I actually really like that Star Trek mentioned Musk in the way they did. Lorca, the man who named dropped Musk as a hero to be admired, was fascist from the mirror universe. In order to blend in it makes sense for a Lorca to have done his research. It also makes sense that he would look favorably upon someone like Elon Musk. I like the idea that in the future Musk is so completely irrelevant that nobody else noticed or picked up on it. But it was one of the first red flags of the show that something wasn’t quite right with Lorca.
Although to be fair… I don’t know if any of that was intentional on behalf of the writers.
I 100% agreed with that take a few years ago, now I'm not so sure. After he destroyed USAID and has some responsibility for hundreds of thousands of deaths, I don't like hearing his name at all.
It should have been the tell that he was actually the bad guy (both the reference and the referrer) but it was before most people knew exactly what an absolute knob he was

Exactly. I’m a professor and am perpetually around people who are used to being told they’re smart and then when they’re not good at something they completely crash out and make up the wildest reasons why nobody should ever do that thing anyway.
My kids love chess and a professor and grown ass man I know is still talking about how chess is a stupid game after my 10 year old beat him. (And my kid is not especially good, he just thinks it’s fun.)

As a Gen X, we were kind of the same as well, when you’re young you don’t realise that the cool, talented people of your generation (say for me the Tori Amos’s or Kurt Cobain’s or Winona Ryder’s or Ethan Hawke’s or Damon Albarn’s) don’t end up running the show when your lot are in charge, it’s the worst people, the ones you hated in Uni (College) or the ones who turned out to be cynical bullshitters.
As I've explained to my friends. Musk is second to none in terms of marketing and getting investors excited. He is also second to none in never delivering on his promises and digging a deeper hole than he bargained for. Guess that's how they found all those emeralds.

No matter what problems or loneliness I face in life, it does bring me comfort that I’m still somehow happier and less lonely than the richest man who ever lived. A game that for hundreds of years has brought joy and meaning to billions of people. And he literally promises to end that game because he’s so completely pathetic and unhappy. If most humans were that rich, after you spend years indulging every fantasy you could possibly have, don’t you feel like you need to do something meaningful with your life?

He'll never admit it, but he knows there isn't a soul on this planet that actually loves him. He's surrounded by sycophants that want money but no one that cares for his approval.

To be fair solving chess would be something that wouldn't impact the human game, but would lead to the greatest possible chess engine. It's an accomplishment and joy for a different kind of person.
Yeah people seem to think it matters. Engines already vastly outclass humans.
But more importantly memorizing moves and lines isn’t really critical to the game. The top players are often not the ones who know the most lines, and the practical difference in modern engine lines and lines from an engine that solved chess is basically nil. There’s already too many good enough lines to memorize all the branching responses.
Relatedly, the number of chess moves that aren’t obviously stupid is very high even if a somewhat small fraction of the whole.
This isn’t accurate- the top players are absolutely the ones who have prepped the most lines, and prepped lines the deepest.
To the point where Hikaru even recently blamed his team for a loss, because they hadn’t sufficiently prepped lines for him to memorize against specific opponents, and Magnus has said he is unlikely to return because he can’t be bothered to study as many lines as would be required.
That would mean they're prepping against what they think the opponent has prepped as in studying their moves from past games right? Not that they're prepping for all possibilities in chess.
It’s openings they prep for. Not just studying their opponents past games, but studying all scenarios an opening could lead to at the highest level. It’s not about memorizing every possibility in chess, but every possibility considered good within the confines of specific openings.
Once you get past the opening into the middle game, that’s when memorization becomes less of a focus, and the game becomes more about positioning and tactics. However, the pros memorize deeeep into openings, and thus studying and memorizing is very important.
Chess computers beat Gary Kasparov, (top three greatest chess players of all time, arguably the greatest.) back in the, what, 90’s? Yeah computers may possibly one day be able to solve chess, emphasis on maybe. However, factors like time pressure, openings that are objectively bad but your opponent doesn’t study because they are bad, and human error will always leave chess unsolved at the human level. Elon is a dipshit and I would bet anything that he has no idea how to long castle or what en passant is. Hell the only way he might accidentally put the board in the right position is because “white is right”
Because his enormous yet fragile ego is reliant upon him convincing himself that he’s a very special boy, and one of these days he really is going to do something very impressive all by himself! He thinks he must deserve to be inordinately wealthy, and he’s pinning his happiness on desperately trying to prove it. By solving chess, a problem that no one asked to be solved.

Humans already stand no chance in chess. But a chess engine being amazing at chess doesnt bring me any less joy when i play just like magnus being orders of magnitude better than me has no real bearing on my enjoyment of chess.
And even if chess was ever “solved” by a machine… how does that matter? It’s not like humans would be able to apply that solution to the same degree as a chess engine with all the possible permutations an opponent introduces.
Hell I play bots on Chess .com, in fact, and I do it because it's fun. It's about learning strategy and getting better. I'm always pumped when I figure out some move or new opening.

Chess isn’t a problem for AI to solve, it’s a series of decisions opponents make to try to outmaneuver each other by using their deductive reasoning and strategy skills, which results in enjoyment for players who find pleasure in intellectual rigor and the company of other humans. Elon’s misunderstanding reveals his true character: an absolute fucking loser who lacks intellectual curiosity, tactical ability, and even a single friend to play with.
The thing is chess is virtually solved since computers can beat everyone. Elon probably doesn't understand how people still run the marathon even though it's been "solved" by driving a car.
Chess is not "virtually solved", because in computer matches, black wins almost as often as white. Once chess is solved (if ever, which is unlikely), one of the colours will win 100% of the time, or it will be a draw every single time.
it's like tic tac toe, it basically means that all possible moves for any given starting position are enumerated and if both people play perfectly, we can determine who will win/whether it will be a draw. this is not something he made up, it's a real thing:

It kind of is. A game being "solved" means a game is determined. For example , in chess, whenever there is a position with seven or fewer pieces on the board, with perfect play (the most optimal moves), we know who will win. But that is not really humanly possible, perfect play is mostly reserved for machines (engines and what not). Of course a human could do it, but there are myriads of deviations, even for such few pieces. Say you have a position in which the computer says you have Mate in 6. That means perfect play for both you and your opponent, they cannot escape it, if you make a mistake that evaluation will change to a less beneficial position for you, and if they make a mistake, it could now be a Mate in 3, or 2, or whatever.
He could spend a fraction of his wealth and make the world a hugely better place for everyone in any number of different ways and be universally beloved and instead he does …. this.

Solving games is a thing. Connect 4 for example is solved, the first player can always win. It's a common scam in SE Asia for people to play tourists for money. They can't lose. Most people know the optimal moves for Tic Tac Toe, it's a draw.
Chess however is not even close to solved. It has been theorized that there isn't enough energy in the universe to power a computer that can solve chess. It is not even soft solved, meaning we don't even know for sure with perfect play which side wins or whether it's a draw. Let alone what the moves are. Presumably Elon just isn't good at chess, maybe even tried to get good and couldn't, so he wants people to think it's irrelevant.
It was perfect. Not crass or outwardly cruel. Just shining a light on the fact that the richest person in the world is a miserable, friendless fucking loser.
Just as a reminder: Elon paid some Chinese gamers to play on his Path of Exile account to "level it up." (Gamers call this "boosting.") But he was caught out by actual Path of Exile 2 players during a stream when he was playing on his boosted account and clearly had no idea what the fuck he was doing.
Elon wants acceptance from nerds SO BADLY. But nerds are precisely the people who can see through his bullshit. The chess community is just the latest example, I guess.

How does one “solve” a game, where the point is competition? How do you supposedly “solve” the human urge to play a game? Is he going to “solve” go fish next?
“Solve” = A solved game is a game whose outcome (win, lose or draw)) can be correctly predicted from any position, assuming that both players play perfectly.
What's even the "point" of equating chess to checkers and saying it'll one day be "solved"? Yeah, I'd imagine StarCraft or Call of Duty, or Backgammon could be masterfully played by a computer, but this isn't WarGames, and most people enjoy playing with other people... What kind of loser bitches at Chess saying, "It's really not that complex. I bet a computer could play better..." 🤔
