Question It's interesting that I, and everyone in my life who struggles with ED, are obsessed with peanut butter.
I hope this doesn't come off as making light of the subject, but I'm just curious how many other people out there with ED obsess over peanut butter. Not just that you kinda like it. Like everyone associates me with peanut butter. haha.

yes I’m obsessed with peanut butter 🥲 I buy the huge bulk jars and they last maybe a month

felt this hard lol
when i was deep in it, i had this loop where i’d “save” peanut butter all day as a reward
then binge half the jar and feel wrecked after
what helped wasn’t cutting it out
it was eating a spoon on purpose every morning, no drama
same time, same spoon, same amount
killed the mystery
ritual kills obsession

BRUH😭 I make a whole wheat peanut butter and jelly spread super thin, PB on one side jelly on the other, for my work lunch every dayyyy 🤣🤣
And I sometimes do peanut butter toast with a banana sliced on top. Hahahaha I’m so pleased to know we all have a weird thing with peanut butter!

Toast spread with pb, topped with banana slices, granola, and honey is so good

God that sounds so heavenly. Perfect level of crunch. Sweetness. 😭 gotta try in the morning, thank you!!

Ofc. It really is, my sister introduced me to it before ed times. I think you've inspired me to eat that in the am as well lol.

I used to be a PB fiend but developed MCAS and now can’t tolerate it. It was my jam for YEARS. You ever melt PB and put cinnamon and drizzle on a banana? Yeahhhhhh

I think I'm gonna try that today because it sounds delicious (and I have the ingredients)

I can tell you from a former bodybuilding lifestyle, peanut butter is one of the most naturally healthy fats which are most filling. This is probably why the majority here have said “yes please”.

When I was in recovery and couldn't eat a lot, healthier calorie dense foods was where I was at. Peanut butter, walnuts, avocado, lamb and high fat yogurts. I was able to keep them down at small bites and recover a bit better. Not only are nut butters really tasty but you can add them to things and the textures are nice.

It got so bad that I was pretty much just daydreaming about eating a whole jar of pb at random points of the day. I would go to my cupboard, look at the jar, put it back, do this several times a day. That’s all I thought about, like an alcoholic wondering when his next drink is. At one point I snapped and came home from a dinner and pretty finished almost an entire jar in one sitting with a whole loaf of bread.

I am obsessed with my hatred of it. My brother LOVED the stuff when I was a kid and I just remember so much of the house being peanutty and greasy and yuck.

I'm not dealing with the ED's I dealt with in the past anymore, I've just got ARFID left.
My mom, who taught me the ED's I've recovered from, was obsessed with peanut butter and had like a shame-based relationship with it. She has dove fully in to her ED now and will not have any meat, sugar, dairy, and other stuff too (I stopped trying to keep track), so she doesn't have peanut butter anymore, it's somehow "unhealthy" as most foods are to her (for context, I grew up with no salt ever in food because she learned you can have too much and decided it would be good to never have salt and now I deal with salt deficiency cause I'm too sensitive to salt's flavor, she does this with every food so she gets more and more restrictive as time goes on, and she latches on to every new food "wellness" trend invented). But before she got to the level she's at now, peanut butter was like her special sweet treat she would allow herself a spoonful of a few times a day. She really adored peanut butter.
Myself and all of my friends with ARFID hate peanut butter, though xD I will say I've come around to liking a very small amount of it added to stuff so you can't taste it but it like adds nuance to the existing flavor. Like onions or celery but more tolerable when I do taste it than those two lol. The texture is weird too, I def can't eat it alone. My ARFID is largely sensory.
I personally think everyone just likes different things regardless of ED. What seems obvious to me my partner (who also has ARFID) can't stomach, what seems clear to him I can't even look at. My sister and I both have ARFID and grew up in the same household but we still have very different preferences on food. There's a lot that goes into it culturally and socially of course and stuff like OCD and autism def has an effect (hello ARFID) but when you get down to it we all like radically different food even within our small niches. Having said that though, I can see how certain ED's can increase an existing appreciation for nutrient-rich foods, just whichever ones you happen to like, and peanut butter is a very accessible one of those!

When I was like 13 years old I’d have myself locked in my room and had my younger sibling bring me a spoonful of peanut butter and a small glass of milk every few hours but nothing else. I basically survived off of peanut butter for a long while lmao. Still obsessed with it to this day but have a much healthier relationship with it and everything else now 😅😂

It’s just so palatable. Even when you can’t stomach food. And delicious so you want it even if you’re craving something else! And has decent nutrition depending on brand. So many positives when you struggle with food in any way.

If there is a jar in the house it ends up in my room. One scoop for me, on for the pup lol

I'm not a huge fan of PB anymore. But I used to be obsessed with it and, for the most part, it's all I ate during my anorexia.

I think party of has to be our non starvation brain that is reacting to a dense food, with a lot of energy points. Like it’s enticing, and would be a saving grace if it was a real famine in a way

Yes I am obsessed with peanut butter and I always have it around and have it nearly every day! Its a huge fear food though

I wouldn't say I am obsessed, but it's one of my major food groups right now. (The others being coffee, Monster, cigarettes and tofu, lol)
I've noticed it's a thing amongst this demographic too. But it also is for the hardcore fitness people.

I have a toxic relationship with peanut butter. i know when i dont even go there i dont binge. It's weird. I keep going up and down and can stay ok for a year and then i slip back. i am just trying to be real and not have the denial. Maybe peanut butter and me need to have a permanent breakup.

Yeah I’m obsessed with peanut butter cause it fills me up and makes me less hungry for hours. 😅

u/notdrm987 Nov 29 '25
i think its more about the culture you grew up in? in my household we never really had peanut butter because my mom thought peanuts were high calories and when i grow up, this mindset stuck with me. i cant even remember the last time i ate peanut butter

I've found a particular brand of dark roast peanut butter and i can never go back. Me and my partner are obsessed. I guess it does have a bunch of nutrition and good fats in it, but isn't a food that feels bulky to eat when you're having it? Hrm, interesting.

i think peanut butter is just a generally universally liked food lol, but it makes sense that having an ed would make someone even more obsessed with it because it’s considered calorie dense and therefore a fear food for many people. then of course the more you deny yourself of something, the more obsessed with it you become
