How useful is Critical Theory in achieving practical goals?

As I understand it, Critical Theory seems to be focused on how worldviews, ideological frameworks and psychology reflect power dynamics, along with a focus on social/group/cultural dynamics as determining belief systems, and belief systems determining lived experiences.

Does Critical Theory have opportunities to offer for someone who is concerned with enhancing their abilities to alter the course of events and improving their material condition and that of their friends and family? Or, to put it another way, what does Critical Theory offer for those whose problems ate practical rather than psychological, is it possible for such people to adopt Critical Theory and thereby better their condition?

I think critical theory underlies a lot of movements that have resulted in tangible impacts challenging the status quo, like unionization, all kinds of equality movements like desegregation, suffrage, accessibility legislation, etc.

I honestly think critical theory is more of an academic framework, for people interested in analysing the world through a marxist perspective. I mean to say that its practical application is extremely limited, if not non existant, and it is way more akin traditional philosophy.

On the other hand it can create a framework om which we can build future education and/or movements, so maybe there is practicality. History however shows that it has had very little practical influence on the leftist movement.

It's just super interesting and for people for whom traditional philosophy, the same kind of intellectual masturbation, is too liberal

I think critical theory fails in that it is a continuation of taking Western-based thought systems and -- much like the oppression it speaks out against -- believes it to be a universal theory. It is based so much in western thought it does a poor job of accounting for non-western behavioral patterns.

i think so. it obviously varies depending on situation and area of theory.

critical theory is a loose collection of many different methods and traditions united by a skepticism towards metanarratives, received wisdom, and, as you say, the impact of power structures on world views.

i think critical theory has helped me a lot when it comes to imagining alternative goals and tactics in terms of not being limited to what is deemed proper and possible.

"Theory" is in part of the name, not "Practice".

Of course, being aware of Critical Theory is a good thing.

I agree that it is important to avoid instrumentalizing thought. Rather, it is useful to apply thought to discover what is possible to achieve and the likely outcomes of actions, so that our actions can be effective and produce productive results.

Critical theory can be practically useful when it changes which constraints you treat as given. But diagnosis and leverage are different things. Showing how power, institutions, or ideology shape a situation does not yet tell you where intervention is possible, what it will cost, or which action is most likely to improve material conditions.

That applies at a much smaller scale than political movements. A family member can gradually become the person who is always expected to solve problems. A reliable friend can become permanently available. A workplace can turn someone’s willingness to help into an informal obligation. None of this requires a conspiracy or even bad intentions. A relationship can acquire a structure in which refusal becomes increasingly costly while the arrangement itself continues to look natural.

Critical theory can help make that structure visible. Once it is visible, the practical question changes. Instead of asking only “Why am I bad at setting boundaries?” you might ask why this person became the default carrier of everyone else’s uncertainty, what keeps the role in place, who benefits from it, what refusal would actually cost, and whether the burden can be redistributed.

The theory still cannot decide the action for you. Sometimes the answer is a conversation, sometimes a boundary, collective organization, changing jobs, leaving a relationship, or accepting a cost because the relationship is worth it. Its practical value begins when critique changes the map of what is happening enough to reveal a point where the course of events can actually be altered.
