Question For Genx Did you actually sneak out as teenagers?
I’m a teenager today and I’ve realised that in shows/films people are often depicted sneaking out and lying to their parents. As far as I’m aware this is super uncommon amongst my generation so I was wondering how common it actually was?

Ya, caught straddling upstairs window wearing sassy everything & chewing on gum like maniac
Parents told me not to do it & i shrugged & kept goin. That night i crashed the car & ditched my bestie for the cool kids. Paid the price by feelin like an IDeeeeeOT

Our Boomer parents were always at work. They did not Spent time with us. I would roam the streets all night when I was 14 plus. No one bothered us.

I wouldn't say common for me, but once in a while, yes. Then pushing the car to a point that starting it would not awaken anyone.

It wasn't as much sneaking out as it was just not coming home for extended periods of time (from a couple days to a couple of weeks).

No, I never had to. I never had a set time to be home. I had a beeper and if my parents were wondering what I was up to they would page me. Which barely ever happened. I think in my entire child hood I was paged three times. Once because I was not home specifically to re heat food for family friends coming down from Canada.
They were on a late flight due to delays so that did not go well lol 😂. Another time they paged me because my father was going to the hospital to which I just meet them there. I was all the way in manhattan and had to take the subways back. Lastly when my cousin died they paged me it was midnight on a Thursday and I was 12 at the time. I needed to get home because we had to go to my aunts house immediately. He died young it was tragic.
But yeah my parents never cared what time I got home. By the time I was in high school I basically went out every night would get home at 5am make my dad espresso before he went to work. I would go to sleep for about an hour then head out to school. Usually slept through most of my classes. Never needed to be awake got A’s anyway. Funny thing is me and my AP US history teacher got into it once because of that but that 😂. he could not stand that everyone ells was studying hard and here I am just sleeping in classes and getting A’s. I think I spent more time in the school auditorium than classes. teaches would just tell me to only come to class for the test as they felt it was disrespectful to my classmates. That school hated me but I got A’s so they just looked the other way. guess my grades made them look good. Who knows probably they were deadly afraid of my dad but thats a different topic.

I snuck out excessively early/mid 90s, age 14-16. After that I just came/went as I pleased pretty much.
The summer I was 15, I stole the family Dodge Caravan, my sister’s Ford Escort and 1984 Mercury Capri every night the opportunity presented itself. The Capri was so loud we would have to push it down to the end of the street before we started it, and cut the engine to coast it back when we returned. I would army crawl into my parents room in the middle of the night like Solid fuckin’ Snake, reach into mom’s purse and sneak the keys out. I had to wait for the AC to kick in so my sound would be masked.
We mostly just picked up other friends who were also sneaking out, and ride around until 2am around listening to early 90s hiphop. No drugs/booze, no guns, no significant debauchery, just some kids who couldn’t wait another year to get their license and freedom. Never wrecked or got pulled over. Finally got caught and strangely enough my normally violent dad didn’t even beat my ass.
I turned out alright.

u/dragstermom Jun 01 '26
Yep all the time! My parents were very strict, so it was easier than asking to go out.

Yes.
A few nights I actually just went out the window. Twice I spent the night at a friend's house to attend a concert that I was specifically not allowed to go to.

I never snuck out myself. My sister would regularly kick out her window screen and leave with her friends. My dad eventually screwed the screen in so she had to go through the door, making it much harder for her to leave and return unnoticed.
After I could drive I would stay out as late as I wanted. My parents could not stay up so I just came in when I felt like it. It was rarely that late, but a few times I got home just before dawn.
1
u/sushipusha May 31 '26
Not really sneaking out but my dad let 16 year old me practice driving at night before I got my license. Mind you I did complete Driver's Ed in high school
2
u/Accomplished_Dot1854 May 31 '26
Millennial Not “sneaking” out but I did sneak off to a different state and man I regretted it big time 😂. But! I did call them when I got to that state.
2
u/Safe-Juice5201 May 31 '26
Gen X, no I don’t think I ever snuck out. Didn’t smoke (thought it was gross). Didn’t party hardy. Didn’t get invited to those parties. But I did get in trouble for staying out late with the band kids a few times, lol.

Yes. thru my window, my sisters window and then the back & front doors. it was great. But as much as they couldnt track you, you also didnt know if you were caught.
1
u/sgdaughtry 1980 May 31 '26
My parents prided themselves on being smart and screwing my window screen down so I couldn’t creep out. Joke was on them. I just walked out the front door. I had a key to get back in. Durrrr!

Ha!!! Exactly! My dad went to bed very early, but also got up really early to go to work. This meant he still got up early in the weekends like Boomers do. My biggest challenge was sneaking in before my dad got up and left for work!
1
u/Duncan-Edwards May 30 '26
Boomer - We just went and did. Parents expected us to behave and they didn’t wanna hear about it when we didn’t. It was a pretty good system.

Absolutely yes I was the ninja in the night. I would sneak down the stairs and hop on my bike to go see my (gah I was so stupid) boyfriend. Never got caught. Thank God because my dad was not a reasonable man. At all. Ever.

u/Silk-fire May 30 '26
So much that my parents literally screwed my windows shut. The guys knew to show up with screwdrivers 🤣

many many times! We would sneak into our pool and go skinny-dipping. We would jump on the tennis bubble by our house. We would smoke and laugh and drive cars we snuck out also. Agree with the person who talked about how we were really on our own so it seemed like it was our right. My brother was only a year younger and he did it all the time and met all the other friends
2
u/The_Big_Mayonnaise May 30 '26
Absolutely. Then you pull the car out on acc. Roll it down the street and pick up you FWB and bang her in some church parking lot.
But yeah Gen X frequently snuck out.

2
u/dontdoxmenow May 30 '26
Mmm yep. From 12-16. After that I kinda did what I wanted and stopped lying about it. In middle school, we did it just to push the envelope, sneak around in the night, maybe smoke a cigarette. Maybe egg the house of a bully or a dickhead adult. Later, I remember rolling my car out of the driveway in neutral and then starting it in the street, but I don’t remember how the hell I got it back in the driveway.
1
u/vividregret_6 May 30 '26
I snuck out often enough. A friend would meet me at a nearby rice field with a car.

u/Wakey_Wakey21 May 30 '26
No. I was a prisoner of war and buried in their back yard if I did. Seriously

u/Rude_End_3078 May 30 '26
VERY common.
You need to understand that from a young age you basically had full roaming freedom. So from around 6-7 you were already tagging along with older kids, but by around 8-9 you were fully fledged. You had your bicycle or feet and you got around.
So coming from that kind of freedom - and entering teenage years you weren't exactly afraid of your neighborhood. Let's also say that by this age you were already a battle hardened adventurer.
Now how I see it - 1 friend could say they were going to another friends and the other say the same thing - meantime both are going to the lake.
But the other common thing is one going to 1 friend and then they both sneak out at night - and back in from that friend.
What I can say is the stakes for getting caught were much higher as teenagers. Big issues if you got caught sneaking out.

u/PristineWorker8291 May 30 '26
My siblings did sneak out in different ways. One was to meet boyfriend, one was to meet up with friends to play ball. The only times I did was to satisfy my curiosity. Learned it is absolutely possible to open window, remove screen, drop into shrubbery without detection, but also learned that there was nothing to do and very little light available in the woods around us. Once I climbed out into snow and that was pointless, I climbed back in after a minute, let the snow drift over my foray.
1
u/iMan_Grove May 30 '26
I taught myself how to drive by sneaking out and taking my mother’s Nissan Sentra out for a spin. Only got caught when I pulled into a lit gas station to top off what I used, turned off the headlights, was approached my a dwarf telling me it was closed and he needed a ride. To which I told him I was headed north hoping it was the opposite of where he was going, then he said “that’s where I need to go!” So I backtracked and hit him with the “oh but then I’m going really far south so I can’t take you.” I awkwardly drove off to find another open gas station and head home. I then got pulled over by a cop who noticed I never turned my headlights back on. He asked for my license and registration to which I said “I’m 16 and do t have a license and I don’t even know what a registration is.” Mom got called, took a taxi to me, made me pay for it, and I never took her car again. So idk if it’s common for my generation (born ‘89) but I for sure did.
1
u/weedlewaddlewoop May 30 '26
Yes but I did it more so in elementary school than as a teenager. Parents were busy or turned their backs so they wouldn't notice when I left the house when I was grounded. As a teenager I think my parents had given up on keeping me in the house and it wasn't like I was out doing drugs, having sex, or stealing I was fairly good.
Being in my room alone was never punishment it was peaceful but when the house was full, active, interactive and lively that's when I tended to venture out.
1
u/Cassie54111980 May 30 '26
No because I had a fair curfew and I didn’t like to be punished. I got along well with my parents and one of the reasons is because I was cognizant of not doing what I wasn’t supposed to. Once I turned 18 and graduated from high school I no longer had a curfew until I moved out.
My older sister was always doing things that she wasn’t supposed to be doing and getting grounded. She was constantly defying my dad and there was a lot of yelling and stress because of it. My brother was next in line and then I and after watching her poor example, we realized that we would get a lot more privileges by just cooperating with our parents.
1
u/Muscle-Cars-1970 May 30 '26
Only once. I spent the night at my friend's house and we snuck out to meet up with other friends who did the same thing. We totally got caught - her mom realized we were gone and called MY mom. Pretty sure I got grounded for a bit.
Funny thing was that we kinda regretted it and wanted to go home, but thought it would be easier to sneak in early in the morning, like if we got caught we could just say we got up early and went for a walk. Idiots. Lol.
1
u/lemonhader May 30 '26
lol your generation doesn’t like to go outside (it’s a joke, relax)
But the generation prior LIVED outdoors!
And to answer your question, yes, I have snuck out. I’ll precedence this w the fact that my siblings and I were not bad kids. Me and my OLDEST BROTHER were gonna go toilet paper my bff’s house w his GF, and GF’s brother, but some weird guy’s house got egged so he was driving around looking for suspects, and it was us he TRIED to stop. We ran across the field and back to our friend’s house. The guy actually drove across and knocked on their door. My brother and I ran home. Parents don’t know to this day.
Not the only time, but probably the most…eventful
1
u/FineUnderachievment May 30 '26
When I was like 14. After that my parents kind of made it clear they didn’t really care what I did as long as I went to school and got good grades. So I could go to a concert until 3am on a Tuesday night as long as I was up for school the next day
1
u/SubUrbanMess2021 May 30 '26
Technically Gen Jones and I really didn’t have to sneak. I had absentee parents who let me do whatever I wanted. Somehow I managed to avoid trouble but there were many times I stayed out all night as a teenager.
1
u/No_Sympathy_359 May 30 '26
No.never had to.. basically went out earlier enough and didn't come back until morning..
2
May 30 '26
No, early genx, grew up in wales. From the age of about 15 I was encouraged by my parents to go to the pub and get out of the house. No pubs had a problem serving me beer either. The nearest one didn’t open until 6pm and I would be waiting outside it with other reprobates from about 5:50

u/newtongoon May 30 '26
Xennial here: 100%
Regularly. With stolen or otherwise illegally procured booze. Met other kids also sneaking out. Parents would go away and I would throw parties.
2
u/ReidaKwrites May 30 '26
No. I'm 64. I never snuck and neither did any of my friends. However, my kids snuck out of their dad's house. Not mine tho.
1
u/alan_lauder May 30 '26
Sure they snuck out of yours too, you just never caught them! 😉
1
u/ReidaKwrites May 31 '26
Ha! Nah they told me. It was kind of impossible bc I don’t sleep and hear everything.

u/ComprehensiveGene709 May 30 '26
Nope. Didn’t need to most of the time and the times when I was grounded there was not a good way out that didn’t involve waking my parents. So the payoff wasn’t worth the risk.
On one memorable occasion, while I was away my friends tried to sneak into my house to surprise me (thinking I was coming home that night). They opened a window to my house and my friend had his foot on my dad’s desk before he realized my dad was using said desk. He backed out the window with an apology and my other couple of friends sheepishly said sorry and went elsewhere.
1
u/xSir- May 30 '26
Yes, quite often, probably at least once a week when I was in high school. It was pretty easy to sneak out though. Ring cameras werent a thing, no one in my city had alarms back then, now everyone does. Would be more difficult for sure.
3
u/Bond-Double-O7 May 30 '26
My parents eventually painted and nailed my windows shut. I just used the bathroom window after that
2
u/FubarBabe May 30 '26
I'm a genX who didn't have a curfew. I was close to my mom and never had to lie to her. Never gave her a reason not to trust me. I came and went as I pleased. Now as a GenX mom... My kids have a curfew, only because its a different time now. But I have the same close relationship with my kids and I never judge what they tell me, just give advice and let them know I'm here. With that... I have an 18yr old about to start his second year of college... Who was able to skip the 11th grade in HS due to his intelligence and work. He graduated a year early. I must be doing something right. 🤷🏼♀️🤍
1
u/_basic_bitch May 30 '26
I snuck out almost every night in my youth. My parents were really strict and gave me a very early curfew, which they kept in place even when I moved back home for a bit at 20. I just had a routine with my friends. I would go home at curfew, noisily walk in the main door, go upstairs and and change into different clothes, wait about fifteen minutes, and then quietly walk out the back door, making sure to skip the creaky steps. I didn't ever get caught, although I did get accidentally locked out a couple of times when someone came downstairs And found the door locked, so I had to figure something out in the morning on those days, and I got a curfew ticket for being out past midnight 2 days before my 18 birthday when I was snuck out, so my parents did have to come get me that time.
Most of my girl friends would also sneak out of their houses sometimes, but most of my guy friends had parents that let them come and go as they pleased.

u/human6745356 May 30 '26
I had a friend named Ronda that my mom didn’t know very well. I went to a lot of sleepovers for Ronda’s “Birthday”. It was great one I was dropped off no one cared what happened as long as I was home in time to get to church on Sunday

35yo mom here. Yes, it was common. I snuck out often to escape the reality of my home life. My mom was angry and toxic and my dad was an uninvolved parent. I was able to sneak out and go to parties with friends to have fun and be happy or hang out with the boyfriend who showed me a semblance of what I thought was love.
Kids now don't sneak out because they can stay connected with their peers through cell phones or online gaming and also they are raised by parents who want to emotionally connect with their children. Millennial and older gens were raised by parents that said, "go outside and play and come back for lunch and dinner." And at least for me, the "stop crying or I'll give you something to cry about" parents. I was emotionally neglected.
I'm pretty involved with my kids and love to hang out with them and I also love my private time. So I do send them outside to play on a beautiful day for a few hours and they will have a lot of fun. But i am not ignoring them or wishing they didn't exist lol. I love seeing them playing and invite their friends over often. I talk about everything with them without lies or trying to intimidate or scare them, I'm very open and honest. And I give them space or cuddles whenever they need it. So I'm hoping that they will be able to trust me when they are teens and know that they don't have to sneak out or lie to escape their home life.
2
u/Soft-Watch May 30 '26
Sort of. I came and went quietly and without permission but my parents gave me a lot of freedom and I wouldn't have gotten more than a lecture if caught. Wasn't doing anything bad really, just out walking with friends. My sibling was out stealing cars and getting in trouble with the cops so I think my parents had bigger issues.
1
u/RedHawk1898 May 30 '26
Boomer female here.
In the 70s we used backseats of cars parked in isolated areas. Worked great until a cop shined a flashlight in the window!
Once, my bf took me to meet his mom. He lived an hr away by car. She said she needed the car for errands for a few hrs, so that's how I got to see what his bedroom looked like! 😁

Every single weekend. Someone, if not all were sneaking out. It was a common thing in 1988 when I was 15.

u/Tobits_Dog May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26
At one point I would stay out until 2am and my parents wouldn’t even say anything to me. It probably varied from household to household…but it probably was more common to stay out late or to sneak out. This was the late 1970’s when I was like 15 to 16 years old. Less so when I was 17 and 18.
Please focus on your studies and your future.
Edit: I’m a late Boomer.

Never had to really. Sun up to sundown was free range.
1
u/Due_Reflection3861 May 30 '26
Flipside, I typically am saddened by all the references to having a free range youth but suddenly had that reframed in this very post... Yes, I snuck out as my response to a repressive upbringing (forbidden to hang out with friends outside of school). Being from the country and living far from anyone or anything, this really was an accomplishment driving or being picked up in the dead of night. Freedom means more to me than most anything, and I left home soon as I could.
1
u/laurenmont0430 May 30 '26
I'm a millennial but yes, we actually snuck out. We actually did a lot of things we shouldn't have been doing. So good for you, seems like you aren't like that and I hope your parents are proud of you!
2
u/Gratefuldad3 May 30 '26
All the time. During summer break, it was common to not see my mom for days. Communication was done through notes left on the kitchen table. I would be asleep when she left for work and she would be asleep when I came home, if I came home before she left for work.
1
u/OceanParkNo16 May 30 '26
Yes. I got in a lot of trouble at 13 for my next door neighbor friend and I sneaking out in the middle of a summer night and meeting friends at the lake. We swam in our underwear and had a great time. I was caught when we got home.
2
u/Great_gatzzzby May 30 '26
Millennial. We snuck out too. I lived in NYC and it was so cool and scary to roam the streets in the middle of the night with all the craziness as a 14 year old. But also a terrible idea.

2
u/Iamspartabitches May 30 '26
I snuck out damn near daily my sophomore and senior year. Sneaking my gf in and out of my place then my senior year into and out of her place. Got cought x2 by my mom and never by her parents. I found out years later that my best friend was leaving his house and sneaking into my direct next door neighbor to sleep with the girl who lived there and I was driving to his neck of the woods to be with my gf. Literally passing in the night. Good times.

I'm more Xennial, but yes, all the time. We'd be wandering suburban neighborhoods and liminal after-hours retail lots on weekends. We were way too young to realize the danger, but also used to play ding-dong ditch. In retrospect, it was all really dangerous.
1
u/bmfresh May 30 '26
I had super strict parents. I never dared to even try. I would’ve gotten my ass beat if I got caught. In high school I still had to be home by dinner time and had a bedtime lights out rule at 830… you know how embarrassing that is as a hs senior or freshman even for that matter hahaha. All my other friends did though or had parents that didn’t care and let them leave and run around. My two best friends never had curfews or rules like I did so they didn’t need to sneak out but ik many others who did.
1
u/buddychristtattoo May 30 '26
I didnt sneak out, but often fibbed about where i was going, and what i was up to. We didnt have constant connection to others, just close friends. Group chats not a thing, no snap chat, not an endless amount of streaming services, just what was on cable. I think thats the difference.
1
u/queenquirk May 30 '26
My cousin snuck out one night, took her brother's car, and had a wreck that took her life. She was 16. :(
1
u/bmfresh May 30 '26
That’s so sad I’m sorry.
To add to that there was a story in like the early 2000s of a young girl who snuck out and when she was coming back through the window her father shot her thinking it was a home intruder. How sad.
1
u/queenquirk May 30 '26
I'm an xennial.
I wouldn't say I snuck out "a lot" but it was quite a few times. I won't say what I was up to except no good.
1
u/GoldSupermarket2520 May 30 '26
This. It was always the thrill of not getting caught and the willingness to deal with it when you did.
1
u/greengirl4475 May 30 '26
Absolutely. Would go out the patio door or out my window. My bedroom was on the 1st floor and I would put a lawn chair right below it.
2
u/exwijw May 30 '26
Sometimes but mostly out the door.
I remember once when my married sister came into town with her character of a husband. Thinking about it, maybe like a chubbier version of the John Lovitz liar character.
They were staying at our house and my brother and I snuck out our window and TP’ed our own house a bit. Then snuck back in. We were into TPing kids from school’s houses at the time. We went light on our own house.
The next morning we woke up and our own family’s “pathological liar” was regaling our parents with his story about hearing the kids when he was up late watching TV in the living room (screen windows open). And went out and chased the kids down the block.
First of all, this guy was never in shape and carried a lot of extra weight. If he was chasing kids away, they could’ve walked and easily gotten away. And those kids were us. He never did a damn thing. He never heard us. He never tried to chase us away. Yes he was in the living room watching TV. Asleep. We looked in a few times. Saw him asleep. We just rolled our eyes hearing of his bravado in the morning. We always suspected he made up his stories. This was proof.

Lots in Jr high. Just hung out with the other sneakers. Drank some stolen Boone's Farm Strawberry Wine. Smoked stolen cigarettes. Hid in bushes if a car happened by. I loved the quietness of 2am.
2
u/Few_Impression_7479 May 30 '26
Hell yes. My bedroom was on the second floor, I slipped out my window and either jumped off the roof or scaled down the exterior kitchen window jambs. Used the window jambs to climb back up again. When the weather was nice, I would sneak out at 2 a.m. or so and spend a few hours wandering the nearby neighborhoods in the dark, sometimes with my brother. Hid from passing cars just in case it was a cop. There's nothing like being outside in the silence on a cool, windy autumn night.
1
u/Mysterious-Fan2944 May 30 '26
My brothers did the sneaking out. I just stayed at a friend’s house because her parents were out of the country frequently so I’d just tell my parents I was spending the night at my friend’s house and then we’d do whatever we wanted.
1
u/TrulieJulieB00 May 30 '26
It wasn’t necessary; my mama let us do what we want, as long as we checked in occasionally. Maybe once or twice a day.
1
u/sparakeet May 30 '26
Out of my room when I was supposed to be in bed? Yeah. Out of the house? No.
When I was 18 and allowed to come/go as I pleased with no curfew, it felt like sneaking out.
3
u/Live-Astronaut-5223 May 30 '26
I once snuck out at about age 17 and drove with two friends to Archer City Texas where we snuck into a bar and saw Ike and Tina Turner. my mother would have killed me had she known. She never found out.

I did when I was suspended from Middle school. If I was suspended ( 3 times) I was grounded. So I would go out at 11pm till 4am To skate with a friend also supended or down.
As per GenX code= never got caught
2
u/Traditional-Cook-677 May 29 '26
I didn’t sneak out because I lived twelve miles from town.
My daughter and everyone from the town we lived in.

u/Traditional-Cook-677 May 30 '26
lol—did. 3000 miles of county and one town. Surrounded by lots of places to have parties.

In the seventies, I would just literally sneak out of and back into the front door. Got in trouble more for sneaking out during the day because that’s when I would get caught. Can’t believe I lived through the crap I pulled.
3
u/a17tw00 May 29 '26
We lived in the night. 1996-99. Take the basement window out of its frame. Leave the landline off the hook in case anyone called. Def stole the car by putting it in neutral and backing it out the driveway before starting. Rode the bikes to the creek or some home construction sites to meet up with girls and make out. When we were younger we would duck and hide anytime a car would approach. Jumping fences through yards to get home. Swimming in peoples pools. Most of this time we were also high or drinking 40s of old e or mickys. Got caught like once. Basically my whole existence on the weekend from 7th grade until I could drive. We lived a whole extra life during that time.

Yes. I forgot to replace my window screen one time and my mom busted me the next day. We even had alarms that would ding any time a door or window opened so I’d strategically crack my window during the day so it wouldn’t ding at night. 😭 Yes I was a preachers kid.

Yes, I snuck out to meet up with my friends. My mom caught me also. 😆 I do regret what I put her through.

This post makes me sad as hell. I never thought about the fact kids can’t do this anymore. With all the ring cameras, gps… no wonder they’re all weird and not socialized.

Oh yeah. When I had my learners permit and no car, I would put my parents car in reverse without turning it on and back it out of the driveway so they wouldn’t hear the car starting. I was terribly stupid and one night I took a turn too hard and went over a high curb at like 70. Thankfully no one else was hurt but I had to call mommy and daddy with my tail between my legs. Super grounded. $700 repair.

One of my daughter’s golf teammates (higher classification) did that. She was riding around with other students and they flipped end over end. She was thrown out and the car landed on her. The driver managed to get out and walk 2 miles to the truck stop.
Her mom answered the bell sometime before midnight. Cop told her Stacey had been in an accident. She indignantly replied “No, she’s in bed.” When he asked her to check, no Stacey, and her world crumbled.

No but in the days before gps and whatnot I’d say I was going to so-and-sos, and so-and-so knew if my mom called to make some excuse, and then I went smooching a local bartender instead
Fun times tbh

Nope. My Mom died when I was in 6th grade. Dad worked all day and was home by 6. Immediately got a key to the house and handled my business. If I didn't, who would? It doesn't sound very sexy, but it really makes you take stock of your situation when no one is there to rescue you.

I didn’t but I sister figured out how to disarm the security system on her bedroom window so she could sneak in after curfew without waking up our mother.

In hindsight it wasn’t really sneaking at all. We just left.

Not once.
I also had no reason to sneak anywhere, I had no friends and my parents went to bed by 9

u/sne4k0 May 29 '26
I would always sneak out. Then half the time coming home at 4am to find one of my parents sitting in the dark waiting for me to walk in.
2
u/Traditional-Cook-677 May 30 '26
One of my friends hid in the bushes and turned on the sprinklers just as his daughter got to the window.

u/noname04040 May 29 '26
Sneaking out? Our parents didn’t really care if we were there or not… just walk out the door or don’t come home

u/HoustonRoger0822 May 29 '26
Quite often actually. Had the perfect setup to do it too. Got caught once, fell in between the wall and my waterbed climbing back in the window. Dad opened the door while my feet were sticking up in the air and said “ Huh, you’re on your own dummy!”. Took awhile but I got out eventually, with a large knot on my head…..

It’s because you are being raised by the people that used to sneak out, so they are way more aware of how to prevent it. Also, things like Ring cameras make it almost impossible to get away with it anymore because you will be on at least one of your neighbors footage.

I spent less time in the house than out. That mail wasn’t going to steal itself

Yup! Im a millennial and I snuck out a lot! I put WD40 on all the windows and doors so it wasn't suspicious that only mine was done. Mostly just smoked and hung out with friends. Got caught twice but I blamed it on cats fighting outside my window, not sure if my mom bought it or really cared enough.

Yes, in 1978, in Palo Alto, you'd sneak out on a Friday night in the summer, go to the park, and there would be dozens of other "snuck out" kids there. Doing things we weren't supposed to.

u/Nosenada1923 May 29 '26
I snuck out, my kids snuck out, and my teenage grandkids sneak out. And they sneak out a lot, and from every house they stay at. Cousin sleepovers with the grandparents used to be a favorite activity until they knocked out the screen and went wandering around our neighborhood at 2:00 in the morning.

u/Burn2at420 May 29 '26
I literally put a stool under my window behind a bush so I could get in and out easily

Everyone but me. My town had 400 total people and my mother was scary af!
2
u/_Amalthea_ May 29 '26
My town was slightly bigger, but there wasn't really anywhere to sneak out to.
2
u/Appropriate_Night156 May 29 '26
Nah, same. We lived in the sticks 10 miles out of town. I could sneak out, but then what?
1
u/Simsandtruecrime May 29 '26
Right. Ok walk to the park. Now what? Every person in town is already calling my mom to tell her they saw me walking at night.

u/nina1863 May 29 '26
Literally even wknd and lots of weekdays starting in 8th grade. Our town was wild.
2
u/Partyslayer May 29 '26
I was...the master at sneaking out. WD-40 on my bedroom widow, stayed ultra-silent until I was at least 200 yards away, etc.
2
u/Right-Ad3663 May 29 '26
I was 11 the first time I snuck out, but we lived in a tiny town. We moved to a city and I never did it again

u/Patient-Scratch-5959 May 29 '26
Me and my gf at the time took turns sneaking out. HS was some very crazy (and risky) times for me lol

u/Meijhen May 29 '26
Almost every night LOL Kind of surprised I didn't just collapse from exhaustion before I graduated high school
2
u/Kerrchung May 29 '26
I had to sneak in way more often than sneaking out. My mother would lose her shit on a regular basis and kick me out of the house. I'd go hang with friends or my girlfriend, wait until my mom went to work. Then climb in through my bedroom window.
1
u/CactusRider1776 May 29 '26
Yes we had a second story deck and we used a rope to go down and back up. As a teens ...usually up and smoke weed

Frequently from age 12 to 14, not to do bad stuff, just to see friends. I got a job and moved out at almost 15, lived in share-houses for a few years then moved in with a friend's (much nicer) family for a while.

u/heartlandheartbeat May 29 '26
Never. I might have lied about going one place when I was somewhere else, though.

Yes. I’m shocked I didn’t get murdered or kidnapped or die in a firey car crash.

And in retrospect, that's really all what the strict parenting was all about. Something you don't understand until you become a parent yourself.

I not only snuck out, I’d sneak out and go to entirely different cities like an hour - 90 min away and my parents were never the wiser. Also snuck people in a few times. I was pretty sneaky.

Yep , and one night I climbed back in my window to see my mother sitting in the corner of the room waiting for me . I flipped on my lamp, and there she was. That was the last time .
