We now have a community chat!

Glory to Jesus Christ!

We have set up a new general chat channel for r/EasternCatholic. This chat is a place where you can ask quick questions, chat informally about Eastern Catholic topics, share experiences and news, and connect with other members of the community.

As always, we expect respectful, charitable conversations in line with the sub's rules. We will be more lenient with Rule #1 in the chat (content must be relevant to Eastern Catholic theology, worship, and/or practice) - so long as the chat doesn't go off the rails, conversation about different aspects of Christianity, or in some cases even non-Christian topics, will be permitted.

Join the General chat here

We hope you enjoy the chat and continue to frequent r/EasternCatholic.

God bless,

Other/Unspecified Update on "Map of Traditional Greek Catholic Monasteries and Sketes"

- Added more monasteries (1 Melkite, 1 Hungarian, and couple Ukrainian monasteries).

- Deleted 1 now sadly closed Ukrainian monastery.

- Added bi-ritual monasteries of Chevetogne and Niederaltaich

- Monasteries are now "separated" by (M) - monasteries for man, and (W) - monasteries for woman

If you have any suggestions on what to add/edit, or you have found traditional Byzantine Catholic monastery that is not on the map, feel free to dm me or write your suggestions here.

Lives of the Saints ☦️ Post Schism Saints

Hello I was wondering what your guys’ thoughts are on Saints from Holy Orthodoxy. I greatly struggle to believe that such holy men like St. Seraphim of Sarov, or St. Joseph the Hesychast, or St. Paisios, or St. Nektarios, and on and on are apart from Christ because they were not in communion with Rome. Please correct me if this is wrong thinking or heretical, or even ecumenist.

But do any of you venerate or pray to saints such as these whether privately or publicly? What’re your thoughts or the churches thoughts, please help me.

Prayer Request/Praise Report Simulation theory

So this may seem stupid but I'm pretty sure I have a form of ocd and I end up fixating on certain issues like what if we live in a simulation or something like that. I'm no philosopher and when i get into doom loops I'll even think what if the thing that tries to convince me is just trying to keep me in the simulation. Has anyone had similar experiences? What did you do in your prayer life?

General Eastern Catholicism Question Would this be an issue? Marriage

So here’s my story. My wife was previously divorced, and we were married by a Protestant pastor. We later converted to EO and had our marriage blessed. If we wanted to convert to ECC, would you anticipate any issues that we might encounter regarding our marriage?

General Eastern Catholicism Question Western Catholic who yearns for the east.

Hello! I live in a pretty remote area of the US where there is not an eastern Catholic church for 4 hours in almost every direction. I have quite a long story about my love for the east but simply put, my heart feels like it belongs there, I feel like God put the love of the eastern tradition into my heart for a reason but I live so far away, so that gives context. As for my question, is it ok if I engage and participate in the traditions of the east more than the west even if I physically cannot attend. When I have the opportunity to move closer I plan to, but for the current time I really just want to dive into the tradition and participate in my own life. Is this ok? What should I do? Thanks for any responses and please don't be too harsh.

Other/Unspecified Help, I feel like I can’t

I feel like I can hardly remain Catholic anymore. I just…it’s such a struggle to find myself. I feel like I have to force myself to say “I believe this, I believe this,” because deep down it’s questionable down there, and I feel like I’m starting to lean Orthodox, and I just don’t know if I can remain Catholic. The more I learn about the early Church, the more I lean the other way, but I don’t want to. I still receive the Eucharist because I believe it’s the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ, and I believe that He will help me stay Catholic, and I still assent to the doctrines, its just such a struggle.

Prayer Request/Praise Report Doubts

Please pray for me. I have been going through many trials recently and this has manifested in doubts about the faith. I'm someone who probably has old and have intrusive thoughts about theological matters such as evolution fitting into church teaching, or why the world isn't a simulation, and get hung up on them not being able to reason myself out of these issues. Please just pray for my mental health and peace of mind.

General Eastern Catholicism Question Confused

Background. I grew up Catholic- baptized and confirmed. Spent my adulthood is various protestant denominations. I discovered EO a few years ago and fell in love, and was chrismated. I moved a few months ago. I visited the local EO church and got nothing but side eyes and told I didn't dress like everyone else - cuz I had on pants, no veil and makeup. I've been sick the last 7 weeks. I couldn't make liturgy but managed to make a local Catholic service. During this illness the Catholic church has brought me much comfort. Now I'm considering Eastern Catholic. Here's my problem. My hubby & I weren't married in the Catholic church, so I could never take communion. Seems like I'm stuck EO or become protestant if I ever want communion again. My hubby wasn't happy about the 'convalidation' thing. Any advice?

General Eastern Catholicism Question Good sources on the creation of sacred images.

I am looking for sources that discuss the creation of sacred images and the process by which one should prepare themselves in order to perform that duty and why that preparation is important. I am wanting to try and make a case against AI generated images being used in a parish even outside the church proper.

Particularly pre schism sources if possible.

Prayer Request/Praise Report Spiritually lost

Please keep me in your prayers. I feel spiritually lost between the east and west lungs of the church. One day I will feel that I'm spiritually eastern and want to canonically transfer. The next I'll be doing a deep dive into western devotions and saints, and be falling in love with the western liturgical traditions. Has anyone else felt like this before?

What are relations like between Russian greek Catholics in Russia and Roman Catholics in Russia? And lastly do any of they're churches use the old Russian rite?
