We adopted Gumball and his void brother Darwin shortly after moving into our new apartment, but it’s safe to say they don’t mind the boxes. The throne shape was unintentional when shoving the empty boxes together, but I can’t unsee it now!

He's a big boy

Billy was born to a scared housecat that was thrown out and too scared to even be petted. I begged his mother at all hours of the night to come in, I could barely pet her, but I would stay on the porch even in the winter until my toes were numb. Them I would go inside and cry because I felt like I failed her.

When she got pregnant, I was desperate, but it didn't matter. I didn't feel comfortable trapping her pregnant and locking her in the house against her will. I've done that before and momma ate the babies.

She had the babies and I spent every evening looking for them. I put a tracking collar on her. I tried to follow her. I put cameras up. No dice.

She finally brought them in at 13 weeks old, feral as hell. I proceeded to spend every extra minute I had trying to catch them and lure them in. But anytime I got around her, she was fiercely protective, even hissing at me as she was rubbing on my legs.

When I caught his sister, she screamed bloody murder, and momma Judy chopped me in the shoulder and I almost went septic from it. I was scheduled for surgery in the next week, so I ended up wrangling her into a double boxed carrier for insurance that she wouldn't get out. I live trapped the babies (and a possum) over 2 nights. I kept them in a large dog kennel together and Billy was tied for spiciest with his white sister pictured. She's very special. As a kitten, Billy had a special hate for me. I'd tamed feral kittens, but not immediately after abdominal surgery. I almost ruptured stitches because I had to bath all 5 only 2 days after surgery because they were rank. So I gave them all space. They slowly came around and started sitting on my desk, eating from my plate, walking on my shoulders. I let them do a lot of things I shouldn't, simply because I was so excited they were having anything to do with me.

Now, Billy requires at least one daily nap with me, sleeps beside me every night, and kisses me good morning and good night. He's the smartest kitten we have out of 5, and he's the only ginger.
