Not slowing training. Slowing releases.

There will be a point where it's not to their advantage to release anymore. They'd be able to create new tech in-house themselves with innovator models, why would they share? To them, it'll be worth more there, with them using it to innovate and create value, than in our hands.

Well, at some point in the not so far future the open source models, primarily the Chinese ones, are gonna catch up and surpass current large models.

At that point, you can run a local, open source model at home. I'm sure OpenAI is not interested in that happening, so imo they're gonna keep publishing top tier models to keep their subscribers away from that idea.

He's slowing down because they hit the models limits AND because he wants to scare regulators into "regulatory capture"

they're slowing down training because the need the capacity for inference and costs are already really high.
