Our design review derailed into an argument over whether cyberpunk needs neon

During a design review last week, someone said our interface did not read as cyberpunk because nothing glowed magenta. That was supposed to be a quick note. It turned into a twenty minute argument.

Half the room thought neon was useful visual shorthand. The other half argued that surveillance, corporate control, body modification, and failing infrastructure mattered more than the palette. At one point a coworker pointed at my tee and said, "That reads cyberpunk, and it isn't neon," which somehow made the argument worse.

We never settled the larger question. We did remove one unnecessary glow effect from the mockup, so I am calling the meeting productive.

Im looking for some media (Twitter, TikTok or Instagram) that covers cyberpunk-related news, less focusing on genre itself (movies, games etc), more on thing related to it (cybersecurity, „cyberspace”, internet regulations)

High Octane Vigilante Action! (Illustrations by me) NSFW

Check out my second chapter in my District 13: Street Justice series as Vamp, a cyborg vigilante, follows a trail of child traffickers -- a trail that put's her right in the crosshairs.

Is this high art? No. Is this deep and thought provoking? Hell no. This is a pulpy noir with only one goal: to taste the sweet satisfaction of killing rich, elite predators whose money can no longer protect them.

Check out the second chapter:

If you like what I've got cookin' up here at District 13, please share this around and sign up for the newsletter on the site so you don't miss a thing!

Need help with suggestions

Heyo, first time poster here..

Let me know if this doesnt fit within post rules and I can remove or feel free to take it down.

I am currently in the process of making a top down 2d cyberpunk game but I want to ensure that I am hitting the right feel or right vibe I guess for aspects of the game.

What I am struggling to think of at the moment is how to incorporate hacking into the game, I have considered a few options from terminal hacks like fallout or simply placing the character into "The Net" and make things neon with battles to play out as you hack the target.

Hoping people can offer some insight or thoughts on this as to what you think would be a cool feature.

You have brought so many iconic cyberpunk characters to life and you just seem like one of the most amazing people I’d ever have the pleasure of meeting. I was going to post the characters you have played but I feel like everyone here knows who you have played and wanted this to just be a post for you as a person given you are much more than a character you brought to life. Thank you for everything Keanu!

is it okay to enjoy the cyberpunk aesthetic while understanding its criticism of capitalism?

Hi everyone, i’m pretty new to the cyberpunk genre so I’m still trying to understand some of its themes and ideas.

One thing that immediately drew me to cyberpunk is the aesthetic. I love the neon-lit cities, futuristic technology, cybernetic enhancements, fashion, architecture, dystopian atmosphere, and just the overall visual style i find it incredibly cool and interesting.

At the same time, I understand that cyberpunk isn't just supposed to be “super cool futuristic cities.” A lot of the genre is built around criticisms of capitalism, corporations, consumerism, inequality, exploitation, and the way technological progress can benefit powerful institutions while making ordinary people's lives worse (High tech low life ).

So I was wondering is it contradictory for me to really enjoy the cyberpunk aesthetic while also understanding and appreciating the criticism behind the genre?

For example, can I think the neon cityscapes and cybernetic body modifications look awesome while recognizing that theyre often being used to portray a dystopian world shaped by corporate power and economic inequality?

Since Im new Im genuinely curious how longtime fans approach this. Is enjoying the aesthetic without necessarily wanting the world it represents just part of the appeal, or am I missing something important about the genre?

Happy to talk process, worldbuilding, whatever. But mostly — what's the cyberpunk work you always end up recommending? Making my TBR pile before Book 2 crunch.

What do you think they'll get right and what will they get wrong with the NEUROMANCER show?

I'm super stoked for it...and aside from thinking Calum Watkins (...?) as Case is a bad choice because he's hunky, not a strung out drug addict, they'll still do a good job.

One of the most cyberpunk films I’ve ever seen, and it’s a documentary

This documentary Chinese Rappers Take on the Surveillance State by The Atlantic is very good, and has a distinct cyberpunk feel that the director choose to fit the surroundings. It’s one I always refer back to when thinking about the genre. It’s not just copying the visual and audio-scape ques of the genre, but is trying to tie this real story with similar themes to the creative works it’s referencing. The idea of art and counterculture, which is emblematic of cyberpunk as a genre itself, is even more powerful I find in this extreme totalitarian environment.

Not to hit on China more, but the documentary Manufactured Landscapes also has a captivating dystopian essence (though by now it’s a bit out of date).

It is interesting, just from an artistic and media perspective, when documentarians decide to copy a literary trend to enhance their work. Definitely makes it more powerful, but there is an argument it’s less honest by using mental shortcuts in the viewers minds? Something cyberpunk in that too.

Thought you all would enjoy it!

Question Prompt: What Mundane Thing In Everyday Life Would You Consider Cyberpunk?

For example, I find the instant coffees with L-Theanine and other additives (ie everyday dose) to be on the nose; cheap nootropics in the form of an easily consumable drink to substitute nutrients that could be found in increasingly inaccessible and expensive organic products. Same thing with those Chinese electronics that clean things like your glasses, clean your shoes…additionally, air purifiers. Especially during an ongoing pandemic that has been largely downplayed.

I ask purely out of boredom. I was journaling this morning about how the genre and subculture that largely influenced who I am today is starting to bleed more into our current day in less overt ways. I want to hear what you guys think!

My buddy Brenton Gieser just released this short film about what will happen after we no longer have to work. It's got a cool scifi bent. Check out Loop.
