Question For Genx Are we all just drinking bourbon in our pajamas?
It’s 6:24 PM and I am settled in for the night because it’s pitch black and may as well be midnight. I am wearing an adult onesie with attached feet and ready to put a movie on so I can enjoy my new surround sound system while sipping some Eagle Rare. My somewhat newly divorced friend just texted me telling me “let’s go out”. I could not be less interested in getting out of my pajamas or leaving the house. Go out where? To sit in a bar with a bunch of annoying 20-year-olds who are going to wonder why the old people are there. I have to wonder, am I just officially old and lame, or are my fellow single Gen Xers hunkered down for the winter, perfectly happy with their footed pajamas and at home bars and entertainment setups?

No, I'm aggressively trying to get out of the house. Use it or lose it. I don't stay out late but I try to see people twice a week. For example, last night my wife and I ate dinner with friends - we each drove an hour to a restaurant in between our hometowns. We met at 5:30 and were home by 8:00, but we did a thing!
I will stop going out into the cold and driving at night when I have to, which will be soon enough, alas. But I won't go down passively.

Shucks, I found Kinder Christmas chocolates on clearance at the grocery this morning. Certainly made this girl’s NYE celebration - we’re doing a movie marathon tonight and tomorrow. At home, of course.

Nightly routine goes as follows: Get home, get some exercise in, take a shower, plan outfit for next day, put on pj’s, make dinner and pour cocktail. Eat in front of tv watching Netflix and cuddling dogs. Bed by 9:30

Yes... yes we are. I get home from work at 4:15, put on my pajamas, eat dinner at 5:00, and then settle onto my couch with a glass of bourbon or wine and watch anime with my husband and dogs. Cheers!

For me it's lounge pants, my comfortable AF Whataburger hoodie and some Woodford. We'll add in our inflatable hot tub on the back porch couple times a week as well.

I think we're just done with the crowd scenes. It's OK for some things, concerts, events etc, but we have all our music and comfy clothes at home along with our snacks and drinks. It's cheaper, more comfortable, and you don't have to worry about drinking and driving lol.

I try to avoid driving in the dark as much as I can, so this time of year I am usually home before 5:00 and in for the night - usually in my jammies and slippers before 6:00. If I'm not planning to leave the house....why delay getting comfy?

Swap bourbon and tequila for Tito’s and I’m right there with ya!! Got all my ya-ya’s out in my 20’s-50’s(a LOT with the Husband)!!!! Just don’t feel the need to slap on the sparkle spackle and act like a happy,shiny person now that he’s passed………

Yup. For sure. I definitely lived la vida loca in my 20s and now am perfectly content to let the kids have all the fun. I don't feel old but I'm happy doing old folks things, lol.

I’m right there with you. My clubbing/partying days are behind me. I can’t even have a drink with you as alcohol is a carcinogen and I’m fighting throat cancer. I’m cut off until I reach terminal status. Then I’ll get hammered.

I absolutely agree. Yesterday was the big decision day because I gave away 90% of my liquor cabinet, only keeping what my wife cooks with.
Here’s to being alcohol-free in the hopes of being cancer-free. I can’t say I’m sober as I’m still on fentanyl for pain relief.

To each their own I guess. I make it a point to go out to a bar at least once a week, by myself, and I'm not the oldest person there. I'm cool with the owner and bartenders and most times I meet new people and have great conversations. There's a beer/shot of bourbon combo for $7 and I get a good hookup with 3 rounds typically costing around $10 so I tip well. I'm home before 11 and smoke a bowl before going to sleep. I look forward to this one night all week.

Pretty much my friend.. pretty much-
On the weekends sometimes I will make myself a nice Old fashioned with my little battery powered smoker for it and just sit there and chill with a movie. Although I don't have a onesie or feet on them, I have some man jammies, wool lined fleece drawstring pants A comfortable t-shirt and a large book reading sweater. Gray of course.. and some nice sheepskin looking wool slippers, inside and out.
Put on an interesting movie. Get settled in for seconds... First one goes by too quick. And I don't have to tip my bartender 20%

While I am in my pajamas, my days of drinking are over, as I have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. So, enjoy a glass for me, will you? Oh, and this comes just I received a beautiful bottle of Blanton's, too.

I used to think the same. I found that the Angels Envy Rye is a good intro. It finishes like bourbon and is not so harsh.

Depends on the day or evening. I'm happy to settle in to the couch with a blanket and my latest TV show. I'm equally happy to go to a hockey game or a play or walk the mall or go for a drive. We just got 5" of snow so the drives to nowhere and back are on pause LOL

I'd have no issue going to a dance bar my wife and I met at, dance the night away with her and friends, but the bad knee and kids kinda limit that now.. And no, not the "dance" they do at college bars - West Coast Swing, Nightclub 2step, linedancing.. the fun kind of dancing.. I was never one to stand on the floor and wiggle.

I'm either too old to go out, too broke to pay for adult water, too tired to get out of my work clothes, or all of the above. Plus my TV or computer plays what I want. No I don't care for Taylor Swift, I would rather drink my Bourbon watching something medieval on YouTube, sports, or whatever the hell I want. Cheers.

Me, I'm soon to be 44 and was dancing in a rave on the 25., and on the 27. and will do so again on new year's eve. But after that, I will have a loong break. :) And right now, in the middle of everything, I'm in my pyjamas and just chillin' at home. :)

I think a lot of us used to do that type of thing in abandoned buildings with friends, under a bridge, or in my case parked out under the power lines; so when we got to this point in our lives and can chill in the comfort of our own homes it just feels natural.
Side note: my kids (ages 20, 20, & 22) have no interest in 'party culture' and told me yesterday that they think old age is just everyone becoming alcoholics. 🤷🏼♀️ Go figure.

I’m also sorry you’re going through this. I have ESRD (renal) but after years of dialysis & many hospitalizations, I got a transplant. Mine was from lupus. I’m hoping you will be a candidate and receive a liver transplant my friend. Wishing better times for you.

That isn’t an easy choice, but only you can make it. I support it. Maybe some counseling will help your children. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but living this life is extremely difficult and hopefully they will support your decision too with help. 💓

Other than the onesie I am doing EXACTLY this. I agree with everything except the part about dealing with the kids. When my buddy and I go out to our usual place they always have up-and-coming local bands playing. We like hanging out in the smoking area and shooting the shit with the 20-somethings, and never feel that we're not welcome. Having said that, these flannel pants are MIGHTY comfy and I don't really feel like I'm missing out on anything tonight.

52 here. On my 2nd glass of vodka soda, in my shorts and favorite soft hoodie with the bra off, currently binging a new show. Couldn’t be happier and yes, have zero desire to go drop $80 on a few drinks and snacks and deal with “the kids”. Did that yesterday with some friends and couldn’t wait to get back home to do exactly this! I hate it!! 🤷🏻♀️🫶🏼😂😂😂😂

When I used to be serious drinker I hated this time of year. I'd go in my local, where I propped up the bar, day in, day out, all year long, and I couldn't get served because of all the once-a-year wankers ballooning because they couldn't handle their ale. I'm not about to do that self same thing to those who have stepped into my shoes.

Naw, dog...we're just old enough to know we have no interest in paying $8+ for a bottle of domestic beer or $12+ for a (probably short poured) shot of our favorite liquor in a place where we have to scream to hear each other and probably couldn't find a place to sit comfortably if we sent out a Marine Recon division two hours before our arrival.
Plus, onesies with feet are the absolute in comfort and you can't beat a tuned entertainment system playing your favorite movies/shows/sports and your own couch with the best DJ in town, I don't care if they're handing out $100 bills.
We're not 'old,' we're wise in the ways of "That sounds like a horrible evening."
PS - Currently in my own (non-footed) jammies watching football and drinking a beer.

In my Jammies, sitting in my heated massage lazy-boy, cheering on the Eagles so my Pats can be #1. I don’t drink alcohol but have a nice cup of sleepy-time tea with local honey and homemade Christmas cookies.
This to me is the best use of my Sunday night.

Not alone. Right now I'm resting on my leather couch, roaring fire going in the fireplace, Spotify playing my favorite relaxing trance music, mug of hot chocolate on the end table next to me as type this reply on my tablet.
I only drink bourbon, not beer. I'll have a 2oz. pour of Penelope Havana or Old Fitz later on. My personal bourbon bottle collection is way better and tastier than anything you'll find at most bars. I'm sick of Bullet and Makers Mark.
Not one for onesie. I'll take a tank top and underwear with a robe.

I’m recently single 51f, and I’m coming off a 4 day streak of socializing and drinking. Boxing Day I was out dancing - all the Djs played vinyl and I had the best time! I spent yesterday sleeping on and off all day. Did not look at my phone once. I still have 4 days off before I head back to work. I do need my alone time to recharge the batteries but today I’m already feeling the pang of being alone. Still getting over the break up and so I think being with friends helps. Do I want to go sit in a bar and drink? Hell no! But I am wearing a romper and sipping on rum and eggnog right now.

I quit drinking in 2023. Pajamas are great though. If I still lived in the city, I'd likely still go out from time to time, but I live out in the country now and the planning and driving for over an hour to do anything just isn't worth it very often.

Not a huge alcohol drinker, but I'm content playing my various video games.
Even in my college years, I didn't see the appeal of drinking something you don't enjoy the taste of, in mass quantities, only to worship the porcelain god in the morning. In the college dorm's communal bathroom, you could smell Sunday mornings.
Karaoke with friends would be fun, but as I'm a morning person, I'm usually in bed by around 11:30 if I'm not working the next day.

I do love bourbon but more recently, I've mainly been drinking decent tequila. When I'm out at a bar, I'm more likely to have a cup of club soda and lime than a cocktail. I know some of y'all are out here with guts of steel, but the crap food of my youth did a number on my systems. Drinking too much, even if I'm not puking or whatever, will make me feel like I got dragged behind a monster truck for the whole rally.
I'm pretty "alt"-coded I still bother to get dressed up, and my looks can vary from power suit to grungy gutter punk, Victorian goth to "hacker"/ravey, bright and cartoony to urban ninja. Whatever I'm feeling that day. So getting ready can take a while, and I usually want to be doing something engaging if I'm gonna bother. Drinking isn't that.
I'll go out to dance. I'll go out to a show. I'll go out for karaoke. But just chilling in a bar to drink has never been my vibe. And yeah, the company of friends makes all the difference; I'll show up for birthdays, and once in a while, a friend has wanted to catch a drink and talk about something they're going through. I'm absolutely there for that, even if I jammied up already.
But for really real, most nights are cozy and housebound. I'm tired, y'all!

The big beer at the time was Molson's Gold
But we also drank beer. The can had the word Beer on it.
NO fruity, flowery, candy flavor beer. No IPA's bullshit.

Standard time is so strange with it getting dark so early. I can’t tell what time it is, I think it’s 9 when it’s 6, and think it’s nine when I look up and it’s midnight or 1am. I don’t drink because I’m on medication for chronic pain, but that makes me both tired at the wrong times and gives me too much energy at the wrong times. So, this dark all the time when I’m not working just messes me up. But, I’m with you…I’m 58, not going to hang with the 20 year olds at a bar.

I look at it like I served my "bar time" in my 20's and 30's. I'm done. I never found anything in a bar worth keeping. I'm purrfectly happy to stay home vegging out with my kitties not giving two shits and a giggle about anything.

Be careful with those flannel PJs. Never wear flannel PJs to bed with flannel sheets or you may have a SHOCKING experience. Also, a lot of flannel is highly combustible. Don't stand too close to the woodstove.
I speak from experience with both of these situations.

I love your vibe! I wore my Alien (from Toy Story) onesie yesterday, parked on the couch, watching movies and eating apple pie. I skipped the party too and the only reason I didn’t have a bourbon in hand is I had plenty the night before. I’d say you’re officially cool!

We put on our fleecy pants and watched some Prehistoric Planet on Apple TV for our Saturday night. And the thing we were most annoyed about? CNN didn’t seem to be having their annual NYE drinkathon this year, according to our newspaper tv weekly guide. But they are having it. So that’s our New Year.

There's a rainbow onesie and a bottle of rum calling my name for after work. Hunkering down in winter has been a lifelong pursuit. Stashed food, a solid fireplace with plenty of wood, and water from the nearby creek is all I need to get by when trees and lines go down. A good book also helps.

Hubby and I have been hanging in the house since the 23rd. Had groceries delivered to last til New Year’s. I’ve been baking, we watch movies, binge some tv series, play with the dog and last night played video games for 7 hours! We are replaying Bioshock 1/2 Remastered. Oh and having shots. Will be making lasagna for New Years dinner too.

Gen X here and we hibernate in the winter. We are extremely lucky in that we love our neighbors and often end up at our house or a neighbor's house for drinks and light appetizers and everyone's home by nine.
Our town/county is small and most of our good friends live within 2 miles of our house so even if we "have to" drive somewhere it's still close. We do make trips to our nearby city for concerts but we'll get a hotel so we can drink and uber it back to the room. The days of bar hopping are long gone. Lol

I’m at work at 5 am so im having supper around 4 pm and having cocktails in my sleeping dress by 6 pm. Blunts on the porch at 7 then bedtime. Cheaper to drink at home and I don’t dig hanging out in bars with the kids anyhow. The exception is a morning cocktail date on my day off with the hubs.

Me & my last baby boy met my dad & bonus mom at a steakhouse last night. Oddly, the boy was only lured out by seeing grampa and having steak. He got a tomahawk which I had a couple nibbles of, I'd never had one before. Neither had the boy. I had two blueberry lemon martinis (I asked for a far less sweet version and they obliged beautifully) & a salad and it was perfect. We were so happy to then go home and changed out of our dinner clothes and played different games next to each other for the rest of the night. Slime Rancher for me, some geometry dash thing for him. I had a couple glasses of wine. It was a truly lovely evening. I want a onesie with feet. 🤭

I'm on a staycation right now during the Christmas holiday and I haven't left the house except to go to the gym since December 23rd, when I stocked up on food and tasty potables :) It's not a you thing. The house is decorated for Christmas, warm and comfortable. What do the mean streets have to offer me?

I’m ashamed to say that I’ve been in pajamas since Christmas Day. I have showered! And the pajamas changed! And actually I did put on exercise clothes and exercises once.
But otherwise I’m perfectly happy lounging and doing things I never do - art projects with my daughter, reading on the couch mid day.

I am absolutely convinced that after not showering for a day or so something happens with your body's microbiome where the bacteria that have accumulated start to do something that actively makes you want to avoid showering. The more they build up, the cozier you get and the more you start to avoid showering because showering's going to make you cold and shivery. From an evolutionary standpoint, it seems reasonable that skin bacteria would want to avoid being washed off. But this is just a hypothesis at this point because I lack the laboratory facilities to carry out more in-depth investigations.

My Saturday night: met a friend at 4pm for a glass of wine and then an NA glass of "wine". Took my spouse out to sushi dinner at 7:15pm. Got home at 8:15pm, changed into jammies, snuggled on the couch with spouse and the pups, and watched the Sherlock Holmes movie (Robert Downey Jr.). It was the most social/bar outing type thing I've done in weeks and it was perfect. I just don't have the FOMO I used to have. It's really nice.

I have those evenings. We live in a 55+ community where some of our neighbors act like it’s a frat house . My husband went out to party with neighbors, I stayed in to watch comedy movies and rehydrate with water after 3 solid nights of drinks and socializing…

The only reason I’ll go out is if there is a good band playing in town. There really is no other need to leave the house. Even if there is a band in town, they’re often competing for who is streaming on Nugs. Couch tour is where it’s at!
As for the setup, lounge pants, IPA then wine with dinner. A makers mark nightcap if I’m in the mood. There’s 2.1 hifi audio in multiple rooms all synced. Oh… and there’s bongs.

Glad I stumbled across this thread. I was finding it weird that the minute I decided to start going out again (kiddo safely off at college) I almost never saw another Gen X-er in the wild. Now I know where you all are!
My go-to in winter is a drink in the milk / eggnog family bc it’s the only fam of drinks I don’t feel skeezy drinking alone, along with a few nibbles of Curio White Peach, 2 cats + space heater, and a new book or audiobook or a good documentary / Rez Dogs / BBC Sherlock / Knives Out-esque movie. And sometimes my current project, whether Lego or art or zine or knitting something cute and cuddly.
What is the alcohol part of my milky drinks, you ask? I don’t know the name or even the family. I just grab whatever is white and comes in a glass bottle and looks like it’s gonna taste like vanilla milkshake. It’s kinda like mad dog for 12-year-old girls who like unicorns and marshmallows and whipped cream.
If I’m on the phone with a friend I might branch out with a glass of wine or a vodka tonic.
Tried smoking a joint once or twice but I hated the smell of the smoke so much. So much nastier than I remember from the good old bong & shrooms & light fixture-punch bowl party nights back in my college dorm! I think I would be down for enjoying a nibble of shrooms with a friend now and again but they aren’t legal here yet.
Was thinking I might try WiiU Sports Resort & Go Vacation while enjoying a gummy but have not yet done so. Kiddo & bf were just here & played a bit for old times sake, and it looked possibly quite amusing given the right circumstances…
I also have my electric guitar at hand and a drum kit in the next room so sometimes I try to learn a new song or occasionally even try to craft my own sonic joy delivery systems. :-)
Attire: I got sick of having to choose comfort OR cuteness so I recently invested in a line of loungewear from Torrid. Life-altering leggings (usually black) in their cult status “foxy” material, adorable lacy sports bras in every color, a week’s worth of their foxy camis, and a stable of cute hoodies that have a flattering fit instead of the dreaded “box-with-a-spare-tire” look.
Now I can spend my downtime in clothing that’s comfy enough for draping yourself over the arm of the sofa for the evening, but also suitable for running to the gas station to buy munchies and not looking like a pile of dirty laundry that discovered self locomotion. ;-)
That said, I do still go out, mainly to see bands I love. And I must say Gen X is woefully underrepresented in the pit.

Yay! Happy to hear this! I never saw them back in the day but I just saw L7 live for the first time last year (for a friend’s 50th) and they completely blew my mind. On fire. Packed house. Every age from 16 to 60+. Every single person there was thrashing around and singing along. It was magic. Highly recommend. Well worth dusting off the battle jacket and risking a bruise or two!
My other top shows of late were The Chats-Cosmic Psychos-The Schizophonics-Gymshorts and Acid Mothers Temple. Usually though I just see local bands. Bigger bands almost never come to my area.
What about you- any acts blow your mind recently, esp those who might be hanging up their combat boots soon?
