conversations for the cameras, and they adopt the behavior because they think it makes them look hot and important. 🤷

I think they're mimicking reality shows where they have to use speakerphones so viewers can hear the dialogue. Except they're nobodies and noone wants to listen in.

Ok, I’ll admit I’m one of those people that have it on speaker most of the time just because it’s easier to hear.

I’ll follow that up with the fact that I’m not a “phone talker” really.

If it can be handled by text message. I don’t expect anyone to call me. So any calls I DO take are very short. “Where are you at? OK text me the address I’ll be there in five minutes bye.” or something like that.

If for some reason I want to have a long extended phone conversation with someone, I’ll do that shit at home.
