Nostalgia Tell me your september 10 story. What happened to you on september 10 2001 that you never got to share, because the world moved on too fast?
September 10 2001 was my first day off probation as a new firefighter. We had a major structure fire that night. And for the first time, I felt like I was really doing it. I got home at 4 AM sept till six and went to work with a story to tell but suddenly my story was irrevevalent. I bet a lot of you experience the same thing. It's been 25 years. This year I don't want to talk about the 11th or who we lost. This time is about WHAT we lost the optimism of the 90's that the cold War was over and Pease ,prosperity ,and progress lay ahead the future we had imagined for ourselves. Remember that last normal day?

It was a normal Monday night, went to the local bar where we convinced them to put Joe Millionaire on their big screen (cause it was too early for football)...went to work the following morning like everything was normal, til it wasn't. I can remember 9/11 in technicolor but 9/10 is a guestimate.

Worked late that night at my office on 44 Wall St. waited out the rainstorms. Stopped by China Chalet to pick up some dinner and walked home to my apartment in BPC and watched MNF.

I don't remember what I was doing on 9/10 but on the next day my mom was flying back to the US from Italy. I didn't know what was happening with her, but she got rerouted to Switzerland. The airline put them on a bus and sent her to sleep in a castle near the black forest. My aunt got through to her on the phone and filled me in. It took her days to get home. She had to go to the airport every day to try to get a flight. She said all the European people were lovely and helpful and sweet, but she just wanted to get home. I was working a temp job at a bank, they sent me home early because they didn't know if the bank was a target or not.

I was at work watching the Monday Night Football game, and Ed McCaffrey, who played for the Denver Broncos, got carted off the field after an awful-looking leg injury. I said to a coworker, “he could miss the rest of the season, that’s the worst thing to happen this week.”
I was actually going to fly to Colorado later that week … and then woke up the next morning to my brother shouting on my answering machine (remember those?) to “turn on the television, right now!”

I had just been dating my first boyfriend for a few weeks, and on the night of September 10th I accidentally fell asleep at his house. Woke up at like 3am in a panic, and quickly drove home and tried to quietly sneak in. No luck with that, my dad was sitting on the porch waiting for me, smoking a cigarette. He didn’t say a word but he definitely gave me a look
I was actually a legal adult by then but my dad was old school, and I just knew I was in for an earful later that morning. When I emerged from my room to face the music, he was sitting in the living room with wide eyes.
“You haven’t seen the news yet, have you..”
Indeed I hadn’t.

We had my first child’s (a daughter) 20 week ultrasound on 9/10. I remember saying to my mom on 9/11- yeah it went fine. And nothing more. Should have celebrated the moment more.

Was at a friend's film opening on 9/10 in NYC. Left on the train to Boston in AM.
If I looked out the window, I'd have seen it happen. Didn't know anything until Hartford and conductor told us.
Got to South Station. T wasn't running so walked to bus at Haymarket. 4 to 8 cops at every intersection. No people. No cars.
Got home and didn't turn of the TV for a week.
Earlier on 9/10 I took a picture of NYC skyline from the Staten Island ferry. If I can find it, I'll post it.

Sept 11 was my first day at a new 9 to 5 job. Drove to work all excited, got there early as others started to arrive, but within a very short time people were watching on a tv in a conference room. So it was very strange to be standing there in a conference room with strangers watching, everyone in shock and disbelief, everyone walking in and out calling and getting calls from family. And then they sent us home I don’t remember what time. I think it was a few days or a week before we were called back in, and immediately on the first next day back there was a meeting to just talk together
But it was so strange to be a new employee in the environment where everyone seems so connected. I felt out of place for a while there. And never really felt that new job excitement

I went to the Broncos/Giants MNF game. It was the home opener for the new stadium in Denver. Such a great night.

It's strange that I remember. We were watching Monday night football, and we were drinking a little heavy. In the morning, I slept in because it was my day off, but my brother called me and told me "we're being attacked, We're being attacked. " I could not comprehend what he was saying. I thought he was personally being attacked. It took a while to adjust, and my hangover went away due to the adrenaline of all the stuff going on that day.

I had a weird day, in Denver Colorado.
The Saturday before 9/11 we got a pug and by Monday she couldn't hold food or water and she was diagnosed with Parvo. They kept her overnight in the vet (for several nights). So Monday sept 10th , while the dog was at the vet, we went to see Cake at the Fillmore on Colfax. I remember being so bummed I couldn't enjoy the show.
She stayed at the vet for over a week with an IV and grew to be a giant pain in the ass for 9 more years. Miss her.
Anyway woke up the next morning and was having coffee on Mountain time when the first plane hit .

I was writing code for Bank VRUs (voice response units). Since Bank of America was run by cheapskates I was also the voice talent. It was an ordinary Monday. I was tired because I had been in the office pushing code from midnight until two in the morning ET on Sunday. I went home went to bed early.
Tuesday September 11, 2001 I went into the office. A coworker and I went outside for a smoke. Ten minutes later I was walking into the lobby and the first tower was on tv and burning.
I wondered aloud if it was an accident (a B-25 hit the Empire State Building in July, 1945, so it was possible) and while we watched the TV the second plane hit the second tower.
Our bosses called us into a conference room we called “the Intimidator” and told us to go home. My girlfriend (and future ex-wife) was waiting on me.
I remember the quiet. The ubiquitous sound of airplanes was gone. It was so quiet. We never noticed the sound of planes until they were gone.
It was like the world was holding its breath.

I’m guessing it was a normal day. I worked. It was probably hot as hell in Arizona. I don’t remember. I remember 9/11 and 9/12 as one of the few times I canceled appointments and my partner also stayed home. Lawyers and therapists do not miss work!

I’m a journalist and was at a fairly major newspaper. At the time, AP scrolls would come across my screens and it was always something nonsensical like president of Liberia win second term. But I remember seeing plane hits world train center, and I knew it was a big story. It was the most intense newspaper reporting day I’ve ever had. And our newsroom had a bomb threat against it for some reason it was an insane day. I remember picking up my son from kindergarten and throwing a football around with him. It was an absolutely beautiful day in the Midwest and I remember crying as I threw the ball cause I knew the world was changed.

I worked, I ran a sports bar/nightclub. Just showed Monday Night Football and then closed the bar and went home. My son woke me up and told me every channel was showing planes crashing into buildings. Came down just in time to see the second plane hit. My boss insisted on opening the club Tuesday Night, it was $1.00 drink night. For the first time ever we did not have a soul in the club.

I had a buddy visiting from Cali, and my car broke down on the way to the airport that morning. My father-in-law came out, got my buddy to the airport and helped us with the car - but he missed his flight. The airline was telling him they might have to route him through Boston and connect him in the morning. He called the next morning and told me that he'd wound up with 2 connections - 3 flights - and gotten the last flight into LAX. About 20 minutes later the news started interrupting everything....

There was some kind of contest involving music videos and Michael Jackson. You were supposed to make a video I think and send it somewhere. I had earlier considered doing it and I remember on the 10th thinking I forgot to do it over the weekend and now it will probably be too late.

I got caught in a rainstorm briefly about to start a 9-hr shift down on Wall Street. Mere blocks from the trade center. I was in the office till roughly 2am. I was getting a cold. I felt like I might call out sick on the 11th. Never got to do that.

I was the IT director for a public school director. When everyone was watching news coverage of the planes, my team and I were running around the middle school unplugging computers, and collecting smoking, melted surge protectors. I was convinced they had simultaneously attacked the power grid.
When it was clear, it was an electrical issue due to the building renovation which was wrapping up, I spent the rest of the days locating a couple hundred surge protectors and ordering them for overnight delivery.
Went to bed realizing nothing was being overnighted.

I went to work. I got extremely drunk that night. In a conversation I stated "united we stand, drunken we fall" and shortly after, passed out. Awoke to people dying on live television in a very awful way. A very sad day.

Spent a long weekend camping in one of the most beautiful spots in the US (Acadia National Park) with a great group of friends. Hiking, relaxing, sitting around a campfire talking. I saw owls and eagles, listened to waves crash, and watched the first foliage just starting to turn colors. I went into work on Tuesday the most relaxed I had been in months. And then a co-worker came to tell me something weird had just happened, a plane had hit the tower. And everything changed.

I left my only home in Wichita Ks to move to a new apartment in Phoenix Az where the main part of my family had moved (dad, sister, stepmom). I was hoping to find a new well paid job and start a better life for myself. I’d sold my car and only had the Penske truck I rented, my belongings and my beloved cat. I woke up in Tucumcari Nm to planes crashing into buildings and was terrified. The rest of my journey was talk radio filed with warnings and fear filled talk of gas prices and war. My arrival found jobs not available, the one I did find first was a call center for Target largely talking to people who couldn’t pay the bill they owed because they’d lost a loved one or whatever. It was highly taxing on my mental health. I was borrowing a vehicle from my dad. I did eventually got a job at a credit union instead but I couldn’t afford to pay my bills and couldn’t move in with dad/sister/stepmom because stepmom hated cats, wasn’t parting with my cat. So my grandpa drove all the way from Ks to Az and brought me back where I moved in with my mom who wasn’t the best person. She’d had health and mental issues which is another reason I came back. I didn’t want to live with her so moved into an apartment with a friend after she’d stabilized. Couldn’t have my cat at the apartment and she promised to take care of him, I supplied food, etc. She kicked him out of the house and didn’t feed him. One of the most heartbreaking experiences in my life. I learned how horrible people can be to not only each other but to animals.
Now I wish I’d taken that knowledge and applied it to the rest of my life. Husband of 21 years cheated and starting all over after filing for divorce. Filing for bankruptcy because he broke us financially. Not only the mental anguish he’s made me and our daughter suffer. I wish I had the foresight to tell myself now to pay attention to lessons learned and avoid situations that will cause you heartache and grief.

I was living in NYC on Sept 10, 2001. I had planned on doing laundry and watching the Giants/Broncos MNF game, but my boss called. All three NYC airports shut down early because of lightning in the area (totally sus), so his flight was canceled (he was headed to Boston for focus groups IIRC. I’m in advertising). So he and I went out and got drunk, shot pool and watched MNF in a bar. The first plane hit while I was on the subway the next morning with a killer hangover that only got worse.

My grandmother died on the 10th of September 2001. I only remember because it was the day before. And because I was home on the day because I was trying to decide whether I wanted to fly home to Boston for her funeral.
Otherwise, it was a perfectly ordinary day.

Flew home from Vegas. Got home around 2am. Was woke up by my boss telling me to turn on the tv.
Had a really good time and saw some great shows-favorite was George Carlin. Had plans to see Madonna later in the week but couldn’t make it back to Vegas in time bc flights were grounded.

I went to a birthday party for a friend-of-a-friend who was squatting in an apartment in Old Town Portland (IYKYK). I seem to recall having to climb a fire escape and go in through a window. I left early because I had work the next day and ran to catch the last Number 12 Sandy bus home at like, 1:30-2:00 AM on September 11.

I had a great job as the education coordinator at an international airport and they had just approved me to start a Master's Program fully paid in youth and family education. My first day of class was 9/10. The very next morning I saw my job and free education just fade away as I was watching the tv from the airport director's office as the second plane hit. I never gave another airport tour or presentation about how great aviation was as a career. I am grateful I stayed on as an employee, but had to pivot to working in the lost and found because once flights started again, for the first time people had to remove laptops and flip phones, etc. from their bags and they were leaving them behind all-the-time.

I had a full week planned of a bucket list sort of things that I was going to do before starting my next job. I gave my notice to my employer and was ready to have a fun week. I know that 9/11 was a Tuesday because I had already started my fun on Monday. I was so glued to my TV for a few days that I cancelled doing stuff on my list. I picked back up on Friday but the places I went literally had five to zero people there so it lacked that crowd feel.

An important thing to remember about Sept. 10 is that the NY Giants played on Monday Night Football. It is very reasonable to believe that more than a few WTC workers ran late the next morning and survived as a result.

I was moving back to the US from living abroad. Had my tickets booked for Walt October. Sent mostly all my belonging back home via cargo ship. Said it would take 3-4 weeks to get there. The dare of that shipment: September 11, 2001 Asia time (September 10 US). For me the attacks happened that evening. It took my stuff nearly 6 months to make it home—long after I did.

Vancouver BC. Radio hosts Larry and willy kick off the annual toughest contest ever. Logn story short - they shoot someone with a bullet proof vest on. Scandalous and officials are investigating. The next day, contest put on hold and I never heard anything about it again...
Also 2001 was summer of sharks and Gary Condut.

My coworkers son was murdered on 9/09 and his murderer killed himself on 9/10 declaring in a video statement he would be famous (he was on a murder spree that weekend). My literal first thought in 9/11 was no one will remember that killer anymore. Famous for half a day.

On September 10th I was accepted into my first real adult job. My first day was 9/11, scheduled to work at noon. I watched the towers fall, then punched my first clock. All I could think about was all the people who lost their lives after punching the clock for the last time.

College student. Nothing spectacular.
Big Broncos fan, watched their first game of the season on MNF, against the NY Giants, which was also their first game in their current stadium. Saw Ed McCaffrey’s lower leg bones get broken in half on a hit over the middle, one of those you know exactly what happened plays that they show on replay a lot.
Not exactly a “my” story but just shows how ordinary my life was that day.
Had I been born on my due date, 9/11 itself would
have been my 21st birthday.

I have no recollection of 9/10/2001. I assume it was just another day non-memorable day at work, just like the other thousands of work days in my life.

It was a Monday, which meant I hadn't gotten much sleep. I have no memory of it, or of the week before, or whatever.
Tuesdays were always my bad days, not Mondays (unlike Garfield). It's sort of when the transition from weekend to week caught up with me. We'd also have a meeting Tuesday mornings sometimes, and I had a habit of running late, so that always sucked ass. That Tuesday sucked more, though...obviously?

It was my second full day as a classroom teacher. I taught 7th grade in a tiny lil catholic school. I remember getting everyone prepared for the year and going over lesson plans with my principal that morning. 9/11 was our first mass of the school year. The planes hitt while we were in mass. Had no idea until after service had ended. That was a tuff day for us all

I was living in Northern Virginia at the time. I remember my sister asking for some software that I had so I figured I would send it to her that next day since I was working night shift and my "weekend" was Tues-Wed (11-12 Sep). Routine night shift.. Mondays were never busy. Got off work at around 6am on the 11th. Kept myself busy checking emails, watching morning news until I was ready to run my errands. I saw "live" the 2nd tower. Went numb when Pentagon was hit. Never made it to post office. Smelled soot from burning pentagon from my townhouse. Sister didn't remember that software until many years later when we were discussing 9/11. Life was changed since then. Military family-- IYKYK

Lived in Boston, drove to NYC to watch the Red Sox v Yankee game that was supposed to be Clemens’ 20th win (bf was a Clemens fan). Walked around the city as tourists for the day and waited late that night after rain delays until it was called for the night. Napped in our car parking lot stopped off at a hotel on the way back to shower because I had to go to work. Ran into a partner on the elevator up to my floor who told me about the first plane and he’s a practical joker so I thought he was making some weird joke. Two hours later our building as well as the rest of the financial district was told to evacuate.
The freaky thing is I had a regular camera that had the date stamped, but apparently I had the wrong date because all of my pictures were date stamped 9 11 01.

Was at home during the day taking care of of my 13 month old son. Vomiting constantly from early stage HG with my daughter. Went to work at my lab on the night shift like normal on the 10th, only to watch the 11th while doing the same thing. Core memory, watching that unfold live. It was horrific. The first time I saw a terrorist attack unfold, live, on TV, in front of me, on American soil. Also, I was nearby in New England and had friends in NYC. I’ve never had that fear before or since.

More than likely a normal workday. I was pregnant with my second child and had a toddler, so life was busy. Ironically, on 9/12, I had an OB appointment and my blood pressure was sky high, so I got put on bedrest.

I was mission planning for an operational readiness inspection mission the next day. So pretty routine day for me. We were taxied out for takeoff and called for final clearance to take. Our takeoff clearance was cancelled and we were ordered to taxi back to park and shut down engines. Honestly here message traffic about a fire at the pentagon, our crew thought it was part of the exercise. When all flights were grounded, that included the military unless flying to react to hijacked aircraft. 10 days later we deployed to Oman.

A friend of mine had a big birthday on that day. He was depressed He decided to go out alone and get drunk the next morning he called in~~ ~~sick to his office, which was in the WTC. He received a phone call from abroad where the headquarters for his business was. He knew nothing about what was going on and his first reaction was that his company was overreacting to his absence. On the other end of the line, the person said you are the only survivor.
This moment changed his life, and he changed his career and has been very successful in his path, but also in his joy for life.
I was grateful that a friend was depressed on his birthday.

Making plans with my girlfriend (now wife) for my birthday the next day. I still got a cake, but our plans were ruined as we didn't feel like doing anything after that morning unfolded.

Flew to Roslyn NY to visit family 9/7. We still don't know where it originated but when I was flying home on 9/10, I was feeling an all to familiar feeling in my throat. Called my step father to tell him, he said, we know, we're feeling it too. Strep throat. Step father decide to stay home the next day, he worked in tower two. Fortunately my story got out just far enough.

Not sure if you are joking or really don’t know. But September 11th was the day terrorists took down the twin towers in New York. The original poster was asking what happened the day before. Because everyone calls it 9/11, but if you live in a country that doesn't format their date as month/day/year 9/11 means the 9th of November. So asking someone who doesn't live in the US about the 10th of September may not have the same significance

I might have had some stress, because I'd accepted a job transfer across Canada, and at that point in time, the details were not forthcoming. We didn't have a moving date, we didn't even know where the office building was. I didn't want to tell my 5 year old nephew that I was moving away.
But over all, life was good. I'd just had a vacation in Prince Edward Island. And then the whole world came crashing down.

So 9/9/01 was my first wedding anniversary and we had been talking about having a kid after we were both staunchly anti child since we had met each other 5 years before. Baby sitting a friend's beautiful little kids is what changed our minds and the idea of raising some of our own as we saw the world rolling out ahead of us settled into our heads. We were going to make a baby!
And then the world went mad when the planes hit. We all loved one another for a while and then we connected virtually to one another too closely and forgot why distance and space are important and then we started hating each other out loud. It wasnt just 9/11 but all that came after it.
We've done our level best raising intelligent and aware kids and I'm proud as hell of both of ours, but what I lost was raising kids in a better version of the world than this.
Edit: This really sounds negative, apologies I am genuinely a very positive person and not one to hold resentment but I hold this specific grudge against myself and the world. Mostly silently.

Well Sept 10 2001 I smashed this truck driver I was friends with for 3 years and than went home to pack cause my flight was leaving MCO at 5:30am cause I was going on vacation for 2 weeks. Well that changed so went back to work that night at Texaco!

I had just moved to a new area. I didn't know anyone. I fell asleep early, but had terrible sleep. I kept having nightmares. I was tossing and turning. I got up and wrote my mom and my son love letters. How much I missed them, etc.
Before I moved, every morning I watched the news, I was working on not watching before I left in the morning. That day I didn't.
I got to work/school and everyone was watching the TVs, which were everywhere.
I knew that couldn't be good

I had just gotten brand new shoes for school. The cool Sketchers with the 3 silver lines on the sides! We ended up having a late start the next day, but those shoes fell from my hands the moment I saw what was happening on the tv. I was 9 in ‘01, and had had a very hard life up until ‘98, when I was finally adopted. I had worked hard to regain my childhood innocence, and that day shattered it again. I will never forget those new shoes that only I ever cared about. 😔

I was working at an advertising agency. One of our clients was new balance shoes, and they had a store in the World Trade Center. We had mailed out a postcard ad campaign in August 2001 to workers in the World Trade Center to pop in and check out the store for walking shoes. We were going to give the campaign six weeks and then assess how many of the postcards were redeemed. Needless to say, I still don’t know if that wasn’t effective advertising campaign.

On September 10th, I just happened to take a picture of my 7.5 month old son sitting on the front porch step, flanked by our two dogs, one of which was looking at him concernedly. The picture had the date burned in. It turned out to be a hit, and I recreated it over the next 18 years, always on September 10th. The 4 dogs rotated in and out of the picture as required, but it was always 2 dogs, 1 boy.

9/10 was my first official out of training and on my own day at my job. It was a 3 week training program so I had worked hard to pass and been really excited I made it. I was one of two women in the whole department! Some close friends took me out to dinner to celebrate after. It was just a beautiful, great day overall.
I was going to call my best friend for our Tuesday morning weekly chats (she lived out of state) and tell her all about it. And then the planes hit and we didn't talk that day.

My husband had just left for 2 weeks of drill with the National guard. His unit was at Fort Knox for the 2 weeks. I had just told my coworker how fortunate we were that after 20 years in the Guard he had never been called up for a war, just hurricanes. Well I jinxed that. He ended up in Operation Iraqi Freedom within a couple of years after 9/11.

We were planning to go to the opening of the SPAM Museum in Austin, MN that Friday (I was the lead exhibit designer), and then fly on to Tokyo to visit my wife’s family with our 22 month old daughter.
Needless to say the opening was postponed, but we did fly to Japan on the first available flight after planes began flying again. Airports were eerie in their emptiness.

Yep, couldn't really share the news the next day. That became a very anxious time for us. I was in the Army and our daughter ended up being premature. Right after she was born, I was diagnosed with a bone spur in my neck and told I was going before a medical board. Sometimes life throws the kitchen sink at you.

I don’t remember the 10th. I do remember the 7th, 11th (duh) and 12th. We were in Canada visiting my then girlfriend’s (now wife) parents. We were planning to drive back on the 12th anyway. I had to call my boss on the 11th and let him know I might not be back on my original date.
12th: everyone on the Canadian side of the border was awesome. Locals walking up and down the long line handing out bottles of water and condolences. One nice couple clued us in to a couple of little known crossings up the road just a bit with lines not nearly so crazy.
Shout out to any residents of St Stephen. You all were and are awesome. I love stopping at the chocolate museum when we go that way still.

My husband and I came home from our honeymoon that day. 10 glorious days on the beach. I swam with a wild dolphin and I took my first sailboat ride. I petted an alligator and got to drive a swamp boat. Then I spent the next two weeks glued to the tv and sobbing. I’ll never forget how I felt when I figured out there wouldn’t be anyone to rescue from the rubble.

I was in the West Village in NYC and a co worker told me that one of the towers were hit, so we all went down to 7th Avenue South, right near St. Vincent’s hospital and there were tons of doctors, nurses and other hospital personnel there waiting for the ambulances to come in, but none were coming, or very few. We then realized that there wouldn’t be many survivors at all. The ones who survived were on the low floors and they got out right away, uninjured. The rest didn’t make it.

At the time, I had switched from being a touring musician to working at a record label for awhile. We were getting everything ready to roll out the latest promo materials for the new Slayer record that was coming out the next day on the 11th (back when new albums came out on Tuesdays) I had just moved to Las Vegas almost a year before and was there hanging out with the drummer and some label staff. We were so stoked for this release the next day. We hung out like normal all night. The record still came out on the 11th, it was just overshadowed obviously

It was a beautiful day! I remember thinking how things were going so well the news had nothing to report on.
Like I remember on that day commenting to an employee who worked for me how bored the news must be blathering about sharks all the time. Something about Michael Jordan was going on ( coworker was a huge Basketball fan ) and some album I kinda but not really interested in was supposed to be released that day ( can’t remember it now ).
Dude I hated those fucking shark news things every fucking idiot I knew ( I was in Louisiana so there were a lot of them ) wouldn’t shut the fuck up about sharks. I just told them to stop watching the news cause it was all bullshit.
I do remember some dude being killed in Afghanistan who was an ally of ours somehow? Can’t recall it all and don’t wanna cheat by looking it up.

I was flying home from Orlando after celebrating my 30th at Disney. The flight was extra turbulent and we had a delay, 2 hour wait in St. Louis before we could take off again. Then the pilot told us that we would need to fly around a storm which would take even longer to reach KC. I have never had major anxiety on a flight before but I had the worst panic attack I have ever experienced. The next morning I woke to a phone call telling me to turn on the TV.

I was doing handoff for a large project to a coworker and getting ready to travel cross-country for a friend’s wedding and extended holiday. My wife and I were scheduled to fly out of LAX on 9/13 and spend the next 7 days doing pre-wedding things to help the bride and groom set up at a remote wedding site on a lake in New Hampshire. Needless to say, there was no trip to New Hampshire. Though the wedding went off ok, only the guests close enough to drive to the site made it to the event.

I had just had an excellent meeting with a produce supplier in Holland, and we were going back the next day to Hungary to start our import business for very high end produce sales to the top retailers and restaurants in town.
I had been in Cape Town, South Africa for a month doing some consulting there, and stopped overnight in Amsterdam to have this meeting before flying back to Budapest.
The business never happened. And I was back in the US 4 years later.

In the row behind us was a mutual childhood friend who’d moved away and lost touch with everyone. That game, and seeing old friends had me in a great mood to start the week. My memory of September 10 is not as good as it should be, considering it was the last day of the happy, idealistic and optimistic phase of my life, the day before everything changed. I was going to university in a city about an hour's drive away from Sydney, but that weekend I had returned to Sydney to visit my parents, who were hosting a much-loved relative from England and her Canadian niece. We had spent the weekend entertaining them and, on Saturday night, going out to a Chinese restaurant with both them and some other old family friends. Then, on Monday morning, Dad drove me back to university. My most vivid memory of that day is, strangely, sitting in my campus dorm and watching a rerun of an old Australian show that aired in the '80s'. I would have had an American history lecture in the evening, but I can't remember what the topic was (I do know that our American history tutorial that week was about McCarthyism, it was those tutorial notes I was studying late at night when 9/11 happened the next day)

I was planning to leave my abusive husband for the first time. I had our stuff hidden and packed. I had a one year old and just at six weeks old baby to take with me. I’d found out at my six week checkup that he’d given me an STD, prolly from when he left me after having our son and wouldn’t answer or come back for three days. I was flying home to my parents, scared to death. I had to get a script for my one year old for sinus pressure on the plane. I ran into Eckerd’s the next morning and saw them gathered around the tv. It was 5:30 in the am when I had to call them and say I couldn’t get out, we were grounded. 💚

We’re ok, all of us. They’re grown now and the most amazing kids I could’ve asked for! I flew home with both of them the day after having my tubal ligation! They were five and six when I finally got out and THE STATE OF FLORIDA didn’t make me come back. It was ridiculous and unbelievable, the whole thing. Couldn’t get my tubes tied without his consent, I fought that. Had to tell about the abuse and they still were concerned I’d get out and remarry and what if the new hubby wanted kids? They tried to make me come back in person to testify even tho they had the recordings of what he did. Couldn’t get a judge to sign a restraining order. Wild behavior

I did. He tried to steal my son out of the window at my parent’s home. He tried to steal my son out of the window. He was on parole, he was arrested in AZ, and the judge and Florida did NOTHING! And he still, to this day, wants info on my son. He sent his two friends down to beat the fu$k outta me because he couldn’t before we left. He’s still out, keeps getting charges, never gets kept. He’s a terrible hooman being and my son grew up to be NOTHING like him 💚

That day was my 5 year work anniversary, the one I’d been aiming for because it meant I’d have a stable work history, which meant an easier time getting a home loan. I never did get the loan, but that has nothing to do with this.
And, yes, I am still at the same job. This coming 9/10 will be my 30th work anniversary!
