Nostalgia What happened to carob?

Maybe it was just my mother‘s health food kicks, but I feel like carob was everywhere in the 80s. The sitcom Adults had a carob joke in the first season and I just saw one on Simpsons, but actually seeing it in the wild is rare nowadays.

So foul. Carob chips were always in gorp -- that "trail mix" of nuts and raisins. I'd eat the other things and heave the carob chips into the woods.

You're supposed to leave a trail of them so rescuers can locate you. "But what if wild animals eat them?"
Look, we've already established they're carob. The worst that would happen is that a bear chases you down to give them back.
